Without going into the whole "GW is not an MMO" thing, Guild Wars is by the far the easiest online game you could get into. Most of the items that take anytime to acquire are more often cosmetic rather than having stats that would somehow give you an edge. Playing PvE, you can easily hit the level cap within a couple of weeks in Prophecies, and even faster than that in the other two games. If you just want to pvp, you can make a level 20 right off the bat, but I recommend doing some pve as well to unlock skills, items, etc that would take awhile to unlock buying them with faction.

I haven't played in awhile to see if these are available for all games, but there's at least a pvp pack that gives you all skills in pvp that you can purchase from anet for Prophecies, at least.

Anyway, Guild Wars is nothing like WoW or other MMOs where you have to worry about leveling and then playing gear catch up. Even playing casually, you'll get maxed out on levels and have time to work on skills, etc when not pvping.

prophecies has an awesome PvE , but now if u wanna keep up with the game u have to buy at least 2 chapters , cus u will not be able to join PvP parties with skills from one chapter , and even making money from any chapter will demand skills from other chapters , so as I said u will need at least 2 chapters from the sequel. I have propecied only and I cound't play anymore after EotN was out! of cource I was done with the missions.

It's not too late. Bear in mind that Guild Wars is not really a MMORPG although it resembles one in some ways. You will hit the level cap in no time at all and there is no grinding for better gear really, only for different looking gear if you are into that sort of thing. Guild Wars is designed around having balanced PvP and while there is a substantial amount of PvE content, that design philosophy definitely carried over to PvE. I still play Guild Wars, but that's what kind of annoys me about it: They made it a game where you get loot drops of varying rarity, but it's like...the loot doesn't really matter much so why even bother having loot in the game? Unlocking all of the skills on the other hand...that takes quite a while.

Anyway, it's still a fun game. Factions has one of the better casual PvP modes and you can easily hit the level cap of 20 in a day, but unfortunately it also has the weakest campaign by a long shot. Prophecies, what the original game is called now, is a lot more drawn out and really I'd recommend starting there because it just kind of feels more immersive to me. Guild Wars 2 from what little they have said about it sounds like it's going to have a lot more elements of a traditional MMORPG, but Guild Wars is more along the lines of something like a Diablo game where character progression is hardly a factor and you can't really play solo. (You can play with computer controlled allies in lieu of human teammates though.)

Yes do join Guild Wars! while it's not quite as active as it once was in times past, there are still thousands of people that play it, including myself. I've been playing guild wars for about 3 years now and i can tell you, it is a great game. To get the best experience, i advise buying all 3 campaigns and the expansion. This will give you broad range of options such as playing a class that isn't available in one of the other campaigns and also open up ALOT more of the world for you to explore, meaning more people, more quests, and more fun. I believe there is now a trilogy package on sell for $49.99 that you should look into that includes all the campaigns, you'll have to get eye of the north (the expansion) seperately, either in a retail store, or from the in-game store (which is instantly added to your account so you can play it then and there). Anyway, hope you decide to buy it, its worth it.

[PS] Might i add that, contrary to the people who say it, Guild Wars IS an MMORPG. if anyone disagrees then tell me this, what exactil does MMORPG stand for? Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game, which is exactly what guild wars is considering the ammount of people playing. The only reason people say other wise is because the game is instanced, meaning that towns are seperate from the outside world. When you leave a town and head outside to fight monsters, you are given your own private copy of the map to which only you and/or your party are the only player characters present, everything else consists of npcs. While this means that you cannot meet people anywhere like you could in a persistant world (think world of warcraft), it also means that you dont have to worry about interference from other people either, such as someone stealing your items, getting in the way of battle, or killing your targets. Guild Wars reliese heavy on a party based system so its all about getting a group together before leaving the town and heading out to quest or do missions, which is enjoyable though slightly limiting to some aspects (hence the reason some people consider it not an MMO, which is wrong). Also, Guild Wars 2 is not comming out for quite a while and it's nice knowing some background info on what is going on when it does come out. Eye of the north is sort of an introduction into the story element and some of the new playable races that will be available in GW2. Also note that eye of the north has a place called the "Hall of Monuments" that will allow oyu to transfer things over into your GW2 account or unlock special items for GW2, which is a nice feature. GW2 will also reserve all of your character names for use in the sequel (which takes place 250 years after eye of the north, meaning your newly created characters in GW are their ancestor, hence the reservation of the names.)

I've been playing GW for awhile now, and right now is one of the best times to join. With the Compilation (three chapter) pack coming out, and the holdiday season buzz just around the corner.

This game is more of a labor of love, you aren't required to do a massive grind to get the most out of the game, but you can do PVP or PVE to your hearts content, while shifting you character to mission orineted status.

GW is a great game if you're looking for a free MMO. I had a blast on there. I still have my account and I might get back into one day (when GW2 comes out). In the meantime, my account is sitting pretty.

Guild Wars is a great game that does away with many MMORPG conventions (unfortunately the lack of a persistent world does make it feel more like Diablo 2 with cities as chatrooms, but that's not always a bad thing).

Best part? You never have to grind, and you never have to play with other people if you don't want to. Plus, with fast travel and short quests you can easily play in half hour bursts if you desire.

As others have said, Guild Wars is a great game. They just released the Trilogy which is Prophecies/Factions/NightFall for $50, but if you might find it online for $40.

Not late at all, plenty of time.

Take it from a GW veteran get this to start with:

http://www.amazon.com/Guild-Wars-Platinum-Pc/dp/B0013EEJM2/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1221884714&sr=8-5

That includes both the great original game (often called Prophecies) and the expansion Eye of the North which provides you with a good look at hero's and an opportunity for monuments that should provide you with bonuses in GW2 if you get titles.

They are worth it if you want to play hardcore PvP....

Factions has excellent PvP and some good skills on its own, though its not particularly great PvE, Nightfall is better PvE, and has some decent new skills, particularly for Elementalists (Searing Flames, Stoneflesh Aura, are major staple skills for PvP Elems, Healer's Boon for Monks, and u only get them in NF), not to mention you can have an assortment of heroes here as well.

Factions is Asia-themed, Nightfall is Africa-themed

Factions allows you to have Alliance Battles, which is great PvP with big groups of people. It adds 2 new character cl*sses, Assassin and Ritualist.

Nightfall gives you access to the Domain of Anguish (DoA), a VERY popular elite PvE area for looting (certainly in my large guild of about 100 members, we have DoA runs all the time). It adds 2 new cl*sses as well, Dervish and Paragon.

Plenty of people in all campaigns.....join a big and active guild, check out GW official website and join one of the guilds that has won Guild-of-the-week.

Also, this site will be your bible with GW, add it to your favs list:

No it isn't too late. Guild Wars isn't going anywhere for a longtime. The Guild Wars series is great, I've played it since beta and it just keeps getting better.

Bring on GW2! :D

Your character transfers from one to the other. If you start out with Profecies you can have the same toon all the way through the series all 4 games.
