But you were willing to spend $700 on a marginal upgrade over what you currently have (those are single cards)...?

Buttons1990

That's the beauty of web forums - it's a slightly more civilised way of going to their houses and beating sense into them (when it's asked for. And when they listen).

Connecting it all up to a decent sized HDTV was a good 'upgrade' for me (although that was just a side-effect of getting an HDMI compatible graphics card...). Not necessarily practical of course, but meh, practicality can be overrated.

Buying another 5870 is a good choice. The crossfire scaling isn't all that horrible. You will be getting more for your money that way. After those babies get to feeling slow then you can upgrade to something in the GTX 6xx series or the AMD 7xxx series which will be a much nicer improvement then going from 5870 to 6970.

I do not think that GTA IV supports crossfire at all. You won't get much better performance with crossfired 5870's in that game.

How sure are you? Keep in mind that my i7-920 is overclocked to 4.02GHz and consumes 147W. Also, keep in mind all of my other components. I want to be absolutely sure. Also, how would it handle the 6970 + 6950 Crossfire setup, I described in the OP?

I'm running 3 hdds, a dvd-rw, an i5 750 @ 4ghz and 2 gtx 460's OCed on a 550 watt psu. It's not so much the wattage you need to look out for it's the amps on the 12 volt rail. The corsair psu you have uses a single 12 volt 60 amp rail. You could run three gtx 580 on that bad boy.

A 750 watt power supply should be able to handle both cards.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-5870-crossfirex-test-review/3

This review had the two 5870's in a PC with an i7 overclocked to 3.75 GHz. They recommend a 700 watt power supply for two 5870's. The 6970 consumes more power then a 5870 and a 6950 consumes less power then a 5870. You probably could get away with your 69xx series crossfire setup on your power supply. You might be cutting it a little close though.

I really didn't. It is better to marry a girl worth marrying than to have a ton of random girlfriendsthat willsleep with other mengive you AIDS and all sorts of fun stuff. Plus you can be selective with your genes and marry somebody that can actually produce good children instead of deformed wolf-children. Wow, I am way off topic here. Who cares.

There will always be more than one woman worth marrying/being with, so why limit yourself? That of course implies that you're a man worth marrying, which is a whole other feat to tackle. A good man is much more a rare commodity than a good woman. Instead of us as men taking advantage of this fact, most latch onto the first woman they "fall in love with". Not knowing that you can pretty much fall in love with any woman you spend any significant amount of time with. There are no advantages to marriage other than exclusive mating rights. Really thats all marriage boils down to. It's a old school ritual well past it's time. All of this of course being my opinion.

I really have to wonder what planet people in tech forums live on when I see threads like this. You aren't going to get significantly better performance than an i7 and a 5870 right now. Spend your money on something else or better yet give it to me if you're just going to waste it like this.

I'd be able to play Crysis at 60 FPS, while maxed out at 1920x1080 with 4xAA. That would be very noticeable.

As hard as it is (believe me, I know :P), save your money. There is no need for you to spend the money to upgrade just yet.

I made the same mistake of buying a second 480, a projector, and three monitors just because I had the money to upgrade. Verdict? Waste of money. If it wasn't for the triple monitor setup, I wouldn't need the second 480. And tbh, I regret the triple monitors as well due to the odd glitches here and there with it.

Your system is great as it is. Just stick with it for as long as you can, then do a massive overhaul later.

For some reason, I read "I will have $1500 by December." LOL. I'm so out of it. Honestly, you don't need an upgrade. But if you do, just stick to one GPU. There are very few games that need the power of two GPUs. It's just useless, imho. I'm even thinking about selling both of my GTX 460's and just buying one GPU like a GTX 570 or 580. I'm waiting until the 580 drops in price or some miracle. :)

I'm more than fine with the monitor I have now. It's not as if I look at it from the sides. I look at it straight ahead, so I have no need for a monitor with an IPS panel.

My dude, ignorance is bliss. I've never seen a monitor with an IPS panel, so I don't even know what I'm missing; I can't notice that my monitor has relatively poor image quality to an IPS panel, because I've only dealt with TN panels. On the other hand, I can definitely notice the frame rate dips I get in GTA IV and Metro 2033.

If you really want to spend a bit just get an SSD and you can get a second video card. You could also get a second monitor for some nice dual-screen action I guess as well. Nothing in your system looks terribly out of date (my 920 still handles things great @ 4.2ghz OCed) the new SB processors are nice but I don't think you would see the return-on-investment that you would want to get as if you were upgrading from a S775 processor.

Get youtself a 360 with those game and there won't be fps problems anymore.

lol he can play both the games perfectly smooth if only he would just lower a few settings.

Buy another 5870 or two 6950s and a big SSD hard drive. That'll fix your FPS problems. Can also throw in some more RAM and a bigger PSU.
