Is Guild Wars 2 worth getting if I'm not especially into MMO's?

I've heard that the game allows for more of a focus on singleplayer and story, and the whole MMO part of it isn't that necessary to enjoy it.

I just thought I'd ask here since I'd like to hear from people who have actually played the game.

It is very soloable. You can easily solo your entire story until the very last part which you need a group for.

Is it worth a singleplayer playthrough? Does the story hold up?

Eh, for a singleplayer game it will keep you engaged, but it's not anything particularly interesting

The story is one of the worst I have ever seen, and the personal story's pacing is off as well. Expect long breaks between each personal story mission around 1 personal story mission per 2 levels.

If you are interested in story I would say that SWTOR does a better job (Imperial Agent had at least a decent storyline), but overall, just play Single Player games. Better gameplay, better story, better pacing.

z3zim4
You wasted 5 years? After 1 year you should have noticed. Also not recommending just because it's an MMO? That's a bit extreme. The game is good and was designed for fun, if you want to play single player then do it and enjoy it(i do), if you want to group up and enjoy just about every quest or heart with friends and as a group then great you'll like it, if you want insane PvP that depends largely on team work well enjoy it's in there as well. I find the game most fun when solo, not just for the story I can't even remember the last time I did some of my personal story, it's a good game and I guess you will like it unless the story is all you want from the game in which game get a different game. Some areas are immensely engrossing, I did an entire zone and only realized that i'd done it after being pointed towards a different zone. It really is a good game and each zone has it's own little story kind of thing like side missions that escalate into a big event. Very fun.

I'd say go for it. The story might not be the best, but for an MMO it's outstanding. Also, those long breaks between story missions, where you were Level 16 and then need to get Level 19 for the next Story Mission, true, but leveling in this game isn't a horrible grindy chore like in all the others, you can level up pretty quickly and absolutely not repetetive from 1 - 80.

Also, every race has it's own 3 beginning stories and variations you can experience as well as branching story parts later in the game, I've played 3 characters there to max. so far and NONE of them has had the same story except from some key missions.

I love the op's question. If you don't like mmo's, don't get it. If you don't like FPSs, don't get Modern Warfare. Etc, etc.

like, 90% of the game can be soloed (definitely all of the open world and story), but the story isn't exactly praise-worthy. still an excellent game, IMO.

It disguises it's "MMO'ness" well in my opinion. I think there is a chance people who don't typically like MMO's may be able to enjoy GW2. I think the majority who do not like this game are MMO players lol.

GW2 was my first MMO and I didn't really like it. I played liek 6 hours of it before stopping. It was my friend's first MMO as well but he has like 500 hours in it and has only had it since January.

Heh, thought this once too.

Well, it's definetly very different from the usual MMO Stuff and it's very good in being different and still fun :) Or maybe exactly because of it.

GW2 story is the kind you would expect from an MMO. If you are only getting the game to play it single player then I would reccomend getting a single player game instead, or at least give KOTOR a try if you havent already since its free.

If your just looking for a single player game than I would say no. I have sunk in 100-200 hours and after that I think i'm done with the game and if your looking for something with a good story, than definitely not. There is nothing to do when you hit 80 besides WvW. or dungeon's, which imo kinda sucked. I just started playing WoW for the first time and it seems like theres so many things to do in compare to GW2. Pets, Mounts, Raids, Dungeons, Gear. One of the things I hated about GW2 was that once you hit 80 all of the gear is basically the same stats just different looks.

If you're getting it for the story, don't.  It's really bad.  No, I mean really bad.

I'm also not sold on the game-play, either.  Try as I might, I just haven't been able to "get into" GW:2 like I thought I would.  It's a game I want to like more than I actually do.  If that makes any sense.  There just seems to be "something" missing from the game.

Not trying to disagree with you (again, lol) but wasn't the story quality based on each race? As in some races have really cool stories and others not so great. I play Asura and the main story is actually pretty cool and funny.

Personal story lacks a bit, but it has it moments. Overall there a lot of stuff you can do solo, but you probably better off looking for SP games then MMOs, since well they shine more  when you're interacting with other players.

That could be.

I've made a few characters but I haven't found any of their stories that impressive.  Then again, they're all low levels so that might have something to do with it, too.  I don't know, I was really expecting more from the game in general.  I really liked Guild Wars and played it on and off for a few years but something about the sequel just isn't grabbing me for whatever reason.

Try ASURA if you want. That's the only race I've really leveled with (I have a lowbie Charr too) and personally I found the personal story a crack up (as in funny). The Asuras are comedians cause they are so cute and ego-centric. Of course, don't expect a best selling novel....it's an MMO after all.... Darn it Wild, now I want to play GW2 again !!!

This. GW2 already ate 2.3k hours of my no life... Don't buy this shit. I'm still playing this crap and asking myself WHY!? There's nothing to do in this game unless you wanna wvw 24/7 and don't listen to those who bring bullshit like "you can spvp, explore world *which is deserted*, do dungeons, fractals, do achievements"... Other than achievements you'll do all of this in less than a month and buying a game to do achievements alone (which reward you with NOTHING) is just  . Every month all anet does is add shit to their gem store and tweak *nerf* skills instead of giving us real pve content (hard mode would be a start but i certainly do NOT wanna to bother with same boring dungeons i've been spamming for 7+ months) and pvp that is almost half as decent as gvg or FA were in gw1. Don';t buy this game is all i can say but u do whatever u want.

Sadly am...

I don't get it.

You're saying that you got more than 2000 hours out of a $60 game and you're complaining?

Some things never cease to amaze me...

