Yea, but to my knowledge there are only like three genuine sniper-like rifles...there is a silenced rifle, the SVD Dragunov, and then a rail gun thingy.
Theyre fun, but ultimately take up too much space and there isnt enough ammo. Also, from my experience, you dont get them until the last quarter of the game. I kept looking for sniper rifles early game (my favorite combo in shooters is a shotty, pistol, and sniper rifle) but there were none.
Fortunately the assault rifles get scope attachments that do a decent job out to a few hundred yards.
It's an awesome sniper game. Realistic feedback and very precise. After you get the silenced Vintar you can pretty much play the rest of the game with it without using other weapons. Just gotta invest in ammo.
Just gotta get halfway through the game - but until then youll have fun with automatic weapons.
The upgraded Vintar in the game is one of my all-time favorite fps weapons, along with some from BF2142 and HL2. Although STALKER is ebtter than either of those games.
i remember getting a scope shortly after the town area with the arena (don't recall the name, i'd estimate it's 1/3 in), from there on in i sniped near enough exclusively from then on - there's a few close quarters encounters (mostly indoors), but besides those, you can snipe all the way
stalker works as a sniper game, i don't know i'd say it works well - but it sure works... the biggest problem with the game is that the crosshair has a tendency to skip pixels instead of scrolling smoothly, so precision aiming, even with a scope, can sometimes be extremely awkward as in, you can shoot 1mm to the left of his head, or 1mm to the right of his head, but for some reason you can't line your scope upwith his head - fpsrpg? piffle and sugarsticks, i say!
it may be done in the name of realism (because shooting stuff at distance is not exactly easy irl), but if so, it's a computer game contrivance that is more frustrating than realistic, and removing that feature would probably improve the game
and the ai has that annoying ai tendency to know where you are, even if you're sitting in thick grass... it's not like you can really pick enemies off one at a time, all stealthy like
but that said, the game does give you some pretty open areas and you can snipe most fights - in fact, you'll probably find you snipe nearly exclusively if you tend to play on harder difficulties, it's the only way to stay alive
anyway, all said, stalker works as a sniper game... just not too well - but the game is dirt cheap in uk right now, i bet you could pick it up for like ten bucks... even if it's not so hot a sniper game, s.t.a.l.k.e.r is definitely worth playing
