I'm not, although I will be playing GW2 with it, and may end up leaving ToR for GW2 if it's as good as it's hype suggests.

But it seems like some people around here actually think that ToR will fail...how could this be?

Let's see what ToR has going for it:

1: Bioware and EA. Two of the biggest game developers/publishers in the industry are supporting this game...so funds will be near infinite, along with great experience in the RPG realm from Bioware, and the marketing arm of EA.

2: STAR WARS. I mean, their could be lightsaber shaped dog **** and people would wait in line to buy them...and now there's an MMO in the greatest space story ever told?

3: It's based on the PROVEN formula World of Warcraft created. Yes, the contrarians and angst filled gamers hate on WoW because it's popular...but it's still one of, if not THE most successful game of all time. There's a reason it generated so much success, and Bioware is using what WoW did as a guide in creating their game. For some crazy reason people see this as a negative...but why reinvinte the wheel?

4: The game actually looks good, and brings a lot of unique features to the MMO genre. I know people hate on the graphics and what not...but this is an MMO, it's meant to be played on as many systems as possible. The combat looks good, the classes appear pretty fleshed out, and the unique story elements should help ToR separate itself from all other MMO's out there.

So yeah, I think it's pretty silly to think ToR will fail. Will it have 11 million subscribers day 1? No, of course not. But gamers will flock to ToR and I believe most will be happy with what they find.

ToR's only competition is GW2 honestly...and luckily for ToR, GW2 isn't sub based...so it's not really competing with gamers wallets...so many will end up playing both (like me).

Im not doubting it for a second simply because this is Bioware, not Sony who is responsible for the tragic handling of Galaxies. Secondly, if they were smart the took alot from other MMO's like WoW and built upon those successes. Lastly, its StarWars. It will be huge!!

Im not expecting much success from TOR tbh. Im a big Star Wars fan and what i have seen of the game just looks boring. I think a few WoW addicts will try it because they long for something different but eventually they will end up back on WoW or on Guild Wars 2.

I think it will have some sucess, but i wouldn't bet it to pass World of Warcraft. It's hard for a game that's an imitation to be better than the real thing, and from the looks of it Bioware ain't really trying to make it better.

After watching a whole lot of videos recently (many from Gamescon), I decided to buy this game. I plan to play it mostly as a single player RPG though because it has some interesting features. such as the extensive voice dialogues and cutscenes, and also decision points that affect your storyline. I trust Bioware to make good games (except for one recent release we shall not mention) and I believe they will pull this off.

I figure it is worth the investment for 2-3 months of quality fun. Have no plans to play this long-term though.

Also, no this will not "take out WoW" but I would be surprised if it wasnt a big success. EA has already released statements about the record pre-order levels.

And that, in a nutshell, is why most new MMORPGs flounder and eventually go free-to-play.

I'm not sure what would be called a success for this game, but if that means anywhere near WoW's success, yes I doubt it. I don't doubt it will sell well at all. It's probably going to have tons of marketing behind it. I just doubt the staying power of it.

Are people who just casually play games going to be continuously drawn in to an MMO with a well defined narrative that you pretty religiously have to follow?

Are people who play WoW religiously, doing raid after raid, grinding away to get them that one up on everyone else going to want to play a game with less of a raid mentality, much less of a grind mentality, and generally less of a long-lasting draw?

I'm betting the answer to each of those questions is no, but you never know. I doubt people will be subscribed for years like they were to WoW.

W0W was the perfect storm for MMO's I think any MMO would have a hard time reaching the lofty bar set by it. I didn't play W0W and never will so I don't really have an opinion about it. IF they do the game (TOR) correctly and don't screw it up, I think it will be a BIG success. Time will tell but I know I'm gonna be playing the heck outa TOR and GW2.

TOR will do great and will most likely get excellent reviews. However, as players complete their stories, and may end up being somewhat disappointed in the mechanics that are most likely inferior to WoW's. And also realize the stories are for most of the part the same most of the population will unsubscribe>uninstall>go back to WoW. Complaining about the game not having all the features WoW has.

Of course WoW is very stagnant and compared to EverQuest 2, WoW changed very little compared to it.

With that said, after winning PvP of the show (PAX) from mmorpg.com I am fairly certain the game might have some hope. Looks like Mythic did some good, considering PvP was initially an afterthought.

Edit: Not only that, but, the game's PvP recieved huge ammounts of praise as well.

I think it'll be profitable, but doubt it'll take the position of WoW. 'Based on a proven formula' That 'proven formula' still exists and is extremely active, don't see how copying the same thing is gonna work if the execution isn't even on par (and to me, the art/graphics/animations aren't any good)

"Is anyone really doubting the success ToR will enjoy?" - What ? Doubt the sale success ? No, I don't - there are so many SW fans, geeks, nerds and etc. that the idea is plain stupid. Gaming expirience success ? Hell ye ... I would rather get Tera and play it for a month than get ToR, install it, play it for 2-3 hours and then uninstall it ...as much as I am a fan of MMORPGs on account that this game can't offer me anything else aside from lazers and lightsabers I see no reason to waste my time on it ... my money are on GW2. That can offer me much more than WoW, Rift, Lineage and whatever else there was out there years ago has ever offered me ...

Not sure, really. I guess it will sell like hotcakes in the beginning but I wonder how long it will last before people lose interest in it (if they ever will). But like I always said, if it doesn't come with a copy of KOTOR 3, then I'm not going to get it.... ever.

Pretty sure Guild Wars 2 will offer more longetivity than SWTOR. SWTOR will probably have more content, but I am pretty sure people will still be buying and playing Guild Wars 2, years after its release. I dont think SWTOR will enjoy the same success. SWTOR will dp extremely well the first months (going by pre-orders alone), but after a few months, most of the population will have left, returning to their previous mmos.