EDIT:  you get burned out of EVERY game.  You just need to stop playing for a while and play something else.

I'm playing other stuff (finished infinite like 10 minutes ago). those 2.3k hours aren't exactly all me playing tho... at least 1/3 of it was standing in LA afk while the game runs in background. You may say 2k hours is amazing for 60$ and i agree but this is an MMO and i playing gw1 (which isn't even an mmo) for 5 years without being bored of it but had to quit cuz everyone left it for gw2.

True, but I think GW1 was a different beast in a different era. It came out right at the time when MMOs were taking off for the mass audience...and on top of that it presented itself as FREE, which made everyone go SHOCK! SHOCK! and flock to it. These days, you have 100 MMOs at the market at the same time....so it's easy to move on from one to the next.

I don't even play MMO's so when i tried GW1 in 07 i had no idea sup. The crazy amount of skills available in gw1 is what kept me going for years (also annoying ppl as a mesmer and rupt ranger in pvp lol). In gw2 everyone runs same crap, feel generic and that is what i REALLY don't like.

That's they key right there.  It was all new to you and me and therefore that's why those games back then like WoW and GW1 hold a special place.

I agree with GW2 gear though.  What I love about MMOs most is finding stuff, putting it on and looking cool... but with GW2 it's mostly just buying stuff instead of finding it.

Traditional MMO lovers may hate it, others looking for something off the beaten path may like it more.  You either love it or hate it.  One thing though is that GW2 awards those with large active guilds who have bounds of creativity.  Like my guild's fashion show contest and we handed out prizes:

If you're getting it for the story, don't.  It's really bad.  No, I mean really bad.

I'm also not sold on the game-play, either.  Try as I might, I just haven't been able to "get into" GW:2 like I thought I would.  It's a game I want to like more than I actually do.  If that makes any sense.  There just seems to be "something" missing from the game.

Not trying to disagree with you (again, lol) but wasn't the story quality based on each race? As in some races have really cool stories and others not so great. I play Asura and the main story is actually pretty cool and funny.

That seems to be the general concencious of various boards I visit. Guild Wars 1 being a great game, but something about GW2 just not grabbing them. Personally, I felt that some big problems I had with GW2 is that the pacing is entirely off (in kryta you face nothing but centaurs and bandits for 40 levels  ), lack of resource management, low skill ceiling, pretty much only one build per class, lack of oomph in skills, a boring buff/debuff system and poorly designed encounters. I also would argue that Arenanet wasting manpower and resources on this living story crap and holiday events. Sure, the SAB is fun, inferior to a proper platformer but still fun. However, it doesnt really solve any issues the game has. You know the game's combat is flawed when even the one button SAB has more tolerable combat.

I think it's worth it just to explore the game world. The graphics are pretty to look at, and it's quite fun the first time round. You'll probably get your money's worth of gameplay time even if you don't want to continue the mmo aspect of the game.

The most notable thing about Guild Wars 2 is the ArenaNet took a lot of the problems and sources of frustration in the standard MMO design and fixed them.

1. No burning up time back tracking to turn in quests.

2. No kill stealing - jump in and help, you will get credit for the kill without joining a team

3. No loot stealing - Everyone involved in the fight gets to loot the body on their own. The need/greed bs that spawned so many arguments in WoW and Star Wars is out.

4. No resource node stealing - everyone gets their own copy of the node.

5. No quest goal stealing - It is a pointless waste of time to have a quest goal lock out other players when it is going to unlock a few seconds so ArenaNet tossed it.

6. No primary stats - All stats benefit your character.

7. No inspecting other peoples gear - Another thing that spawns lots of arguments is out.

8. The mindless "end game" grind is out too. Now your characters levels down to the area you are in. This makes the whole game world your "end game" as everything still presents something of a challenge

Where companies like Blizzard and Bioware took the old formula and polished it a little but really changes nothing ArenaNet decided to do better. In an industry stuck on formula and remakes ArenaNet's decision to make their own formula is a good reason to give it a try. If you can approach to with an open mind.

Some people have complained about the story. Since when is a video game story ever been that great. Most are just an excuse for the action. However, the story you see changes based on your characters race and the answers you give to questions during character creation.

Something else to consider... your standard single player game cost $50 to $60 and last on average 20 to 40 hours. That's comes out to $1+ per hour of playtime along with a good chance it doesn't work well or at all. Guild Wars 2 is free to play after paying the initial $60 dollars. It only ends when you say "I'm done". This comes out to pennies per hour of playtime or less. Seeing that this game is their financial life line for the next several years they will do their best to keep it running well.

I generally dislike themepark MMOs - I still dislike WoW personally - GW2 is one of the exceptions I've actually genuinely enjoyed. Just don't expect a strong singleplayer component - next to something like (the woefully padded) SWOTOR (which shouldn't be an MMO quite frankly) - it's a game that is at it's best when playing with friends and bumping into other players during world events and all that jazz. If you want a singleplayer experience, get a singleplayer game.

Guild Wars 2 is a pretty social mmo. I played it under my friends ign and had a bit of fun with my thief but didn't like the story. Honestly, If you want a pretty decent Singleplayer MMO experience I would reccomend SWTOR or The Secret World.

After playing The Secret World alpha, I really wanted to play it, but didn't want to pay a subscription, but now it's a buy one and done. Go for that. The story quests are really interactive and intriguing. SWTOR isn't bad either. I like Star Wars, and enjoyed my bounty hunter playthrough although still haven't quite finished.

I blame the lack of cool looking armor for male characters.  Exception being most heavy armor, especially on charr...I like those
