I got my PC a couple months back and I'm really enjoying it. However, most of the games I have are pretty weak (graphically) and I'm looking for something that will really push the limits of my rig and make me go "WOW". The only game that has really put me in awe (graphically) as of now was Dead Space (it KILLS the console version I played!), but even then, Dead Space is fairly old and I feel its not the best my PC could output. Since the most expensive part of my PC is the gfx card, I might as well utilize it to its full potential. I have a xfx Raedon 6870. Any game recommendations on great looking games? (The Mirrors Edge thread in SW reminded me that I've always wanted to play that on PC, but I'm waiting for a sale)

Dead space doesn't require much power to run and it typically isn't used to judge a PCs performance. The witcher 2-very beautiful game and takes a relatively strong system to play smoothly at high details. Battlefield 3-Large scale with a ton of action going on, 64 player games will push you system. Crysis, Warhead and Crysis 2-I bet even the older crysis games will give your 6870 a run for it's money with settings turned up. Metro 2033-While I think the game doesn't look as good as it should given the steep requirements for a high fps many will say grab this (it's always on sale and does look good). Some more, Shogun 2, Max Payne 3, Batman Arkham City.

Nice recommends. I've always wanted to try Crysis to see if I can max it out. Last time I asked about it here I got mixed replies: some saying I can max it while others saying there was no way I could, so I'm curious about that. I've been hearing good things about Metro 2033 around these forums, so I will get that next time it's on sale.

Shogun 2 looks great, I love those types of games. Is Shogun 2 a good game in the Total War series to start with?

Metro 2033 is a game people often use for benchmarking. As far as I can tell, on full max with DX11, there aren't any cards that can run that at a full 60fps the whole time.

A 690 maybe, but I'm sure even some dips will happen.

Battlefield 3 is another title that is well optimized but still requires a somewhat beefy rig to get the best visuals.

My 6870 won't play Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3 on max with a decent framerate. It won't play The Witcher 2 with ubersampling on with a decent framerate either.

Well with Crysis 1 it was very demanding and people were desperate to say they were maxing out its settings when in reality they were only doing so at 28-30fps average. I don't know what resolution you play at, but for me at 1080p with 4xAA it wasn't until my GTX 670 that I really got the fps I wanted with all settings to very high. Even there are some things I would like to tweak in the config like extending the draw distance on certain ground clutter which I'm sure would make the game even more demanding. Crysis 1 will push your 6870 at 1080p with 4xAA. I've never played shogun or any total war, but seeing screenshots from it you can tell it takes some hardware to get good FPS.

Yeah even now Crysis is still hard to run for some, a buddy of mine with an Overclocked GTX 460 can run it all max (a good 4 years after the game came out), but his framerate will occasionally dip into 30's territory. My own OC 460 is almost always around 30 unless I cut a few unnecessary and unnoticeable extras.

Still, doesn't your 6870 run those games well with at least medium settings? I have a 5870m on my laptop and I can't crank some games at 1920x1080, but games like Crysis and Crysis Warhead still ran pretty good on my laptop with medium/high settings (not highest, though). Arkham City also runs well with my 5870m without the "tesslation" or whatever tricks are included with DX11.

Yeah, it runs them all on high. I just figured he wanted games he could actually max out and get the best visuals possible.

In that case, perhaps Max Payne 3 (i haven't started playing it, yet, although I just installed it the other night) and Battlefield 3 can push the limits of a 6870. Although I don't think a 6870 will be able to crank those games to the highest settings at a 1920x1080 resolution.

Cool. Looks like Crysis is a tough beast to tame. BF3 seems like a safer bet though. Thanks for the advice, everyone

Remember, for a game to run smooth it is not only the graphics card involved. You can have a top of the line video card but if your processor is slow then it does you no good. I am running an Intel i7 3930k with 6 cores and I run everything cranked up. Even FSX gets about 80fps on the ground at large airports. YOu will not find a more demanding piece of software out there then FSX and it what I use as a benchmark when building new machines.

I can max Crysis and have it be playable. I cannot say the same for Battlefield 3.
