Sata performance might become instable or worse overtime.

*Update Sata port 0 and 1 works fine due they are on another sata controller.

However the problem still remains on the other sata 3,0 ports.

It will effect your harddrive and dvd performance over time.

at least I don't have to return my chip. ASUS should be good about returns though

So this only affects motherboards, right?

Daytona_178

It is the chipset. All P67 boards are affected.

I'm just going to use the Marvell ports instead of the P67 ones - should be good till RMA.

Some people won't have another SATA controller though.

Reminds me a bit about the Foxconn LGA1156 socket grids corroding on the first shipments of boards... Major panic all around at the time but matters got settled pretty quick...

In the grand scheme of things it really isn't that big a deal: only the 3Gb/s SATA ports are affected (and even then the estimated failure rate is only 5-15% over time); so unless you need those ports on your 67-series board or are one of the poor bastards who bought an H61 board or Sandy Bridge laptop, the most you'll need to worry about is reorganizing your SATA connections and waiting for Intel to iron-out the recall process.

The real issue is that the 6-series supposively won't be back in good supply until April, with shipments of the revised chipset not taking place until late March. AMD must be positively giddy: not only will this drive people towards Phenom II, but it gives Intel far less of a head-start over Bulldozer.

Atleast it was "Intel finds" rather than "3000 angry customers find"... So the good news is intel are honest in their mistake and accept the loss so when the fixed chipsets are out i'm sure i'll be pretty happy if i ever buy one... I do want one though but probably not until Q4 this year.

It could have been angry customers that helped them with the find. I doubt any corporate company will come out and say, our bad, we haven't been doing contininueous research on our products but 3000 angry customers helped us find this huge flaw. Of course "name of large corporation here" will take the title as the caring corporation for good PR. As to what really happened, we dont know because there wasn't a lawsuit.

Either way, Intel had to fix this problem before it got out of hand. If they just ignored it they would have far more than 3000 angry customers :P

Well its funny nobody noticed this error until the article popped up... I can't find any forum posts anywhere so.... Where are the angry customers? Are they invisible? Have people complained about slow downs on data transfer on these chipsets? I don't see any...

Now is this an actually concern or is this just intel being overly carefully were there may only effect say 1 percent of users. Plus what exactly is the problem, i could only figure out there was some sata issues

Where did you see that it only affects the 3GB/s SATA ports. Am I to assume that the 6 GB/s sports are spared. The reason I ask is I just ordered gigabytes newest board (UD7) and the only thing using the 3 GB/s SATA port is the Blue-Ray burner sooooooooooooooooooooo

Should I refuse the order when it arrives in on Thursday-Friday and wait 1-2 months (guess on my part) until its hammered out....reaping any $$$$ benefits on my components in the system as their price will inevitably go down while I wait for Intel to hammer out the problem

OR.....................

Should I say screw it.......I'll be issued a new board when Its needed......I'm not so concerned at this point and.....ACCEPT THE Shipment ????

Any Advice ?????

For the moment, the recalling is just a precautionary matter, as very little boards seem to be affected... The problem consists of a bug in the SATA controller, slowing down hard drive transfer rates...

Well it appears its only the 3 GB/S sata ports. On the board I ordered there are 6 (2 sata e's) 6gb/s sata ports. Guess I just won't use the 3's.

See below: (great summary)

I'm so glad I didn't upgrade. I almost pulled the trigger on a 2500K and Gigabyte P67 UD3, but thought better of it since it's new and unproven technology. I just looked at newegg and they've pulled all sandy bridge cpus and mobos from the website.

Instead of being the success the early reviews thought it would be, it looks like Sandy Bridge will go down as one of Intel's biggest flops.

TRUFAX time

1. All Cougar Point (P67/H67) chipsets are affected. These are the only chipsets for Sandy Bridge - everything is affected (yes, your laptop is too)

2. This is a silicon defect and it cannot be fixed by updating BIOS or firmware

3. This defect ONLY affects the SATA 3.0Gb/s ports as the bad transistor is on that PLL. I suggest using the P67 SATA 6.0Gb/s ports - and then any other SATA controllers you may have (Marvell, JMicron). You could possibly plug in your DVD burner into the 3.0Gb/s

4. WAIT for a gameplan from your retailer and manufacturer. There is no point RMAing the boards now - you will simply recieve another one with the same defect. You can return your Sandy Bridge platform is you desire but honestly - you will most likely recieve a replacement and as long as you don't use the SATA 3.0Gb/s ports (ports 2-5) you will be fine.

5. It is not immediate, the ports will degrade over time. This obviously kills any resale value the boards have.

6. Keep calm and carry on

EVEN MORE TRUFAX, TECHNICAL EDITION

1. Overclocking a Sandy Bridge platform basically overclocks everything else

2. The transistor in the SATA 3.0Gb/s controller has a thin gate oxide - you can turn it on with low voltages, but blasting it with the higher voltages of an overclocked SB wears it down. It also generates more heat, compounding the problem

3. Don't OC your SB chip so hard if you have mission-critical devices hooked up to your SATA 3.0Gb/s ports. If possible, move them to 6.0Gb/s ports.

 It's a minor defect, they estimated that only 5% would be affected over 3 years. And they're working on a fix.

Doesn't matter. The damage is done. Any time you issue a recall, it does serious damage to your brand. Just ask Toyota. That gas peddle issue only affected a small percentage of cars. But that recall was such a PR disaster that most people wouldn't touch a Toyota now with a ten foot pole.

What damage? Only 5% would be affected. I don't think everyone is going to panic and never go near intel again because of that. At least they doing something to fix it and not just keeping it under the radar.

Also, I don't think people have a problem with Toyota now, maybe for a short time after the incident, they make good cars.

Also having your SATA performance degrade isn't likely to kill you...

It's unlikely that performance will decrease, it's more likely you will start seeing errors, and then shrotly after see your system unusable, then crash alltogether. OFC this will happen after like 3 years.

Also having your SATA performance degrade isn't likely to kill you...

heh...unfortunately some people out there use there computers for something called work, and the data saved is vitally important-->its what puts food on their table. Don't underestimate data loss.
