For the latest games, at high settings/resolution, you will basicaly need to upgrade the lot. However, for gaming the best upgrade to do is usually the graphics card. Don't go overboard, though - putting a top of the line card in is a waste, since your other components will be a bottleneck. I'd also suggest upgrading to at least 2GB RAM.

Also, depending on your motherboard you might be able to put a core 2 duo/quad in there, instead. They are the same socket as the Pentium Ds, but I don't know if your mobo will support them without knowing make/model etc

2GB RAM and a 8800GT or a ATI 4850 (latter is better) GPU and you SHOULD have a fighting chance. If possible, then overclock your CPU to 3.2ghz.

So with the graphics card, would the latest in the geforce 7 series be alright? Like the geforce 7950 for example.

Well, if you can find one, perhaps. I'm not sure, the 7 series is pretty old tech now. I'd suggest an 8800 as was suggested above, and a RAM upgrade. At 800x600, that should do you fine. EDIT: The 8800GTX is the top 8800, btw, whereas I believe the top 7950 was the GT.

Starcraft. This game is old but if you can play with friends its soooo fun. Also Age Of empires 2. As for fps Counter strike 1.6 and halflife 1. I dont think you could play most source games well though. So any goldsrc engine games you should be able to play. You have a huge library of old games to play. Many are free. Check out dosbox and abdonia! Your pc is pretty old like theses games but just cause they are old dousnt mean they are bad. Also far cry 1 may and I say "MAY" be able to play. Check the req though.

I'm fairly confident an 8800GTX will play most source games just fine, although you might find the CPU holds you back a bit. I use a laptop now, and have a console for gaming, but the old PC at home which my parents still use (I'm at Uni) has an AMD Athlon XP 1500+, and an ATI 9600XT (yeah, lol). I mean, that CPU came out in 2001, and that thing can play HL2 @ 800x600. Okay, it can get kinda choppy if you're not indoors, but it's definitely playable. What OP is looking at would definitely be good enough for at least HL2, if not some of the later source games.

I say first and foremost go buy another stick of ram for at least 2GBs. I remember 1GB... holy crap did that suck tryin to play BF2. Exiting BF2 was a disaster, took like 5 mins before my computer was useable again.

Second, you desperately need a new video card. You're using ultra old/low-end tech there. Your CPU is pretty old too but that's the least in need of a upgrade.

I say spend about $100. Get extra 1GB stick of RAM for around $20-25 then spend around $75 for a video card (get a GT 240 Galaxy) and you'll be WAAAAAAAAY better off than you are now. I'm not sure what budget you have, but most of the games in the past 4 years may be either unplayable or playable only on minimum settings with what you have now.

That 1GB of ram is a sure shot to hell.
