Jesus christ. Are some of you people American by any chance? 6 PCS ON 24/7? Do you REALISE HOW MUCH electricity you're wasting? I find that disgusting. It's no wonder why the yanks are the main cause of global warming...ruuuj
yep, im sorry you americans, but he's got a really good point here

So what if they're running C2Ds? Are you an idiot or something? C2Ds are STILL wasting energy when idle - especially if you're keeping your computer on 24/7. Oh, and what about all of the other components in a PC? Yes, that's right, more energy down the drain I'm afraid. Yup, you said it, America IS the #1 cause of global warming. Yes, other countries are contributing to climate change, but not as severely. After a quick Google search, let's have a look at the facts shall we?
US Contribution in Figures:
- The United States constitutes 4 per cent of the world population
- It is responsible for a quarter of all carbon dioxide emissions - an average of 40,000 pounds of carbon dioxide is released by each US citizen every year - the highest of any country in the world, and more than China, India and Japan combined
- Americans use 50 million tons of paper annually - consuming more than 850 million trees
- There are more than 200 million cars and light trucks on american roads
- According to the Federal Department of Transportation, they use over 200 million gallons of petrol a day
- Motor vehicles account for 56 per cent of all air pollution in The United States
- A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2002 concluded that people living in the most heavily polluted metropolitan areas have a 12 per cent increased risk of dying of lung cancer than people in the least polluted areas
- 32 of the 50 busiest US airports currently have plans to expand operations
- Every year US industries release at least 2.4 billion pounds of chemicals into the atmosphere
-Despite having just 2 per cent of known oil reserves, the US consumes 25 per cent of the world's oil production
- 16 per cent of world oil production goes into american cars alone.
- Approximately 160 million people living in 32 US states live in regions with smog and soot levels considered dangerous to health
- The new clear air interstate rule aims to cut sulphur dioxide by 73 per cent and nitrogen oxide by 61 per cent in the next 10 years
- Around 50 million new cars roll off US assembly lines each year
- There are already more than 20 million four-wheel-drive vehicles on US roads
- More than 1.5 million gallons of oil were spilled into US waters in 2000 alone
- Only 1 per cent of american travel is on public transport, an eighth of that in the UK and an eighteenth of that in Japan
- As much as 5.99 tons of carbon dioxide is emitted per American per year, compared with 0.31 tons per Indian or 0.05 tons per Bangladeshi.
- The US had 16 major oil spills between 1976 and 1989, whereas France suffered six and the UK five
- The average american produces 864kg of municipal waste per year, almost three times the quantity of rubbish produced annually by an Italian
Ouch, doesn't look good eh? I suppose your government is a bit silly when it comes to global warming, but then again, everyone knows that. More to the point though, it greatly pisses me off when you meet people who are totally ignorant of global warming. Ignorance of this reaches an extreme point when you've got someone with 6 PCs switched on 24/7. Are some of you people even aware of the consequences of global warming? It really is not a laughing matter.
Enough, this thread is not about GLOBLE WARMING... Its about whether its ok to leave your computer on 24 hours ever day. The answer is yes its OK.
i shut mine off when i go to sleep anyways because of the noise
generally its a good idea to just put it on standby, saves power the most
i dont do this anymore though because my card overheats for some reason, it has to do with the beta drivers.
Oh god no, please don't say that. The evidence of global warming is OUTSTANDING.ruuuj
Yes, and the Earth is flat and it's the center of the Universe, good grief. And I expect any one who runs multiple PC's 24/7 has a good reason to do it.
There is no problem with leaving a PC on 24/7. My dad leaves his weather PC on 24/7, well tries to, the program he uses goes screwy and he has to restart it at least every 3 days.

Man-made global warming is a myth. If you buy into that you are an absolute loon and you will be proven wrong within the next 10 years.

Yeah really. Lemme go get my buddy and him and me can race my Mustang GT and my G35 for a few hours. Hell when we get back we can laugh at morons buying up "carbon credits". WOW!!!!!! hahaha carbon credits LMFAO!
This isn't the cry about how much you hate americans and how they're going to kill us all through global warming forum.MTBareHow are us the people going to blow up the world? Im not gonna go launch a nuke at someone and neither is any US citizen. People need to stop hating us we are doing nothing wrong.

Lawl wut?
Things you should know - I'm American. I wasn't talking about nukes or anything of the sort. I was talking about global warming. I wasn't suggesting that Americans were going to kill everyone, I was only mocking that one guy.
Oh god no, please don't say that. The evidence of global warming is OUTSTANDING.ruuujJust speaking from some experience here, I know that livestock are a far bigger contributor to CO2 emissions than vehicles have been... I think something on the order of 3x-4x more. Now looking at the numbers you quoted, in America you've got a combination of a) a hell of a lot of farms => livestock producing far more food than we can use, i.e. farm credits and lots of exports b) not very many people for the amount of space.. less than 300 million in one of the largest nations? c) a lot of space = a lot of distance to cover + large car culture = cars are pretty much required to get around = lots of cars being driven Just being logical, I'm guessing that'd give massively skewed numbers when you quote 'per person,' especially compared to a place like India that's nearly the exact opposite in terms of space+animals vs. people. Just driving around in San Jose, I can get on the freeway, start driving in a straight line, and I can still be in San Jose almost 30 miles later. (280S from Cupertino!) As far as leaving the computer on or not goes, it doesn't really harm the components themselves for the most part, as most parts in a computer don't have any moving parts to wear out - you're worried about things degrading over time or, sometimes, the shock of current when turned on or off. Or the constant expand/contract cycle of a computer heating up, cooling down, heating up, cooling down eventually breaking things... (read: 360 RROD!). As sodoffubugger mentioned - hard drives wear out over time (and even then, only wnen in use - but they tend to be), fans wear out over time, and things like LCD's can slowly die over the years. The main bad thing about leaving a computer on all the time is, as mentioned, a huge power draw. It's not really that large compared to other things in the house, but you'll definitely feel the difference.
Why would you want to leave a PC on 24/7 ?
You guys must be so lazy.
dbowman
Because some people download large files while they sleep and do tasks on the system while they are awake. I find myself downloading music/movies a lot and require to keep my PC on overnight. Thank god I have a laptop so I don't overheat my room.

Exactly, among other things. Anyways don't you have a hat to eat, dbowman :P
As stated, some people choose to run distributed computing apps, such as SETI, F@H, and the like on their systems during the time they would normally just be idling in order to crunch away toward something... be it to decrypt signals from space to find life on other planets, or find a cure for cancer, etc. Sony's PS3 firmware has lately added an F@H client, too. In my case, I like to leave my PC on at night for downloading files, and also to be able to listen to streaming radio stations that feature music that none of the AM/FM stations would ever carry. Sleeping with music playing helps me sleep a lot easier and better. Why would you want to leave a PC on 24/7 ?
