I've heard rumors that Starcraft is the best RTS ever, even now. However, I own Starcraft, and it may be great old-school gaming, but it's not as good as COH, SupComm, or even possibly Warcraft III. At least I think... what do you Starcraft fans think?

No it's not "the best RTS ever," despite what the horde of blizzards mindless drones would have you believe. It was the king of the hill back in the day though.

I loved it in my heyday, but it hasn't aged gracefully.  I think there are better play mechanics introduced in later games that have a much better look to them.  SupCom, CoH, Generals, Homeworld, Dawn of War.....

It's nowhere near the best RTS, imo.

During at least the first 5 years of Starcraft, it was definatley the best. imo, it still is the best. But many new RTS games have come so far using the gameplay of Starcraft. It set the bar of RTS gaming back in 1998, and still does.

Look at Warcraft III, it is basically a clone of Starcraft's gameplay.

It was when it came out, but that ship has long since sailed.  Anyone who says Starcraft is better than the RTS games of today is kidding themselves.

To me it is simply because i had the most enjoyment playing it, at its time and for years to come it was top dog. Rts are pretty much dead to me now their is no enjoyment in them past two hours because there all the same with minor tweaks. Ive seen the same game-play time and time again, so im no longer interested in them. although by todays standards its not the most advanced or best looking and such. Also before anyone says it I'm not a blizzard fanboy, i just liked star-craft.

lol...Warcraft 3 isn't anything like SC besides the basic RTS elements (ie mining, base management, etc.). Warcraft is using unit skills and spells while SC is massive armies battleing it out. Imo I would say Warcraft 3 is better than SC not b/c it's newer but b/c i like using unit spells.

Actually warcraft 1 and 2 and starcraft have extremely similar gameplay, and starcraft units had the same premise as unit spells/skills, it was not about huge armys battling it out. Warcraft 3 is still similar to warcraft 1&2 and starcraft, and many others; it makes sense since its made by the same company.

Well, yes and no. For example, what game has enough popularity that 10 years down the road, a sequel will be announced and it will be entertained with chants of "GAME OF THE YEAR" and "RELEASE IT NOW!!11!"?

However, I feel (and this is just a feeling), that the crown should be shared between Total Annihilation, CnC: Red Alert, and Starcraft. This feeling is no doubt going to be met with cringing at the coupling of these rivals' names, but each offered something unique and beneficial to the RTS gaming, and fueled one of the most heated debates of greatness over RTSes I've ever seen.

Dawn of War is close, but it seems to be more of a niche game. Granted, it's a big niche; but I've played many RTSes, and Dawn of War, for some reason, just doesn't get it done for me. Maybe I'm one of the few on the outside, but I doubt it...

Im not accuseing all companys of doing that im just stating the fact that they are similar and are made by the same company. it seems a common trend for companys to make games that are in the same genre to have similar traits.

It comes down to personal preference. My all time favourite RTS games are C&C Red Alert and Warcraft II. Simply because i used to play those games religiosly, skirmish and modem games and it brings back so many great memories of battles.

that's exactly why I hate it. Too much mircromanaging is not very fun imo.

  • Self building- Protoss and Undead
  • Suicidal Morph building- Zerg and Night Elf
  • Gold Mine- Vespene Gas Geyser
  • Trees- Mineral Field
  • All of the armor, HP, and attack is the same.

Want me to name more? Cause I could easily name double that.

I've played them both at least 80 hours and know them well

Only to Starcraft fanboys is it the best RTS ever made. You see, with Starcraft, it isn't so much based on strategic battles. It's more based on an economic victory. Y'see, with me, I like actual battles rather than mining for 20 years. Dawn of War ftw...

Hello, DoW fanboy. You say SC isn't heavy on strategic battles? Before I bash your idea I want to know what makes a battle strategic in your opinion.

Also, DoW fanboy, you say you don't want to mine for 20 years, I say I don't want to capture strategic points for 20 years. Why don't you admit that the two resources gathering methods are different but not superior to each other?