Why do I think GW2 will have more longetivity? Here is why

  1. GW2 looks rather unique (not innovative though), whereas SWTOR ends up being another game in the large pool of WoW clones, one dominated by a monster known as WoW. Why play SWTOR when WoW has had 7 years of refinement (not counting those years it has also been in development.
  2. PvP. Not only going by Guild Wars 1 alone, but also by the features in GW2; siege warfare, instanced PvP that does not necessarily have to use matchmaking, unlike SWTOR's. Not saying SWTOR's PvP is bad, it looks like Mythic got their stuff together and what they showed at PAX was great, people loved it and it even won PvP of the show from mmorpg.com.
  3. Dynamic Events making the world dynamic as opposed to static. SWTOR's world will feel static, GW2's world will feel a lot more alive and dynamic. One visit to an area may be different to your next visit to the same area.
  4. The combat in GW2 looks a lot more dynamic. SWTOR looks like the same old static combat that uses the awful trinity system that I really see more as an OBSTACLE to teamwork as opposed to something encouraging it.
  5. Story focused mmo is another reason, sure you can raid, but SWTOR's selling point, the story will only occupy a player for so long. Sure you can reroll, but about 75% of the story is the same for all classes of the same faction.

I just replied to his comment cause he already KNOWS that GW2 will not only offer more than ToR, but also WoW, Rift and Lineage and whatever other MMO before it. As for your points, they are all valid and hopefully GW2 can pull them off. Not being a troll or anything but if you put another MMOs name instead of GW2, then it's things every developer has promised before. As for Dynamic Events, I still doubt this...

Yes I am, looks like WoW in space to me. So far every WoW formula has failed.....except for WoW. People want something different, the same old crap with a Star Wars skin thrown on it is still the same old crap.

Will it be successful? Depends on how you measure success. Just being Star Wars is not enough, Galaxies proved that much.

So what you are saying is an intelligent person cannot look at what is known about both games to this point and make an evaluation based on that? Right now Guild Wars 2 is in fact offering a much more fresh and varied gameplay than TOR is. That is my evaluation based on what has been released about the games. Unless TOR is hiding something from us I don't see how anyone can be wrong in voicing this assessment.

I plan on getting TOR, not at launch, or pre-order, But I plan on getting it a couple of months after it launches, like I mentioned before, I have to get a few months of Diablo III time in first lol.

I always wanted a consistant and growing Star Wars universe to play in a videogame, (among other things, lol) This excites me!

Unless TOR really goes downhill in those first couple of months, (which I do not see happening, contrary to a lot of hate it receives) I will more than likely get it, I am very excited about the game. Found out David Hayter (Solid Snake) is doing the voice of the Jedi Knight, this made my day yesterday! His voice just makes me...

Don't think you will have that problem. ToR probably will launch December-January. I'm thinking they will hold off GW2 until mid 2012 so plenty of time to try BOTH

Considering that it's the only MMO that's even attempting to give the player a decent story, it's already a success in my eyes and I'll certainly be one of the first in line to grab a copy when it's released.

Bioware are playing it safe with ToR, people admire the new direction NCSoft are heading in, but I have yet to see proof that GW2's formula will succeed. Same can be said for ToR I suppose.

I don't think so. Guild Wars wasn't a real MMO in the sense that it was instanced. GW2 says it won't be instanced and will offer everything a regular MMORPG offers. I don't see how that's possible without some type of monthly revenue.

Ah that explains it. I knew they were going to have to do something.

Have they detailed what it will be like? Only microtransactions I'm used to are from EQ2 and DDO, and I didn't particularly like them. DDO was the worst, though.

[QUOTE="FelipeInside"]They aren't doing monthly revenue but they will have micro-transactions.airshocker

Ah that explains it. I knew they were going to have to do something.

Have they detailed what it will be like? Only microtransactions I'm used to are from EQ2 and DDO, and I didn't particularly like them. DDO was the worst, though.

According to the devs these micro items you buy WON'T affect your character's performance/advantage and will be purely for show. This remains to be seen of course.

I don't doubt it's success. I just doubt how fun it will be. From what people are saying it will mainly be using the same old tired out WOW formula. I'm tired to death of that style of play and don't think I can stomach it anymore. May try it out but, it has to at least do some thing new in it's game play to keep me interested.

I'm really looking forward to TOR. As a huge fan of the Star Wars novels (although after Vector Prime and Chewies death I haven't exactly enjoyed the novels after the New Jedi Order as much as those before), plus its Bioware (who's biggest mistake has been Dragon Age: Awakening, and Dragon Age 2), I am intrested in what they are offering. For me a good MMO includes, exploration, storyline, and game play (although, I have made it through RPG's where the game play has sucked horribly..aka. Xenosaga, and Final Fantasy XIII). Plus, the chance for my friends to run through it together. TOR has been billed as a huge interactive story based game totallying over 700+ hours of gameplay. We will see, if it tells a good story and its fun and challenging it should do as well as WoW for me.

WoW held my attention since it first came out, and started getting bored when the only thing left to me was Raiding after WOTLK and Cataclysm was a bit of fun, but got boring after a few months of grinding to 85. I only lasted about a month in games like Guild Wars, Rift, and Aion.

Although, if the story is as good as the two books that have come out for it (Fatal Alliance, and Deceived), I don't think there is a lot to be worried about in the story department.

Yep, in the first book of the New Jedi Order series, Vector Prime. The Yuu....can't spell their name...dropped a moon on him. He sacrificed himself to save Anakin Solo...who died a few books later. ~sigh~ Talkin' about starting the water works.
