It's good and better than ide just make sure you have sata connectors on your motherboard, + sata cables.

Yeah, and it comes with 2 cables, so that's maybe a HDD and a DVD drive that you could install. It'll also give you better ventilation in your case because you don't have those big, bulky IDE cables.

EDIT: Another harddrive you should consider is this one. It's $50 after using the code EMC614FCAV, but all you get is the harddrive when they ship it to you. No original packaging. But considering that, it's a great harddrive and I'm using one right now. Don't worry about it not working because it's recertified, either. There's not a single person who got a bad one that I can see.

SATA is the next generation of the IDE standard. The older ATA drives are called PATA (Parallel ATA) while SATA stands for Serial ATA. SATA is capable of much higher speeds than PATA drives. I currently have 2 SATA HDD's in my new computer and have had no problems in Linux and Windows.

You need to get slightly more knowledgeable friends. SATA drives are definitely better than PATA drives especially since the connecting cables are significantly thinner than those of PATA drives. I have 4 HDD in my computer now and i have no problems.
