Anyone know if places like Steam, Impulse or D2D will be having Starcraft2 for sale?
I dont see any other Blizzard games on those sites, all the games I own frmo Blizzard myself are all retail to.
Wondering if Blizzard will go with some Digital Download services for this big release of Starcraft2.

I thought it was common knowledge that it'd be released on Battle.net.

I don't think they will. They will probably make huge sales even if they only release in retail or through their Battle.net online service.

With the new Battle.net, Blizzard made their own Steam-like service, so they will never release their games on other online places.

Why?

What would be the point? You can simply download it off battle.net without the need for any additional software.

I was thinking more other popular places.
They never put there games on other services so I was wondering if they might start for this one.

Why the hell would you ever want to use a service from a company that tries to squeeze every last dollar from you?

Who are you referring to?

Both Steam and B.net2 are doing a great job right now.

Is Bnet actually tying to be an open D2D service or more a download client for Blizzard games? Because lots of games have their own D2D service as well as being released on other D2D platforms.

I've actually got more of a problem with the fragmentation of the DD market. I'm not the world's biggest fan of Steam, but I do use it and very occasionally buy games from it if they are VERY cheap. Apart from GOG.com, I don't buy elsewhere for the simple fact that I have no desire to have my collection fragmented in this way.

The problem is that Valve demands commission per sale just like any brick-and-mortar store, so publishers have an incentive to try and fence their own DD store (hence Battle.net), which means you have dozens of passwords for different providers. I mean, look at the number of providers that exist - XFire, Steam, Impulse, D2D, GamersGate, Gamesload, GOG.com, EA Store, THQ Store, Activision Store, Mastertronic, PopCap...there's no end to it.

I personally stick with just two - GOG.com (my main one) and Steam, and only if I can't get the game from retail, Amazon or eBay.

The point of Battle.net or the point of Battle.net 2.0? Or even Blizzard Store? Because are totally different beast.

I like a lot Battle.net due you don't need to connect to Battle.net in order to play any game -except WoW, obviously-, even if I always play Diablo II LOD or Stracraft or Warcraft III in Battle.net matches.

Battle.net 2.0 on the other hand, well, seems totally different: the connection is mandatory in any online match, and the whole net looks focused in to provide my personal stats to third party enterprises, as Facebook and so. IMO Battle.net 2.0 is worse than the previous incarnation of the system. But Blizzard Store is still fine: works better than EA Store or Steam Store, IMO.

Battle.net the "account" if you would want to call it like that, not the in game client and of course "connection" is mandatory when you play an "online" match, it was mandatory for any Blizzard game (SC, War 3), Facebook has nothing to do with what you said, that is optional and they implemented it for people that care and have friends on FB that might also play the game.

It's their digital distribution system, yes, but this isn't to compete with Steam, or just to give you an extra account that you need to manage on teh internets, it's actually to help the users and eliminate the annoying DVD and other restrictions that are caused by physical objects.

They didn't make battle.net to compete with others, they made it to help their users (jamyskis), nobody forces you to get a digital copy you can get the retail but you will have to register it on your account and that would save you of many problems that come with "retail" it's also a form of "caring" like Valve they take into account the extreme stupidity that really is out there, what if some "intelligent" guy shatters the disc? he will whine everywhere and claim that he deserves a new copy etc, what should they do? simple activate the game online and always get it from there, then they'd have no reason to complain.

Good, I would prefer each developer to have their own network. It sucks when Steam goes down for maintenance and you can't play ANY of your online games because they have to launch through Steam!

On battle.net, if I register the CD keys that I have for all the old blizzard games (which I did) it allows me to download the copies ad infinitum for free.

So you actually can buy the retail copy, register the CD and then just do a digital download and throw the disk out.

Now this I didn't know - guess my perspective of Battle.net is still as a matchmaking service. I had no idea that Blizzard had expanded it to Steam-like proportions. I've actually got Diablo 1 and 2 plus expansions, Warcraft 1, 2 and 3 with all expansions and Starcraft - all in German. Maybe I'll get a chance to play them in English...

Thanks for this tit-bit of info.

Edit: Just registered all my games and it works fine - got Brood War, which I was missing, as a little bonus.

Be careful when you register them, it'll ask you if you want to enable an English EU, NA, etc copy, make sure not to rush it and activate the expansion into another language or something :P.

I've already registered my games as being European versions, and I can still change the language even now. I have Starcraft Anthology downloading in English right now.
