I have never really tried a "real " pc game, so i bought Rome Total War from steam. So, i maxed everything out and it runs smooth as butter and looks really good on my 54in plasma tv. I get through the tutorial and i am liking what i see. Then suddenly i run into difficulty at my first campaign. I cant even breach a small city wall and attack the city. Suddenly i feel stupid and frustrated and wonder what the hell is wrong with me. Is this game suitable for newbies, or am i just making this more difficult than it really is? I dont want to give up, but i have a lot more fun playing Dirt 2.

The total war games have a slight learning curve. Once you get used to it, you don't need to think twice about how to do anything.

Just build a few battering rams and have plenty of archers. Once you have catapults or ballistae you can breach the walls. Alway be sure to have the upper hand numbers wise. Also be sure to let your troops rank up.

That's perfectly normal when you play a RTS for the first time. Keep trying, doesn't give up just because you can't win at first. In Total War series you can't win all battles, just like real life.

Rome Total War is a great game but if you want to step into the wonderful world of pc gaming, I wouldn't recommended it as a first trip.

Read some reviews of Company Of Heroes & Dawn Of War II.
Both typical PC games but breezy and friendly enough for a (soon to be ex-) console player to get into.

Drop the game for a while and pick up something easier. Diablo 2 or Torchlight would be MUCH easier and a better introduction.

You need some of the following.. rams, ladders, siege towers, catapults, and/or elephants to breach walls. Once your actually in the walls you need to take the center region of the city.

I have two catapults, but i thought they were for lobbing boulders at troops behind the wall...ha, i did not think i could aim them at the walls...and they are only good for one shot each...they dont auto-reload. I will try again.

Honestly itwasnt the best rts to start with, but not a bad one either.

starting off with some easier C&C (command and conquer) or TA, (total annihilation), or star craft.. not saying they are better games, just better to start out on rts with, because they are more straight forward.

though i would say keep going on this game.. it will get better and easier, and the understanding of the game will become more and more clear over time.

no worries my friend, i have been gaming well over 2 decades, and i still have to spend anywhere from 30 minutes- to most of the day getting use to some of these games.

i just recently purchased CoH, Company of heroes, because i upgraded to a phenom II :) wanted to see how it ran (not to mention i have heard it was one of the best RTS games out) .. and i would have to say its sweet, the tutorial took me about 2 hours, and im still learning to do things in the campaign, atleast 2 hours there as well.

but i would say get company of heroes or world in conflict.. but only if you have a really beefy pc.. atleast a quad core with an 8800gt/3870 or better.

The most successful strategy in the total war games is usually to wait the city out. Siege but don't attack. Eventually they will have to come out and fight you or risk starvation. Then you fight them on your terms and you will save a lot of troops that way. Don't be in a hurry to take over the world too quick.

They do auto-reload, it just takes 30 seconds or so. :) And yeah, they work awesomely well against city walls or gates. Prepare to watch stuff collapse whenever you come back to the game!

First time playing any total war games is alot to take. But its like riding a bike once you get it you get it and everything becomes soo much more fun when you start planning stratagies etc...

Give it a few weeks!
