Yes, it is mandatory on ALL cpus... they all need to be cooled

Not all thermal grease is created equal, look for some reviews if you are planning on installing some. Arctic Silver 5 is generally considered a good benchmark.

Unless you're a severe overclocker, there's no need to buy Arctic Silver, as modern heatsinks come with a thermal pad on the bottom.

True but in my experience they dry quickly and Arctic Silver 5 is designed to be stable for a very long time which might mean less hassle down the road.

The best thermal paste on the market now, it's the MX-2 and last longer.

The best thermal paste on the market now, it's the MX-2 and last longer.

OCZ Freeze is generally regarded as being superior (although I find it harder to work with due to its consistency, and Coolaborotory's Liquid Pro is probably the ultimate thermal compound, but definitely not for the faint of heart. I use MX-2 myself, but that's because it's non-conductive, easy to work with, and easily within 1-2c of the best compounds out there.
