magnax1

Legendary single player with a great story and epic characters with extremely strong personalities that make today's RPGs look like Barbie games in comparison.

Perfectly balanced and extremely deep multiplayer with 3 completely different races that do not share one single mechanic, that brought StarCraft to be hands down the most competitive game to be ever seen with the biggest tournaments still hailing its top players as the most skilled RTSers in the world.

Infinitely replayable game with new strategies being spawned on-the-go for every different match.

Huge selection of custom maps that spawned whole genres outside of it.

It's the only RTS that does not rely on gimmicks to be considered good. It's also set aside because you need to have both mental and physical reflexes to be good at it.

Worth getting? The real question is, why don't you have it yet?

Nope, it came out like a bajillion years ago. And everyone knows games quality go down over the years, get something new man. Like Halo Wars, it's not too old.

You can love Starcraft no matter what. Get it, learn it, play it, you'll have a ton of fun. However, to really appreciate what make Starcraft great, you need to be a professional gamer. No, you don't have to be a Starcraft pro - you can be a pro Poker, Magic, Counterstrike, Street Fighter, whatever... if you competitively game, you'll understand what I'm saying. Starcraft is one of two RTS games that has high-level play. - Starcraft is extremely simple game on the surface (much like Poker) that's utterly deep, mentally engaging and overall just an enjoyable gaming experience in which you're constantly learning, changing and growing as a player. It has this huge high-level play that isn't in any other RTS, and that's made possible by how tight the balance is and how dynamic the overall play environment can be.

Should someone play the first game for story reasons, or is it okay to skip straight to the second game?

Exactly this. I'm new to Starcraft and it's one of the only RTS I can really get into. It's very hard to master but it's really rewarding.

You got it a bit wrong here.

Graphics quality goes down over the years, not gameplay.

its just a stunningly well made game. It does everything that makes rts games good, it provides alot of oppurtunity for strategy, is the perfect pace, the missions are great, and the multiplayer is fantastic.

Balance and perfect blend of micro and macro organization. The game came out ages ago and still is better than majority of rts out there. Although TBH i think SC2 is a more than worthy successor and a lot of the online community is moving on with SC2 which syas a lot as a lot of times the fan base is split, but the overwhelming majority loves SC2.

What is the other one?

The other is Starcraft 2 :)

Cha-ching. I'm sure there are some Warcraft players who might try to make a case, but they're the only ones who even get an ear... and since Starcraft is simpler to pick up and play, it has the eloquence factor. It's like poker, it's deceptively easy to go "okay, I get how this game works"... and that's when pros walk away with all of your money, leaving you going "okay... what'd I miss?".

I have to recommend anyone unfamiliar with Starcraft check out something like Day9 just to get a feel for what we're talking about. Watching experienced players like him comment will give you a feel for what this game is about. Part of the fun is that you can learn high level strategy from these guys, then pick up the game and take that strategy into your own games. There's an episode were he covers this, but basically you don't have to be some 300+ APM Diamond-league pro to have fun with Starcraft, you take good, logical strategy and move forward working with some strong core gameplay, and you'll win (and have fun doing it) all the way through the Gold leagues.
