If I was to get say... an 8800 ultra... would I need to have alternate cooling methods? I don't overclock, and I don't really care about sli, but I don't really want to invest in cooling the computer.

Suggestions and knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Why did you have 8600 cards in SLI in the first place? That's $200 wasted right there.

At any rate, I'd just pick up an 8800GT, that would be a good upgrade that won't break the bank.

Agreed ^^

Don't get an Ultra, it's being phased out and replaced by much better options for more reasonable prices. And no, any card you buy shouldn't require extra cooling unless you plan to OC.

Thanks for posting guys. To answer that first question I bought the PC ready-built, and with those cards, crap for gaming I know but I figured it was a moderate starting point.

And don't some cards come already over-clocked? how would I look out for that?

They'll often have OC, or Superclock or something different in the name. If you wanted to make sure, you could find out the stock clocks of the card (600Mhz for the 8800GT I believe) and anything listed above that has been OC'd by the factory.

I have a basic 8800gts that I can overclock an extra 100MHz on the core and I don't have any kind of special cooling except for cranking the fans up. Don't worry about alternative cooling when purchasing a video card unless you plan to OC it extremely high.
