So would you say that theres not that big of a difference ? If someone secretly switched my tv to 1080p from 1080i do you think that I would be able to notice the difference ?
if your screen is big yes you will notice the differenceKaY_86
I thought there was a problem with PS3 doing 1080i. I know if you tried to play a game on a 1080i only television the PS3 would downscale to 480p.

I dont understand what you guys are saying. My TV is only 1080i so does that mean it changes to 480p?
Shawty, it is true resolution alone does not change on different sized tv's, but it is a dis-service not mentioning that differences in resolution can only be seen by the human eye based on the size of the screen and how far you sit from it. A 22" 1080p screen can look equivalent to a 60" 1080p, but only if you sit about 2.5 feet from the 22" set and 7' from the 60" set.

then you will only get movies in 1080i and a select few games on ps3 do 1080 i/p. and yes you will be nocked to 480 i/p on 90%of your ps3 games.I dont understand what you guys are saying. Except that the ps3 won't do any rescaling beyond whatever the game's box says it will support. At least with the 360, it can and be opted to output any game you want at 1080i/p even if the box doesn't explicitly say so. There is supposedly a way to "force" the ps3 to upscale 720p to 1080i/p via unchecking 720p as a supported resolution in its video settings, but that also has a caveat, in that if a game doesn't let itself be upscaled, it will be downscaled instead... all the way down to 480i/p as its programming sees fit. For me, that's one of those PITA issues about the ps3 that I just do not like.Every PS3 games supports 1080i/720p, so if you have a 720P/1080i television, you will always be at 720P/1080i.

Even though you can set 360/ps3 to 1080p, if the games are native 720p, they will look best on a native 720p display. Scaling will introduce artifacts.rastanExactly.

Actually, most but the highest-end TV's usually have very poor scalers, which is why many HDTV's fail so terribly when displaying content that was in standard definition being fed into it. This is why upscaling DVD players and HD/BD players generally were much favored for the standard def DVD movies. The scalers in these devices generally can better rescale it so that, even if not perfect, it generally looks a damn sight better than depending on the TV to do it for you. And the scaler chip in the 360 for (re)scaled output is admittedly quite good in the 360. What doesn't make sense to me, is that even as capable as the RSX is in the ps3, Sony doesn't seem willing to allow it to rescale it as need be.It doesnt really matter in the end anyway. Really, you shouldnt be looking at upscalling stuf if you dont have to as you should always try to play in native resolution, plus the fact, anything thats getting fed to the TV, will always be at the TV's native resolution anyway (unless the source on the TV has borders around it). People think the scalling of everything to 1080p on the Xbox 360 is great, when if you have a 1080p TV, then it would be getting upscaled regardless.
shawty1984
Yes, this works fine for images and videos, but it seems that they are handled differently regarding games. On the 360, it can (re)scale any game up to 1080p with at least Component Video Cables, and everything (including protected HD-DVD with the add-on drive) when using HDMI. With the PS3, it can only do 1080p for bluray on HDMI. But it seems insistent on refusing to upscale games beyond whatever the game box says. Both consoles upscale much lower res images to fit the resolution of the TV during games I think. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Correct me if I'm wrong. your wrong. ps3 only does 1080i/p on a very select few games and order to get 1080 on those games you have to uncheck 720p. on other games you have to go back in check 720p or else you get knocked down to 480. so if a tv only supports 1080i he will only be able to play a select few in hd. think i had 5 or 6 ps3 games at one point and only warhawk would let me use 1080p. so i just gave up and kept 720p checked and if i kept that checked even warhawk came up 720 p even though i still had 1080p checked. bunch a hassle to be honest. some thing im shocked sony hasnt fixed yet....[QUOTE="monson21502"][QUOTE="KHAndAnime"] This is a big pile of misinformation.
