My 2 cents...

How the hell could anyone enjoy it? It was slow and felt like a console shooter. Alright, thats the gameplay. Now lets get the story! Holy **** this game is messed up. The first boss you fight is cutting a girl up and wondering why she is not beautiful. Then he screams, "WHY CANT I MAKE THESE THINGS BEAUTIFUL" *lighting strikes* You see bodies strung up all the over the walls (naked?). Then he proceeds to stab the the STILL LIVING girl multiple times as she squirms helplessly.

WTF!

Yeah, that was my reaction. I quit playing after this. Regret every second I wasted on this disgusting game.

SgtMoreless

Disgusting? The likes of Wolfenstein and HL2 are not exactly sensitized my friend and you bought those correct?

I own both. Have not played hl2 (shut up...lol) and I have played the whole way through Return to castle wolfenstien and the newest release. And nothing comes close to this.

There is just something about chained up woman being cut and stabbed that turned me away from this game.

well duh, the guy went mad with trying to create a beautiful/perfect person, hence why he screams "Ugly, UGLY" he became obsessed with beauty. If that somehow creeps you out, then lol

Yeah we won't change his mind. People on this forum are pretty pedantic when it comes to bashing Bioshock. One a guy told me he didn't like it because there was "too much red" in the colour scheme :|

Sorry Sarge, but have you played Batman yet? You'll hate that if you havent!! *remembers Riddlers baby riddle*

Have not played Batman yet. No, I dont think you can change my mind. I said it was my 2 cents.

Oh, and to the guy who thinks that I dont like the game because I dislike perfectionist, go re-read what I wrote. Then re-read it agian. Cause that went WAY over your head. Hell, I will just explain it to you: I was put off by the guy chopping and stabbing the girl while she squirmed around.

Im not big into horror films (NO IM NOT SAYING THIS IS A HORROR FILM) I just dont like sadistic things like this. I dont play games to watch cut scenes like this. I play games to blow **** up.

You can find the game for very cheap. I got it on Steam for $5. It's defiantly worth it. The presentation, sound, atmosphere, and story are all excellent. The game play was solid but could have been better. I played on hard and ran through and just used the wrench the entire time. Ammo seemed hard to come by and I always saved up the little ammo I had for bosses/big daddys.

I think he more meant that the only people who would get joy from that scene are sadists. Basicly, he went into Bioshock thinking it was a run-of-the-mill shooter, found out it was actually more of a dark atmospheric experience, got creeped out, and didn't like it.

Well bioshock is def dark, but not sadistic; and that wasnt even creepy, that woman crying next to the baby cradle was the only thing that actually creeped me out.

Are we really still making the Vita chamber complaint? Even after the developers rectified it with a patch? I mean the STALKER fans will whip out their mods and enhancements updates just the same. Even before the patch if it bothered you that much you could just quick load when you died. Thats what I did.

biggest_loser

I never understood why everyone complains so bitterly about the Vita-Chambers. It's flawed but not game breaking. Are people just throwing themselves at enemies again and again, making gameplay a war of attrition?

The solution is simple: if you don't like them, then don't abuse them.

Eh I picked up Bioshock when it was on sale on steam for 4.99 so that was good. I managed to get about 50% done then just quit from boredom I guess. I didenjoy the atmosphere and the graphics especially were nice when it was released.

The part where the game falls apart imo is the gun play. I'd rate it as probably the worst FPS gunplay of the current gen, granted I haven't played every FPS released this gen but It still it was horrid. The special powers were pretty cool but alot of them felt kinda useless to me. SS2 which I played through when it was released last decade hooked me from start to finish, Bioshock not so much.

don't listen to the people who tell you that bioshock sucked and system shock 2 was good

no matter what other games were bad or good, bioshock is a very good game

the combat is fairly fun, but the whole point of the game is the story and the atmosphere both of which are excellent!

although bioshock is not my favorite game, the level with sander cohen is probably my favorite part of any game

at first i did not like it but after trying it again i really began to like it i have played through the cmapign a few times never got to finish it for one reason or another but a really good game none the less. The Major gripe for me was the MOUSE ACCELERATION hate this in pc games and ruins the game experience for me.

I own the game, and I still play it from time to time.

It happens to have one of the best storylines of any FPS. The only drawbacks are that it's linear (although you can explore), and weapons lack punch when NPCs get tougher.

I thought I was the only PC gamer in the world with a heart left, but I see you have a heart too. If you like that kind of thing and are not creeped out by it, I think that there is something wrong with you. I realize that by saying this, I'm probably gonna get flamed to hell and back, but all you people that enjoy and become happy by the dark atmospheres in games and movies are just plain creepy :P

a great game. fantastic visuals, solid gameplay and the FPS element is carried out surprisingly well. it has its flaws, of course - lack of enemy varieties, unbalanced and limited skills, and perhaps a tad too repetitive in some aspects. but overall, it's brilliant - and since i bought it with $5 i'd say it's stupefyingly great. :D

Yeah its a survival game, but bioshock, weird ammo capacities and mouse accelaration with combination of the running ai made the combat pretty much meh for me.

Wow. I'm not Bioshock apologist...I bought the game and never finished it because I got sick of it. But the people saying it's *bad*...well I can't agree with that. The atmosphere alone is enough to merit playing the game, and the gameplay is not nearly as terrible as people would have you believe. Come on people, try actually playing some real bad games. Try playing Area 51 for PC. That game is *actually* bad. This is all relative. Is Bioshock worse than some games? Sure. But it's definitely in the upper echelon of games in general, and that's coming from someone who didn't particularly enjoy it.

