First there was Everquest. Then there was WoW. I played quite a bit of EQ, but that's long dead, and I never played WoW, but seeing as the games been out 7-8 years, it seems a bit late to get into it now. Is the next big MMORPG in the works? And I don't mean "Rift," I mean the kind that's so good that hundreds of thousands of ppl are playing it online at any given time.

SWTOR is trying like hell to be that game, whether or not it'll succeed only time will tell. Other than that, not really. There are a few F2P games who's got a good following but nothing even close to the popularity of EQ and WoW. Except SWTOR - but again, its so new that its impossible to judge.

If i were to make a guess myself, i would guess that GW2 is gonna be the next big thing, but the release date isnt anytime soon.

On a sidenote, despite the fact that i HATE what WoW has become, it might still be the thing for you. They're releasing a new expansion (can't remember when, but within 2012) and so the current population won't likely decrease. As far as i know WoW is still the most played MMO, and due to the lack of proper contenders i believe its still gonna be the biggest MMO for at least a year or two. (Again, unless SWTOR succeeds) And don't worry about lack of people, last time i checked WoW had 6+ servers with FULL population.

No one can tell yet. But Guild Wars 2 looks very promising.

SWTOR did incredibly well at launch, if it keeps up the momentum it could become the next WoW/EQ. Unfortunately, it looks to be yet another Age of Conan/Warhammer Online/AION going by all the doom and gloom I hear.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is definitely the only credible WoW contender at the moment and right now the only other game in development that looks to have similar potential is Guild Wars 2.

I think a lot of developers have given up trying to go head on against WoW and are instead making smaller niche products that appeal to a different kind of audience.

Titan will be the next big thing (Blizz's next MMO), as for WoW, it's not too late to get into at all, if you like what you saw, maybe played, no reason not to go for it.

In the words of TotalBiscuit (Youtube Celebrity) WoW will never be killed by an opposing game, there are too many fanboys loyal to that MMO, and it's just too big now, I think if it gets into its 7th expansion, with extremely unbalanced classes and glitches, it will still have a moderate playerbase or raiders and PVPers, but here is not the discussion for that. SWTOR is an extremely fun game, but I think it will end up like Rift, or Everquest, a player base, but a small one at that. If not it'll just die. I was sucked into WoW for 3 years and I don't want MMOs to rule my life any more, so a casual MMO is obviously the best choice. If not, I think you should just stray away from MMOs, go with a RTS or League of Legends

Diablo 3 isn't a real MMORPG, because it isn't one big realm, right? I posted about it, want to see if people who played the beta version think it's fun.

I'd say up next would be Guild Wars 2 and maybe even The Secret World. Right now it's SWTOR it seems to be pretty popular.

Ahhh yes! Forgot about The Secret World. I'm actually more excited about that than Guild Wars 2, and I've been waiting for GW2 for a long damn time.

Nope, it's Blizzard, not some company that I have to doubt, I absolutely loved any game they made, no matter what it'll be, it will be huge.

Same. Everything from them has been quality. It's hard to not like a Blizzard game. :D

Idd it does, the constant patching, updating, and releasing of expansions makes the graphics more than just endurable, but still IT IS an 8 year old game.

Besides the games mentioned already, I'm quite interested to see how TERA turns out. Oh and by the way just try WoW out if it looks fun... there is no reason not to. That it's 8 years old means nothing, so much has changed since that.

Unnecessary, the game is created by Blizzard, the most powerful and influential game developer on the planet who created the gold-standard game in THREE separate genres. No other developer can claim that. Titan will become huge simply because it's made by Blizzard and if they shut-down the WoW servers when it launches it'll probably control 2/3 of the entire MMO market, just like WoW does now.

I had actually heard (rumor, yes) Titan will be a MMOFPS more like Planetside than WoW. And if that does turn out to be the case, it will not infringe on WoW's playerbase at all.

True, Titan would be in a different sub-genre but it will most likely not be released until 2014 at the earliest. By then, WoW will be a decade old and I believe Blizzard said they were planning on shutting WoW down by then correct? Does or has any developer hosted two MMOs simultaneously?

Blizz isn't planning on shutting down anything, they plan on supporting it for "decades" if the players are still there. As for Titan, at least on the server I'm playing (Ragnaros) everyone and I mean, everyone, is looking forward to Titan.

Blizzard could release their own WoW-clone and it wouldn't ruin World of Warcraft. WoW will still go on as long as Blizzard supports it with content. The thought of anything killing WoW, or Blizzard's very own game killing their own makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Indeed, they could release a new MMO called World of Starcraft: Kerrigan's Tampon and people would wait outside stores in droves for a midnight release.
