Thinking about buying it. I know it's a 2005 game. Just want to know how much dated they are

The lighting still looks pretty good for the most part. So do the particle effects. Textures are quite dated by today's standards, though.
An odd mix really, The envioments looked dated even when the game released, the models, physics, lighting, and particles look quite well still (to me they look alot better then FEAR 2 somehow)
Its playable without question.
There's really only 3 or 4 maps(levels), the graphics are decent, nothing special, but not bad at all.
Wouldn't say they're that dated.
Treflis
That actually does look dated. The textures and particle effects are quite ugly, as are the character models.
That screen does the game no justice though.

He said "that dated" not "dated." Meaning not THAT dated. Still serviceable even by today's standards.[QUOTE="Mischievity"][QUOTE="Treflis"]

Dated but playable.Nighteg
yeah it still has decent graphics, maybe the water effects are bad by todays standards, but everything else is good, physics are awesome considering its been a while since it was released
FEAR's geometry is kinda primitive but the game overall still looks decent.
The game also does some things that many modern games still don't do such as 3D water and parallax occlusion.
I still think FEAR looks really good. The particle effects, post processing, and lighting still looks awesome. I was very disappointed to play the demo of FEAR 2 and see those effects downgraded from the original game.
Graphics are not the end all to making a great game.

That saying is so cliche these days. Graphics do help give the player a better experience.

But would you honestly avoid playing a game with horrible graphics that is otherwise excellent in every way possible? I think that's his point. As cliche as it may be, it's pretty damn true. Of course, this doesn't mean that developers should forget about graphics and not put any effort into them, either.[QUOTE="JangoWuzHere"]

You can always use ENB mod, even if the game isn't supported. I think FEAR 1 is fine, because levels and art direction were appropriate for what it achieved graphically. For example many people would say this is the case with HL2 where they prefer the old graphics over using a mod like Cinematic Mod 10.94, but the option is there for people that want the game to be more modern in terms of visuals.

True, in certain genres, good graphics are essential to significantly complement the gameplay.[QUOTE="DeViLzzz"]

Not really I still wuv quakelive and I'm all into it.The techinical details, when every thing is maxed out, in the original look much better than any of the newer games. That's because the original was not originally made for the consoles and didn't need to cut corners for the engine to run smoothly on a console.
Frankly, I'm sick of the FEAR series. Monolith is stuck in a rut with it and need to move on.
[QUOTE="Blacklight2"]6 years isn't really that old. The graphics are fine. The game is pretty amazing, though.C_RuleIn the tech world, six years is archaic. Not sure where you have been, but in the game world graphics have advanced very little in the last 6 years. In the old days pc gamers used to have to upgrade every year to play the new games at high settings. Every new generation of GPU's allowed for significant advances in game graphics. Now, not so much. This is mainly because most game compainies are focusing on developing for consoles that are running on technology designed about 6 years ago.

Qixote
Monolith developed FEAR and FEAR 2; they've moved on.
FEAR's two expansions were developed by Timegate Studios; FEAR 3 by Day 1 Studios.

Eww. I wouldn't exactly call that "moving on". Especially for such a big name studio. Before we say "eww," don't you think we should wait and see how it is? Who knows... it could be brilliant. Before we say "eww," don't you think we should wait and see how it is? You are right, maybe the release will be brilliant. But so far to me it looks like it will be "eww".