From what I have gathered, people REALLY need to lower their expectations. All of you Crysis, Bioshock, Far Cry, Doom 3, Oblivion, Half Life 2 haters should play pac-man and pong for a whole month. Then come back to these games. That will give you some perspective.
Seriously, what do you guys expect from developers? Think you can do a better job? I am not saying you should like everything the developers throw at you, but take a look back at where we came from.

Well i dont get why games get worse instead of better... eg SS2> bioshock, doom2>doom 3, far cry> crysis, half life > half life, deus ex>deux ex invisible war. I dont really agree with Morrowind> oblivion since morrowind is a brown/grey muddy island. but rpg wise morrowind is better. also cod>cod2. What am trying to point out is that games nowadays are turned from masterpieces.... to cheap and short next gen sequels with few content.

Like what happened to rainbow six and moh series.

I just for once wanna see a sequel which will stand up to the previous game and not another cheap quake iv.....hmm diablo 3?

Games nowadays is like that: kotor>mass effect. After all that time in development i expected much more from mass effect. Turns out that the developers did not manage to make a game that can stand up to their previous creation, no matter they took their time.

In other words:

"They dont make them like they used too..."

Being a critic is sure getting old for me. Nevertheless, just viewing as a Gamer, Bioshock gameplay was very dull, making for moments to tire you at your keyboard. It wasn't difficult by any stretch, especially at launch where you essentially had no penalty from dieing. The artistic direction, audio direction and story telling is what lured me to be continuous in Bioshock. It is a good game in that sense, but it has no grounds from a gameplay perspective worth noting.

I'm not a fan of FPS. I do like like some FPS games like COD4. I thought Bioshock was very boring. I only tried it out for a night and couldn't summon up the will power to play it again. It had a good story and setting but the action just wasn't that good.

Why should there always be a penalty for dying? I suppose people need to look past the whole die-game over-reset concept. At least they tried something new. I am not sure I enjoyed dying repeatedly during the final boss fight with no proper checkpoints in Wolfenstein - I wish there was a mechanic like this in that part of the game.

What baffles me is that so many people say that Bioshock is an amazing "game." Many will argue that the atmosphere and story are remarkable. But its hard to deny that the gameplay is severly lacking in several areas, which have already been discussed.

So my question is, how can a game with dull, repetitive, and bland gameplay be a good 'game?' It may be an impressive experience, but when it comes down to it, if the gameplay is lacking, no matter how good the story/atmosphere, the game will always be lacking. A game with fantastic gameplay and a mediocre story can still be a great game (look at Red Faction: Guerrilla), but it doesn't work in reverse.

So unless you actually think the gameplay in Bioshock is great, which i have difficulty seeing, i don't think Bioshock can be called an amazing game. When i buy a video game, i'm shelling out bucks so that i can revel in well designed gameplay, not observe the game developers ability to make water reflections. Without good gameplay, a game is like a modern movie without sound. It just doesn't work. Unless you are Charlie Chaplin.

I used to love Bioshock. That stopped the day I decided to hear the "haters" and played some old game by the name of System Shock 2. I still like the game but it's not such a big thing like I thougth before, and now prefer SS2 over it.

It is a good game in that sense, but it has no grounds from a gameplay perspective worth noting.

If there is no penalty on the player, then there is really no point at all for efforts. The developers behind Prey did manage to vicissitude the penalty, however it still resulted in everything being completely pointless.

New can be good or bad, but it really relevates the designer to truely construct something for the player to value from an indisputable POV. In the case of Bioshock(Launch) or Prey, not implementing a penalty feature was a poor design choice.

Well i dont get why games get worse instead of better... eg SS2> bioshock, doom2>doom 3, far cry> crysis

My mind just went blank after that.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

BioShock did almost everything right. Everything in the game was top notch, but the gameplay simply didn't hold up, drastically hurting my opinion of the game. It's by no means bad, but unfortunately not special either.

[QUOTE="chandu83"][QUOTE="OoSuperMarioO"] That depends on what the point is for you. If you want to feel like accomplished by beating death, then you are right. If on the other hand, you are looking to experience in the game in a different way, then there is definitely a point.

As kotor>mass effect, hl>hl2 and deus ex>invisible war. Or as ss2>bioshock. I guess the comparson is wrong, it should be far cry> far cry 2. But i loved far cry, so i was really dissapointed that crysis was something diffirent. Like doom 2> doom3 and the old wolfenstein> the new one. But the thing is those sequels are not bad, just diffirent from what the fans were used to. But as games their great in their own right.

Again, I would disagree with you - mostly because apart from the fact that they are both FPS games set on a tropical island and Crytek developed them, they have very little in common. So I don't know how you can actually compare them. Its like saying Deus Ex > Doom 3. There is no real basis for comparision. Say that Half Life 2 > Doom 3, sure it makes sense.

I am not the one complaining about cod mw2 being too much like the first.... But in any case far cry had much better maps in my opinion.

I don't know anything about MW2 and I am not buying it either. If you enjoyed Far Cry more than Crysis, good for you. But make sure you say that, instead of saying Far Cry is a better game. Because it clearly isn't. The graphics aren't better, doesn't have a quick save option, difficulty is a little crazy, no such thing as stealth - Crysis scores big time on all those.
People complain about bad AI, and I have honestly never encountered any. I played the game at hard difficult setting, and it was perfect for me - challenging yet fun.