I still love this game, I'm playing through the original missions right now. You have to realize that this game is from 1998, of course there have been advancements, but the story is great and it still plays good enough. The multiplayer has an amazing community as well.   Supcom and CoH are better games nowadays, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy SC.

Hello,

Haha, exactly. I'm sure you could name some more, like, you select units with your mouse and then click where you want them to go, or that both have air units. Let's talk about differences, maybe? Heroes, food cap, 4 races instead of 3, upkeep, creeps, shops, items. And FYI, playing "both for 80 hours" isn't really enough to "know them well."

Oh, and edited to add on the subject: I think WC3 is a better game, so no, SC is not the best RTS ever. It is probably the second best, though.

see this is what I hate, Supreme commander (FYI this is the sequal to TA) and even Starcraft borrowed ideas from TA. You can at least argue that Starcraft was as good as TA or what ever its personal choice but how does Blizzard get so much money yet Cave dog couldn't even stay in business? Its bull $hit

Yes, I have. The gameplay is comparable, but the story were 5 times worse and the graphics were horrible even for its time.

are you kidding? TA was beautiful, at least to me. but I guess you just cant beat Star crafts story though imo TA had way better gameplay. Artillery, every shot was calculated and could miss etc, planes actually flew not hover, Sea units, you controlled way more units and were fighting in a battle not a skirmish, and a Giant variety of units.

TA was essentially the first (maybe out of all games) RTS to use the internet in the way that it did.

Its one of the most popular.  I mean, crap!  Korea puts it on Pepsi and Dorito bags!

As for it being the best, thats debatable.  personally I dont think so.

Best and favorite are not the same thing.  Even if Starcraft doesn't quite tickle your balls the right way, it's still the best.

Name one other RTS that has had such a profound effect on society as Starcraft.  While you're at it, name one RTS that has more players active at any given time, even today.

Starcraft is the Counter-Strike of RTSs, whether you like it or not.  I personally enjoy WC3 and SupCom more, but I'm not so naive as to think my opinion is the only factor that makes a good game.

There have been many RTS that have come out that I've enjoyed immensely. Many that I like better to play than Starcraft. But no RTS has come out since Starcraft that I've found to have a better balance between three completely, literally different factions, which also results in some of the best strategic online gameplay.  In this sense, I believe Starcraft is by far the best RTS out there. I also think it's one of the best games to age. It still looks good visually, IMO, as the day it came out. If it came out today, I'd still think it looks pretty well.

And for the record, even though there ARE other RTS I'd probably rather play today, I have yet to play an RTS that I played longer than Starcraft. I played it avidly for about three years straight.

Never mind the story line and voice acting.  Blizzard is gold with this in it's games, and Starcraft was brilliant in that department.

Starcraft if one of my favorite games ever, I don't think it's the best RTS anymore but it used to be, and it used to be for a very long time, and I"ll tell you why...

C&C: Generals - Had superior graphics, but it had bugs all over the place, to big of maps, and the multiplayer was just screwed up all to hell.  The Resolution in Multi was limitied to 800 x 600 and the lag was just horrible.

Total Anihillation - This game I really didn't like, it was just the game play, I could play it for a few hours but over all it just didn't do it for me.. and I really couldn't stand the graphics they looked really bad!  Some people really love this game, in all fairness TA isn't very much like Starcraft, and vice versa.  To really put the two into perspective now a days just look at how much Supreme Com. is like Warcraft 3.  There both RTS's by definition but there actually two totally completly different types of games.

No it isn't the best RTS ever. It's very good, however.

Starcraft would be great-grandchild of all RTS games...the genre was already well settled when Blizzard came along with their Xerox to copy the accomplishments of other companies.

Starcraft was definitely the best RTS of 1998, that's for sure...but for me it's not the best (CoH is the best for me).

Of course, that's entirely subjective. There's no such thing as the best game, but there is such a thing as the most popular game, as someone pointed out in an earlier post...

Of course, some people will say "x million people can't be wrong". on that I can only refer them to January 30, 1933 to prove that x million people CAN be wrong ;-)
