So it's the GOG sale today, and I'm picking up BG1 and 2 for myself and FlatOut for my kid brother. But I have some extra cash and need to figure out a fourth game to get.

My first thought was Beyond Good and Evil, but people say it's glitchy on PC so I thought of Psychonauts instead. But there is also Far Cry, which I have never played. Older graphics don't bother me, but I was wondering if Far Cry's gameplay has held up.

I've played the Crysis demo and disliked it; combat felt awkward to me and I couldn't get into that 'combat flow' that makes FPS good. Is Far Cry better? I keep hearing such amazing stuff about it, but if it's just like Crysis without gimmicky suit powers and worse graphics then I'll get Psychonauts instead. I also hear that the AI can snipe you with a pistol from really far away - that would irritate me to no end.

So. Should I get Far Cry?

Far Cry is one of the best first person shooters ever made. The graphics were so advanced for 2004, that they still hold up remarkably well even today. It's also brutally tough and has really advanced enemy AI. I may be alone in this, but I thought it was a better game than Crysis.

Really like far cry and really dislike crysis. My exact opinion about crysis is the same as yours. Ankward combat and weak gunplay which is what makes the fps good and gimmicky suit powers. Now far cry.... i consider it a hundrend times better. It did much more with what it had. Gunplay is far better, so is the ai detection rate and in my opinion it has much better gameplay and enviroments. A hint: try ducking while being close to enemies, it makes you more accurate and you cause less noise, thus the ai reacts and spots you much slower than running towards them.

Ah, thanks. So I'm envisioning something like first-person MGS3 meets the AI of FEAR and the gunplay of BLACK. Is that at all accurate? Because it sounds awesome. I really like hard games that are difficult but fair.

That's a fair assessment. The game requires you to use stealth or you'll be taken out quickly, and it has great gunplay and AI.

Stealth works like this: You wear a red and white shirt, so in order to sneak, you pull your binoculars and they automaticly mark the targets. Then you go there and see them in the radar. You hide behind a tree or some bushes and if the ai is looking at you, you will see the visiblity meter slowly rising. Get behind cover slowly to lower the visiblity meter. While close or inside a building, always duck so its harder to be seen, when you spot someone, you gotta take them out fast. For stealth kills you got a machete and a silenced smg. AI: They spot you at the rate of how close and how visible you are depending the vegetation, fast movements will make them spot you faster, slower movements and getting back to cover will slow down their reactions. If they spot you, they will shoot you and sometimes strafe as they do in fear. However they move slow as a team for most of its part. But make no mistake, rushing out on them will allert them and they will kill you pretty quick. You have to be ruthless, spot target, shoot, kill. Also there are elite blue troopers later that are much faster and tougher. The gunplay? Well its not like black because you are not supose to run around and shoot like that.More like counter strike. Your accuracy is low when moving, so you got to sit still or duck to be accurate. Which makes sense since you are in a big and wide enviroment. Weapons have varied mechanics. The m4 is my favorite, you just zoom in and tap as fast as you can. Very effective while ducking. Other weapons like the g36 are better for zooming and headshots. Or the p90 for full auto attacks and medium-close range. Also sniper for long range but you gotta prone and press space to hold breath because it shakes alot.

You should get really good with the silenced mp5. It's the best weapon for stealth kills. When you don't care about stealth, the G36 and OICW Prototype are both great.

Yes. I play through it on occasion and still find the graphics and gameplay impressive. One of the best fps IMO.

Far cry I is still good because of the gameplay and story.

*ALERT* *ALERT*

Far cry II however, is not really worth it in my oppinion, could not even complete it, because it felt too repetative (it feels worse than assassins creed I in my arrogant/humble (take ur pick, FACKA!!! :P) oppinion)

One thing I disliked about Far Cry is the mercs having x-ray vision. The trees and foliage plus the huts are window dressing. They don't do much for concealment. Still a good game though.

As for being sniped from far away..... That rocket launcher at the aircraft carrier seemed to have my number the moment I fired a round even from awfully long distances.

Far Cry has its own set of niggles. I'm not overly fond of the checkpoint savegame method either.

Graphicswise, it still holds up:

I thought it kept the game from getting repetitive. Its one of the longest shooters ever made. Human enemies wouldve gotten boring after awhile.

Far Cry is great, it just has this really, really horrible final level that makes me want to rip my hair out, even on normal difficulty.

Though I haven't tried it myself yet, there's supposedly a community patch that fixes this issue. Check this thread (though I think there are newer versions of this patch than the one discussed).

I'm totally with you on that. I think Crysis tries too hard, Far Cry is everything an FPS should be.

It's a great game that offers a sort of B-movie storyline in a good way, has levels that are quite neat, It looks good even today provided you're not a complete graphics whore and it is difficult and only gets harder on when a certain something is revealed.

I loved it. Perhaps it was difficult and long, but the game didn't feel like that for me. It was fun and really just flew by.

So I did buy it, and also did some more patch research and decided on FCAM 1.7. This mod is completely amazing. I'm literally blown away by what it turns the game into graphics-wise ("Oh man! This grass looks amazingOHCRAPGUARDS ALKFJSLDUGSYFE -dies-")

I only played about 30 minutes vanilla, and then maybe 5 with the mod, but I do have to say so far that it's MUCH better than Crysis (the demo at least). The shooting so far feels nice and responsive, and I'm liking the brutality of the difficulty (Hard mode, I reflect, may not be the best idea). For once in a shooter I actually feel like an everyman, instead of, say, Duke Nukem (or that dude from PainKiller). Which is cool once in a while, but doesn't do much for tension.

Now to finish Mirror's Edge first and stave off backlog.

But thanks guys. Without you I may have missed out on what I think will become one of my favourite shooters.

yeah, it's a good mod and worth downloading , its a little short and the enemies are hard as hell to spot most of the time but its still cool.

Also, switch to single shot for better accuracy and so you don't waste ammo. Full auto is only for big fire fights. And just wait until you get the cry vision goggles later in the game. They make you a killing a machine.
