I am looking to get a new monitor something around 24", but I don't know which one to get. Their are so many different monitors out their and they are hard to choose from. So if you were getting a new monitor what would you want to buy and why? I am only looking to spend around $200.

I have a Samsung LS24B350H. I would recommend it. It's a 1080P LED monitor with HDMI. However, it doesn't have a DVI port. You can also quickly adjust the brightness of the screen depending on how you're sitting (lean back, for example) using Magic Angle.

you could get something like this It also has a rebate bringing it down to 150.

If you wanted 120Hz your going to need to save another 110+ bucks.

LG 23" 1080p IPS panel for $209

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005240

You want an IPS or PVA panel and not TN.

if all your doing is gaming then no, you dont "need" it, but if it was a true 120Hz monitor then it will be/seem alot smoother as its refreshing twice as much as a 60Hz.

That said it depends on your GPU as 120Hz is more demanding then 60Hz.

have a read of this

Personally color is more important to me than refresh rate, so I would look into an IPS panel like what bigfoot2045 linked. If you're used to the poor colors of most TN panels, an IPS will absolutely pop. I highly recommend watching a movie like Avatar once you get one (just for the visuals not so much story lol)

Ok thanks for the help. I don't really need a 120hz than, because I won't be watching movies, i'll just be gaming.

How about thisLG IPS231P 23IN.It's on sale for 160 and is an IPS with 5,000,000:1. Will I notice a difference between 5ms and 2ms response?

In terms of IPS panels, it's as cheap as it gets:

"the LG IPS236V-PN and IPS231P-BN [...] They've got awful motion performance. The 21" variant is miles better in every way and should be the default cheap IPS monitor to recommend."

These ips pannels are only 6 bit (just like tn pannels) but they do have slightly better color reproduction. They also have some backlight bleeding. Also, no hdmi. It all depends what's more important to you and what do you plan on using it for. As for the 2ms vs 5ms, the difference is there, but not everyone agrees on how big it is.

Keep in mind that 2ms and 5ms are just best case scenarios. Both can go up to 250ms. 2ms is generally recommended for fast paced games.

By the way, IPS panels have a better viewing angle, but are almost twice as heavy.

Older TN panels used to be pretty poor. The newer ones are much better. Put them side by side with a 6 bit IPS and the difference will not be that big. Someone took at picture of a cheap IPS next to a TN panel and they were both almost exactly the same. However, if you go for a 8, 10 or 12 bit IPS panel, then yes, the difference will be considerable in terms of color gramut. But some people just won't play FPS games on an IPS panel.

wat
120hz is totally helpful for gaming
well ok not needed
but it helps so much for gaming especially fast paced.

I'd def save up for 120hz, every quake live player I know has a 120hz monitor... there's a good reason for that.

It helps in every shooter, CSS, CS, even COD. Also things are just way smoother.

Really helps the most in quake live for close range lging, a lot less guess work.

vg236he is what I have, highly recommended

if you buy a monitor now, it would be dumb not to go 120hz

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3842/asus-vg236h-review-our-first-look-at-120hz/2

quote from there

Side by side with a traditional 60Hz LCD, the difference is striking. Further, instead of getting tearing above 60 FPS like you would with vsync off on a traditional 60Hz LCD, you get smoother gameplay that just looks more fluid. I definitely can tell the difference, and now I don't want to go back... The result is a similar kind of once you've experienced it, you can't go back to a solid state drive.

As far as 120Hz monitors are concerned, yes they are even better for fast paced games, even at 60 fps, but they also cost at least 50% more (100$) so it might not be worth it for everyone. If you have the money and want to play those games, then sure, go for it. But if you want to play at 120 fps you will need a super expensive gpu with great cooling and a lot of air conditionning.

If you're willing to save a bit, go for a Yamakasi Catleap. They're the same panel as the Apple Cinema Displays, but with a slightly higher chance of dead pixels. To resolve that, get a perfect pixel version. These monitors are awesome. 6ms response time (personally, I can't notice anything lower than that), 1440p, IPS. There are some issues, but if you're willing to live with them, by all means, go for it.

I believe someone on these forums has one, you might want to speak to them.

Oh, and on some models, you can 'overclock' the refresh rate from 60hz up to 95hz.

Some 60hz monitor have the option to play at 75hz if you choose a lower resolution such as1280 x 1024. 75fps will give super smooth gameplay.

That's different for everyone. Some people are able to see more frames than others. Besides, it's unrealistic to think that you will be able to play many games at 120fps with high settings at your monitor's native resolution. If you have a super computer and a massive air conditioner in your room, then yes you might be able to do that. Also, not all 120hz monitors have the same amount of input lag. Personally, I'd rather play at my monitor's native resolution. Right now, my GPU is barely able to generate constant 60fps on high @ 1080p. In a few years I will probably go for a good 120hz IPS panel.

So if I get a 120hz monitor, will it be really hard to max games? unless I had like a 680. All I currently have is a 460. I do play FPS games like BF3. CS:S, Cod. So now I am leaning towards a 120hz monitor, but currently I am playing at a resolution of 1768x992 (because I am using a TV) and I can run BF3 at almost max setings. If I switch to a 120hz monitor will I get really bad performance with my 460?

Also my budget would probably be around $250, so what would be the absolute best monitor I could get ??

Thanks for all the help!! Without you guys I would have no clue!! :)

Well first of all you need to choose between IPS and TN. If you go TN (meaning you plan on playing a lot of FPS games), then you could go 120hz if you plan on keeping it for a long time (future proof). If you go IPS, the colors might be a little nicer, but you might be disappointed by the motion performance, response time and backlight bleeding.

The GTX 460 will most likely barely be able to play newer games in 1080p at 60fps, but you will be able to take advantage of a of a 120hz monitorin older games (especially CS:S). At 60fps, 120hz monitors will be a bit smoother than 60hz TN panels, which are already much better than IPS panels for fast-paced games.

Well the main FPS games I play are BF3. CS:S and Cod, so for $250 what is the best monitor i can get? Ips panels have much better colour from what I understand and TN panels have a faster refresh rate? I am having a really tough time deciding on this! There is so much to consider and because I only have 460 I won't be getting the best performance. Although I will likely upgrade to a 670 in the next couple months.

Is thisASUS VE247H any good? Its got 10,000,000:1 contrast and 2ms. Although it is 60hz, but I don't think I will be able to get 120hz within my price range of $250. Also is this an Ips or TN?

Theres also thisSamsung S24B300HL.

This Ips is $130 off so it seems like a good dealLG IPS231P 23IN.

What would you suggest in IPS screens? 21-27 inches area.
