I just bought a new Zalman 7700 AlCu. I installed it on my q6600 un-overlocked, and when I turn on my PC and it idles out, it's around mid 30's, which is good. The problem is, I run games (like the Witcher) and it gets back up to 65-69. When I let it idle out after a game, it settles around 52. I thought getting this over my stock cooler would be much better...

LOL My stock fan with my X2 6000 Idles at 30 and maxes 47C, But anyways it sounds like a thermal paste problem ethier not enough or too much. Use a pea size amount and spread evenly across it. To clean it use alcohol and a Q-tip

It could have been my paste. I prepped the heatsink by putting a dot on it and spreading it around, but the I put a rather large line across the CPU. Should I take it off and repaste? It also might be that I have a case fan that came with my case, and it runs really hot as well; I can feel the air coming out the vent.

You should try to determine if the ambient temperature isn't over 40, but your saying that the cpu idles out at 37 so I wouldn't be concerned with the ambient temps. Reaply the termal paste or get some arctic silver and make sure you don't pt too much.

A couple of things, one, spend the extra money on a better paste, IT'S WORTH IT, second, how cramped is it in your case? Do you have a lot of IDE cables and other wiring impeding your airflow? do your intake vents look clean?

Also, is this all upgraded equipment in an older case, sometimes older cases just dont have enough vents to allow the higher CFM's of air needed to cool the system,

And lastly, use a utility to monitor your fan speed and temperature, your controller may not be doing its job, controlling the fan speed, you may need to manually set it to full.

I have the same CPU, and I am running the factory cooling solution on it, and I play Crysis, Quake Wars, Bioshock, all sorts of things without it getting as hot as yours is.

My system:

The Q6600 is rated for 100C TJ and 65C TC. I don't know which temp you are looking at. You are probably looking at TJ so I don't see any problems.

As for the case, It's new. Here it is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811145047

I just reapplied it, using less; but this time I spread it out on both the heatsink and the CPU, but not very much at all. I am using Arctic Silver Ceramique, they didn't have the silver 5 for less than the 20 dollar tubes. It's still idling around 40-42, Haven't tried it with games yet. Maybe it just runs hot.

Isn't that stuff permanent? I wouldn't be concerned about idling heats, it is a matter of load heats really.
