That's what I was going to say.
Lol, my first thought as well.
IMO, I don't think so. I played it through 3 times already and enjoyed every minute of it.

Bioshock is overrated. It gets stupidley hard and your weapons do practically nothing to the enemies towards the end of the game, but the start of it is one of the most fun, atmospheric games I have played.
One of the most over hyped shooters I have seen in a while.. Graphically it was great, gameplay wise it was average.. I think it was hyped so much so the 360 version would sell..
*opens the door slightly* BioShock is absolutely not overrated. It is one of the best games ever made. *glances back inside the door, listening to whispers* Its character development mechanics are... *hears a gun cock* excellent, the vita-chambers work extremely well, the combat is diverse and fun.
*listens to more whispers* Its story is.... *feels metal pressed against his temple* absolutely excellent and completely original. You will definitely never play a much better version of it in another game with Shock in the title. That's for sure.

After all the bad publicity you've been giving it, I wouldn't be surprised. :P

System Shock 2 is better, but that's no reason to skip on Bioshock. I'd recommend both to anyone I meet and if you enjoy one then you'll probably enjoy the other.

Yeah, I don't think people should skip it. But the question was, is it overrated - which it is. Violenly!
I rate BioShock about equal to games like Assassin's Creed and Quake 4. Worth playing.

Quake 4 > BioShock >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Assassin's Creed.
Edit: I never realized that BioShock was spelled that way instead of Bioshock. Hmm...
BioShock is a great game. Overrated? I wouldn't know; I don't watch TV. I just heard about the game online/at Gamestop, thought it looked good, and bought it. It was excellent. The people who say it is overrated bought into the hype, and have none but themselves to blame for any lackings it may have had in their eyes.
I will say, though, that the VitaChamber resurrect system should've been scrapped because it made things pretty easy, still, it was a great game with amazing atmosphere, gameplay, and story.

You can disable that under the game options menu. Lots of people complain about that feature, but it's easily remedied if you don't like it.
I think it got way too much praise for its atmosphere and art direction when the gameplay itself is decidedly ho-hum. The ending, which I guess was supposed to be some kind of big reveal, I saw coming from almost the beginning of the game...well, most of it anyway.
Here is the gameplay of Bioshock. You shoot guys. You have some special powers, most of which hardly matter, and you can't use them very often anyway. You can "hack" machines to help you. You can fail at it, but since this, like so many other PC games, allows you to save anywhere...well, you know how that goes. Actually, the ability to save anywhere hardly matters since dying hardly matters anyway. When you die, you are respawned with little consequence except for some walking.
Having a tough time fighting a Big Daddy? No problem, just lure it to a resurrection thing-a-ma-jig and keep shooting it and/or using your plasmids and dying over and over again; it doesn't matter. If you want challenge in a game, which apparently a lot of people don't these days, you won't find it here.
I don't know. To me it's almost like this should have been an adventure game, but we know those don't sell anymore, so they made it a shooter instead. If this game had been a bunch of puzzles or something and been the type of game it almost desperately wanted to be, and kept basically the same story arc, I might have had a bit more respect for it, but as it stands, nah, I really don't see what all the hype was about.
I'm not a big FPS fan, so take this all with a grain of salt I guess.

Ah, really?! I didn't know that, lol. Well, you learn something everyday. :P

If you always look for twists in the plot I can see why you saw it coming. I for one certainly didn't.

Most FPS games you simply shoot guys, so the added special powers adds diversity and options in combination with the shooting. And about the respawning, read what I posted above you.

If you're not a big FPS fan I can understand why you saw this the way you did, but if you played more FPS's you would see that the combat alone has more variety and potential than most FPS's. It also has some RPG elements, although they aren't very strong, which give it more variety. Bioshock could never pass off as an adventure game because it's core is it's combat, and there are virtually no puzzles. Yes, Bioshock is more of a hybrid than anything else, but just because it doesn't push one genre forward above other games of that genre doesn't mean it's a bad game.

Don't read this if you don't want any hints about the ending:
Well, it was convenient that this stranger just starts talking to you on the radio right at the beginning, but the really big tip off for me was when you are supposed to meet him, and then right at the last possible moment he happens to have a reason not to show up.
Imho it's not overrated.
It's a great game and is one of only a handful of FPS's games that actually has a compelling story and a twist that you couldn't predict, 3mins into the game (I'm looking at you! STALKER).
1nverted
I highly doubt you expected any of the twists that Stalker had in store, especially three minutes into the game.

STALKER didn't really have twists. I did only play through once, but I think that's enough to know whether a game had twists or not. If it did have some, they were nowhere near the level of Bioshock's main plot twist.

Not necessarily.
Firstly, BioShock has a gamesranking.com rating of 95%, making it one of the highest rated PC games of all time. Hype has nothing at all to do with believing that a mediocre game doesn't deserve to be one of the highest scoring PC games ever made, does it?
And secondly... people who say BioShock isn't overrated, but who also haven't played its spiritual predecessor have no right to make any claims about BioShock's quality - if they want their claims to carry weight, anyway.
BioShock is a very, very bad copy of a game that does deserve to be one of the highest rated PC games of all time. And if your avatar is anything to judge by you probably don't even know which game I'm talking about...

From what i experianced, Stalker had one huge twist and another twist if you managed to echieve one of the good endings.

THat's funny, because I predicted it the moment I heard Atlas' voice.

Same, the Bioshock twist was good, bit not mind blowingly unexpected.
No it is not. The story is phantasmagorical. The graphics are amazing. Environment is revolutionary. AI are actually intellegent. Big Daddy's are really, really fun to mess with.xialon
ye... not to mention it being nominated for almost every award.....I realy want to play that game for pc...cant wait:)

What are the main aspects of BioShock that make you think it's a better game than System Shock 2?
How does one even quantify "over-rated-ness"? Never played Bioshock (other then the demo), so I don't even have my hat in the ring...but curious as to how anybody can say whether something is "overrated" or not.
Seems like saying something is "overrated" is some new fad or something...because I have seen a "X is overrated" for just about every single popular game that has been released...

You rated Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles a 2.8, yeah? GameSpot rated it an 8. That is you stating through the awesome power of numbers that you think GameSpot has ovverrated the game. Then imagine if every site and publication gave it 8+. Then imagine if it sold over three million units and won numerous game of the year awards, and forums were full of praise for the magnificent game that is Crystal Chronicles.
Describing something as being overrated is taking popular opinion and your opinion and reconciling the two. I wouldn't call that a fad, myself, but I agree that modern games are being more harshly criticised by certain groups - not that I necessarily see that as a bad thing. Someone has to do it, because the critics sure as hell aren't.
BioShock is to me as Crystal Chronicles is to you (well, not quite, bit you get the picture) and BioShock is pretty much the second or third highest rated PC game of all ever, and it absolutely does not deserve it at all.
