New socket LGA1366... so need to change motherboard again??? They say the price will be around $200 for the mainstream and its clocked at 2.66Ghz, the high-end will release late maybe January 2009 and its clocked 3.0Ghz... It has 4 physical core with all core support Hyper Threading that enable 1 core to act as if were 2 core, so 8 core are available...

I'm planning to save money from now on and buy it soon when it Unleashed by Intel... I hope the Mobo X58chipset will be available at that time... How bout U?

1 core can handle 2 threads, very different from "acting like 2 cores."
Don't expect to find Nelahem for less than $300 until the end of '09.

Seems like a waste of money for gaming imo.

Also it will have built-in memory controller... SO non of that buying that older motherboard to support old memory types. The only memory thats supported will be the one the processor supports.

Considering what Hyperthreading was before it almost is 2 cores. I remember for a while Hyperthreading outperformed Dual-core chips.

Also it wil have an intergrated memory controller. Which means it wiil offer faster memory access at lower latencies. Also means that Nahalem will be stuck supporting only DD3 for a while.

Considering that they will be increasing the performance aswell as adding significant amount of tech to the new processor... I would think otherwise.

I'll wait till nvidia releases an SLi chipset for the new CPU, and when both are within my budget to do so. Though for me, that would equate to more like ~$150~160 USD for the CPU, which is about what I paid for my E6300.

I've not been paying attention to new hardware for like 2 years so dont LOL too hard..but..I thought that practically nothing out there, especially games, even takes advantage of dual cores still?? So why the hell go for 4..or 8?? You're still just burning on one cpu at 2.66Ghz right?? *ducks*

intell will never let nvidia use nehalm cpu on their motherboard but the good news is that the next x58 motherboard will support for the first time (if i am not mistaken ) crosfire and sli at the same time)

So pirates can rip DVD's and share them on the internet in real time, that's why they sell a CPU capable of processing 8 threads. But really I see this more useful for video editing and encoding etc... More of a workstation thing.

I can't see the point... Total waste of money.

Quad cores havn't even reached their "prime"... and won't for a while.. Hell Dual cores have just broke out into the majority... Software's support of hardware progresses too slowly... and makes this nearly useless.

I can't see much of these selling unless bought by idiots with money and want bragging rights or big multi-media junkies.

Not this year mate. I'm looking to step into the realm of Nehalem Q3 2009. We should be seeing entry-lvl Nehalems for around $300 or less. We'll see. ;)

The entry level ones aren't coming out till late 2009 so I think I"ll pass on the $300-$400 cpu/$200-$250 motherboard and $100+ ram till 2010 when its needed and cheaper.

Well I'll wait to see the price to performance ratio. After all AMD is working on Shanghai so Intel will still have to keep prices competative.

Also even if a quad's cores aren't all used in games the Nehalem architecture is going to have an integrated memory controller so we might see some gains simply for that fact.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll get it then, since my build should last me a good while.

nehalem will be completely useless since most games depend on the gpu rather than the cpu,so its kind of stupid to buy an expensive processor + the motherboard that supports its socket + ddr3 ram the for just a minor improvement that gamers won't even feel

From what I understand, Intel is licensing the SLI chip from Nvidia and will be using it in certain boards that will be able to support both Crossfire and SLI. These boards likely won't be available at launch, and I'm not sure if they'll trickle down to the mainstream boards or not, but SLI is indeed coming to LGA 1336.

I don't see why they couldn't have named it LGA1337 though, not 1336. Seems a bit of a waste opputunity. Anyway, I won't be.

Not for a long time, seems like a huge waste for gaming. I mean 9/10 times your GPU is a bottleneck, not your CPU. Unless you're into workstations or hardcore media stuff then I see no point in picking up one of these for gaming.

Unless you're a crazy enthusiast ofc.

I could have sworn the Nehalem with graphics processing capability would only be found in mobile devices, never on Desktops?

Having an 8 core CPU is impractical at this time. Games havent yet fully optimized dual and quad core CPUs. The 8 core CPUs are probably for businesses who have large amount of servers.

intel wants everyone to buy into their Larabee (a.k.a. intel GMA 2, or Extreme Graphics 3, whichever you prefer). Like hell they'd support NVIDIA. Then again, I'm surprised that they're still allowing CrossFire on their chipsets, given the rivalry between them and AMD.

Well, intel will no doubt market nehalem as an 8-way chip, if they're bringing HyperThreading back in. If anything, the bigger question (IMO) is where the hell are the quad-cores for the notebooks?

They will market Nehalem as a quad core chip with hyper threading... Marketing quad core CPU as 8 core cpu is like marketing TN LCD as IPS LCD.

Useless, but overkill is nice to have.
