I've actually got more of a problem with the fragmentation of the DD market. I'm not the world's biggest fan of Steam, but I do use it and very occasionally buy games from it if they are VERY cheap. Apart from GOG.com, I don't buy elsewhere for the simple fact that I have no desire to have my collection fragmented in this way.
The problem is that Valve demands commission per sale just like any brick-and-mortar store, so publishers have an incentive to try and fence their own DD store (hence Battle.net), which means you have dozens of passwords for different providers. I mean, look at the number of providers that exist - XFire, Steam, Impulse, D2D, GamersGate, Gamesload, GOG.com, EA Store, THQ Store, Activision Store, Mastertronic, PopCap...there's no end to it.
I personally stick with just two - GOG.com (my main one) and Steam, and only if I can't get the game from retail, Amazon or eBay.
