Is it safe to buy off of steam? Can you play singleplayer games when you are not connected to the Internet. (if you bought it off of steam?)

What if Steam just stops doing what it does? Does that mean you can't play your games that you bought from them? Like if they go down permanently??? Are you just @!%$ out of luck?

Thanks,

SavagesStalker.

Yes, SavagesStalker, if Steam's Servers decide to crash randomly then you cannot access your games, which should mean to access Single-player you must access via Steam to start. (Just like any other game from steam where it opens steam and shows you " Is Loading...") But it is safe by the means of someone hacking you.

Personally, I prefer Direct2Drive since it's just a lot easier, you don't need a program running at all times to play, all you need to do is Download, Install, Activate and Play; forever until you uninstall.

Yes it's safe, and yes you can play SP games if you switch steam to offline mode.

I can assure you that won't happen. Valve is a pretty big company.

Thanks,

Yea, and if they do shut down...then Valve will probably refund your money or something like that

I think Steam is the most awesome thing to happen to the digital purchase of game IMO.

They have great support and you have to use their service to play some of the best games made for PC such as Team Fotress 2 and Half Life 2.

I wouldn't think so. That's a lot of money.

I'm pretty sure you have to be connected to the internet to run any steam game. I think they disabled offline mode for most games.

I thought I remembered having troubles with it, but I have a cable so I rarely have interenet troubles. I thought several source games wouldn't let you play in offline mode.

I found this, if you are interested in playing offline mode

To add a few things.

Basically if you are playing a non-valve game... once the game is up and running the game can run pretty much independant of steam

You can also use offline mode... provided you were online when you decided to put steam in offline mode.

As for security... paypal and credit card are very safe and I had no problems using both. The big thing here is DONT GIVE YOUR PASSWORD TO ANYONE NOT EVEN VALVE... only use it to log into steam. And don't click on links from people you don't know... they could have trojans/loggers on them.

And don't worry about steam/valve going under. Even if they DO (VERY BIG IF).... I think they already have a plan to make sure you can still D/L play the games you rightfully own.

Steam has 15 million users, so I would say it is pretty safe. Never had a problem with them.

Regardless, getting hacked would still be completely the fault of the user - and has no bearing on Steam. It's just Steam has the most to lose. Steam can't do anything about a keylogger.

Generally, I think Steam is magnificent. But I would like to mention an issue I recently had.

Steam will automatically download update files (for the Steam software) but not install them until it restarts. I recently had this happen to me, and that's fine. But I was having issues with my router at the time, too, and my net was down - meaning I had to start in offline mode.

But Steam will not start in offline mode when there's an update pending, but it won't install the update without an active internet connection, either. It's like a one in a million thing I guess but I was unable to get Steam running (at all) until after I got back online, so I had to go a few hours without by Steam library.

Not a huge deal, but potentially a serious issue for some.

Besides that hiccup, I've been using Steam flawlessly for four years. It's awesome and it's as safe as any other internet shop.
