Alright I decided that I DO NOT want to build my own pc. My friend has a dell pc and a dell laptop and he has had no problems with them, and i must say that they seem to run very good and smooth. So I'm thinking about getting a dell.

It is gonna have a Quad Core Q6600 CPU, 4 gb of DDR2 ram at 800MHz, 500 GB HDD 7,200 RPM w/ 16mb cahce, and an8800 GTX,

Will it be a good rig? it'll be aroun $2,000. (w/ everything like monitor, speakers, and what not)

And if any knows or likes another prebuilt pc company that is better/cheaper, please tell me.

Personally, I have more problems with my Prebuilts, but that does seem pricey for a computer of those specs. that is probably about $1500 in parts. You should just get an 8800gt instead if you can and you should be able to save about $100.

You might check out HP......

I did some mild customization on a d4996t series machine and here's what you got for a grand total of $1689.99

Windows Vista Home Premium

Intel Core 2 Duo (E6750) @ 2.66GHz

3GB RAM

nVidia 8800GTS (640MB)

802.11 b/g Wireless LAN Card

500GB SATA Hard Drive @ 7200RPM

16x Lightscribe DVD+/-R/RW 'SuperMulti Drive'

15-in-1 Memory Card Reader

Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio

15mo. subscription to Norton Internet Security

I can personally vouch for them, as I've been using a lower spec desktop (a1130n) for the past two years that's been nothing but a good, solid workhorse for me.

the GTX is like double the price for like 10-15% increase in performance, go for the 8800GT instead the proce will probably go down by alot too.

That's not a bad price for a Dell. However, it should be kept in mind that much of dell's reputation is based upon making reliable business machines. Dell's backbone hardware (motherboards, ram) are not consumer product lines, they're fabricated specifically for Dell. This means that their hardware is general very stable and reliable, but not as fast as what the sum total of the components could be. My experience with them is that they are noticably slower then comparable machines from other sources, and much slower then DIY (maybe this has improved recently?). So long as you're OK with that, you obviously have a reason to buy prebuilt, then go for it, it'll be a good machine.

I just spec'd as similar a system as I could on Newegg and it cost $1503.85, including keyboard/mouse, 4GB ram, windows, monitor,... everything. Clearly the mobo and ram from newegg will perform much better then then the Dell equipment (I doubt Dell spent $250 on a mobo), but only a $300 difference compared to DIY is pretty good. HP may give better gaming performance (more off-the-shelf parts), but the Dell will probably be more reliable and their monitors are consistently decent.

alrighty, i can get pretty much the exact pc from hp for $1,560. the only difference is that the ram will be 667MHz and the monitor doesnt have a built in camera, buit thats not a big deal.

can you notice the difference in ram? (800Mhz and 667MHz)

Get a AVADirect if you really don't want to build your own,and don't get a 8800GTX,they ain't worth considering anymore,at least unless you game past 1680x1050.

I just did a price compare between built vs alienware. With the estimated price of having someone else put everything together alienware pc at $3699 I was able to price at $2771, almost a $1000 dollar savings.

Two things however, I will be using my existing Windows Vista license and my existing DVD player. Everything else including the hard drive would be new...(oh well not keyboard and mouse).

SEANMCAD

thats why i dont even consider looking at alienware, they are a complete rip. but most people think that you can save a huge amount of money on home builtover others like dells or hp's but they are actually close to the same price.

I would get 2GB of RAM at 800MHz (or maybe 667 MHz) and an 8800 GT and in turn upgrade you speakers to the next notch (which if my memory serves me correctly and you are getting a custom made Dell xPS 720 I know that because thats what I got) and get the 5.1 Surround speakers (cause thoe 2.1 speakers are garbage especially if you are getting a good sound card).

Make it 2gig of ram if you're comfortable just positioning more RAM In since it's cheaper to buy later and make it XP. Since Vista is terrible and then get vista next year when hopefully all the bugs are ironed out.

I was reading about the HP Blackbird 002 and apparently they offer a no maintenance water cooled system. You pretty much get to choose whatever you want in it. It seemed interesting. I've never attempted a water cooled system but one that's offered with no maintenance it would be nice to get it and overclock everything without the hastle of putting it all together.
