Whatever you feel comfortable with, but I would be a little worried to run a 4870x2 at 100% fan spped. Without jumping to water cooling it would be tough to find an aftermarket cooling solution. I dont know of any aircooled heatsink for it.

I have the same card as you. I just installed the Catalyst 8.10 drivers, and the CCC under ATI Overdrive now has a fan slider. Prior to these new drivers, my card was getting up to 83C when I played Crysis.

I set my fan to 43% and the GPU now onlly gets to 63c, and is still very quite. I would not put this fan on the x2 to 100. You don't need to set it that high and it is obnoxiously loud.

These new drivers are awesome. Prior to these drivers, I had everything set to Very High except the Shaders which were set to High. Now I can set Crysis shaders to Very High and the graphics are awesome and very playable.

Running a fan at 100% doesn't shorten its life at all. If anything changing the speed constantly will shorten the lifespan of a fan.

If sound doesn't bother you I'd set it at 100%. Cooler temps=longer lasting GPU,and like the above guy said...constantly changing the fan speed may wear out a fan quicker than having it at 100% at all times, and thats what your fan does when not set at a specific speed. It adjust to your GPU's temps. I've have my 9600gt for a few months and the fan is at 100% at all times, and it's still going.

I keep my GTX280 at 75% because then it just blends in with all my case fans.
