I'm planning to upgrade to a GTS 250(cuz its the best card available within my budget and I have lost faith in ati after running into too many heating problems. I gues here in india they use cheap parts), will today games work on it(Say crysis(its old but then again it does enjoy murdering cards), modern warfare 2) ? my other specs are:

Win XP Media Centre

Pentium D 2.8 GHz 1 MB L2 Cache

2 GB DDRII RAM

Thanx for the(hopefull) Replies

I recently upgraded to a GTS 250 and all my games work fine if not better but that CPU is a no no. I'm using a C2D E6750 2.66 GHz....not new but certainly is still pretty good since my monitor isn't exactly huge (its a 19 inch, thats what she said! =P)

pentium D is not the worst of the worst, it has HT technology the same whats now in the corei7. Resident evil 5 recommends even a pentium d as a minimum for same that you would need an real athlon dualcore on my box.

The Hyper-Threading technology in the Pentium D series is NOT the same as the Hyper-Threading Technology in the Core i series. Intel has made it VERY clear that they are not to be taken like they are the same, they are not.

Yeah but I need to forget about the cpu as of now cuz upgrading the cpu means changing the mother board which causes the total to become thrice my budget!

I'll change my cpu but later(I guess I'll just build a new PC then), but tell me, so yes it might bottleneck my gpu, but will the setup atleast be better than my integrated ati xpress200.(preferably better than the laptop I have been playing all the latest games on, it has a 8400m gs with a core2duo T5550 1.83 GHz)

I'm not only buying the card for gaming, but also cuz I'm starting work on after effects and 3ds max. Atleast the card will work with those two right?

:( I'm so confused right now. It seems that all the excitement I had developed on saving all that money has gone down the drain.

Lets get started, What is you're budget? I think the GTS 250's go for about 150: Lets see what we can do: this and this would be a bettr idea. Yes its about 175$, But it's definetly a stepping stone to a better PC for you.

Suppose later on that I got a budget of 224 $ from MSI, gigabyte, and asus. Which mobo should i chose.

I only have the option of intel e7500 as of now.

Also keep in mind that i'm in india and hence don't have access to all the models.

Also to help you out with choosing the mobo just follow the foll. links to some of the choices i have(my budget would be below 5000)

Yes well my budget is 170(the cards for 169.1$ here) but upgrading the cpu means that i'll have to upgrade my mobo as well that'll cost me atleast 224 $(54$ over my budget) That ofcorse is excluding the gpu.

hello dhruv, i am also from india

i would suggest u a 9800gt with ur cpu.

i have a 9800gt but i use it with c2d 2.2 but i thing that there is not so much performance difference in c2d 2.2 and p4d 2.8

u may only get 2-3 frames less than my specs

i get 35 fps in crysis island benchmark (direct x9, 1024X768,high, 4X AA)

and bad company 2 runs silky smooth with all settings in highest, direct x 10 and 16X AA at 1024X768, beyond this i haven't tested because my moniter doesn't support it.

my specification is on my sig.

zotac 9800gt 1gb ddr3 cost me around 6450rs inr in lucknow . i have purchase it 15 days ago.

Not sure what power supply you have, but it's something you might need to consider judging by the age of your system. For a gts 250 or 9800gt, you'll need something like 400-450W with around 25a on the 12v rail.

But I don't think it's worth getting either of those cards with that CPU like that, at the most I think a 9600gt would be more appropriate. No point spending more on a card that'll just be held back.

Oh thats cool, here its for 6500. well i'll check all my options. But everyine tell me one thing eill the rig im thinking of be better that my processor with my integrated ati xpress 200, if yes I dont might a slight lag even if it means lowering down my settings.(right now i face sever lags in games like half-life 2, nfs underground, nfs most wanted, so even a slight increase from these would be a huge thing) ill get the cpu upgrade later when i get the money as it is i upgraded the ram this year)

So does anyone know if the bottleneck is worse than my performance with the pentium d and the x200? also will the bottleneck be worse than a core2duo and an intel integrated graphics(all the mobos within my budget only have those).

I am buying a new psu as well. A 400 watt one. I wanted a gts so that i dont need to change my gpu too soon. I was planning on getting the 4670 earlier but now its just 20$(in india) less than the gts but has much lower performance. Which is why i want toget the gts.

so if u buy gts or 9800 now it will say it will give u a huge bump over ur previous graphic card which but not give the performmance that the card can give on duos and quads.bottlenecking means u will get only 5-10% less frames than it is on the faster cpu. i think go for 9800 and and save money for ur future cpu upgrade. gts outperformes 9800 only by a small margin and for ur currrent cpu 9800gt is the best and requires less power than gts250. if i was in ur place i surely buy 9800 and in 6 months or a year upgrade my cpu.

I get that but a core2duo with an intel integrated graphics would be much worse. There wont be much difference than my current config. i can live with a 10-20% frame rate drop with a gts 250 paired up with my cpu, but an intel graphics with a core2duo would be 50-60% drop in frame rates. I wouldn't be able to start work and would've spent my money on nothing. I would rather sacrifice performance drop off the maximum rather than not be able to do anything at all If i get a 2.66 ghz core2duo (i'll nee a new mobo cuz my one doesn't support core2duo), i'll have to get one that only has an intel gma 950 which scored a zero in 3dmark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not going to waste my money like that, I need to start working, that card is worse than what I already am using. So forget the core2duo upgrade I'll do it later. I have already said that I wont be able to get anew graphics card within my budget if i get the cpu upgrade. Its either graphics or cpu/mobo. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Graphics-Media-Accelerator-950.2177.0.html

Now My card(xpress 200) got a min. score in 3dmark06 of 140 the intel got one of 0. My average is 196 intel gmas avg. is 132.

Now please tell me what will be better a gts 250 with a pentium d, OR an intel gma 950 with a core2duo(cuz thats what i can afford).

sure u have to go with gts250. intel accelerator with core2duo is the worst thing u are thinking about.

i bet u will get atleast 30 frames at everything maxed out with 4Xaa at 1024X768 resolution.

with intel accelerator u wont be able to even start the game.

and gts 250 is more beneficial to 3d's max than a core 2 duo with intel accelerator.

can u give me ur gtalk id so we can talk better and clearly on it.
