Well, your Lord of the Rings has a 10-day free trial... ;) That site lists a ton of free ones as well. You can search by genre from their Home page and see reviews and gameplay videos and other good stuff.

WoW is the easiest choice. Many would argue that it's currently the best MMO and it has a free trial.

Pretty much all pay to play MMOs are RPGs. This is a list of games that are not MMOs but they're online, free, and fun third person action games. Gunz - is a TPS game with melee combat, there is even a game mode with melee combat only. Most people use Katanas. Dungeon Fighter Online - It's a 2D side scrolling beat'em up and best described as a mix between Diablo 2 and Golden Axe Dragonica Like the above only 3D and said to be faster paced. Coming next year is a online hack and slasher: http://vindictus.nexon.net/

Don't listen to these people, LOTR online and WoW are not action games. This is how combat works in this games. Each weapon has a 'speed' stat. This stat tells you exactly how long it takes for your character to swing your weapon. This is the basic melee battle of MMORPGs Swing, wait a for seconds depending on weapon speed, swing, wait some more, swing, wait some more, swing. And it's all automatic you don't click for each swing. Range combat works the same way. Also in range you can't move or it cancels your attack. All attacks are also locked on, no dodging unless a dice roll allows it.

I used to play Guild Wars which was fun, although I was and probably still am quite bad at it. It has a trial. I haven't tried WoW because I don't think I will ever get into a game enough to pay a monthly fee. Neither GW or WoW are action games in the same FPS type of sense. I would suggest giving Guild Wars a shot.

OH in that case the best free MMORPGs are Runes of Magic and Allods Online and both are just watered down WoW clones. Just pay the monthly fee, it's worth in. In free MMOs you can pay $50 a month to get huge advantages over people playing for free. But for $50 a month you could pay for 3 different pay to play MMOs.

I don't either. :P I always thought WoW was butt ugly too. I'm going copy and paste a list someone else has made from another thread: You can't let people decide for you, you need to try some free trials and see what you like for yourself. Here is a list of MMOs consider I've heard were good by some margin. Everquest 2: Your millage may vary but a lot of people love the WoWlization of the game. It now has soloing and people claim it has better end game raiding than World of Warcraft, there are just less people to raid with. Has PVP but no one does it. Vanguard Saga of Heroes: An open ended MMO with a very deep item creation system. Also has an unique diplomatic card battle mini game if you're into the certain thing. I haven't heard much about it, it's a lot less popular than even Everquest. Age of Conan: Blood and gore! On a serious note it has an unique melee combat system and mounted combat. If you're in a guild you can build castles and conquer other guild castles. Fallen Earth: Don't know much about it, but it has FPS gameplay, and it's set after a nuclear fallout, it's a Fallout 3 MMOFPSRPG! Aion: This got a lot of backlash because of the mega hype. The biggest turn off is that it is grindy, most people who wanted this game to replace WoW quit around level 35. If you can handle the grind I heard that the PVP is fast and intense. Also has one of the best character creation if that matters to you. Warhammer Online: I have an older sister who is actually playing this as she waits for Cata. Many long old time MMO players says it has one of the best PVP combat to date. Lord of the Rings Online: A lot of people describe it as 'WoW with a smaller but nicer community' sounds great to me.

World of Warcraft. It's not free, but it's the best.

If you want quality just get WoW. Other MMO's don't come close. A second would be LOTRO for PVE(not raiding, enjoying the virtual world instead) and EVE for hardcore PVP.

Eve online has a two week trial. It's definitely the most complex, and in my opinion the best MMO out there. Prepare for the steepest learning curve ever, though.

MaxGamer

This, get the trial, but the full game is way better than the trial, still it should be a good introduction.

And don't limit yourself like that for absolutely no reason o_0 try the trial it's free, you might actually like how it "feels" then you might begin to like how it looks too.

EVE Online, as the guy above said you get 2 weeks free trial. It's a space MMO. Check out the graphics. However, there is a massive learning curve, but that's the appeal! You have so many options, this is what keeps you going for years, always finding out something new!

PVP is player versus player. Although EVE has good PVP, the whole game is a giant gankfest with people who have been playing for years killing you immediately after you enter null sec space just because they can. All you need to get good at EVE is a huge time investment, if you can't put that much time in prepare to never have any fun. IMO WoW's graphics are what make the game shine. All the other MMO's will look and feel dated after a while, but the artistic direction WoW took makes it look good after all these years. The only other game to have had graphical longevity is LOTRO, which has constantly made optional graphic updates such as dx10 and dx11 features to its game.
