In terms of gameplay, and are the graphics really outdated? Or are they at least bareable?

The graphics are outdated, but the gameplay is still amazing. If you are going to play it, look for the patches that make the first two games run in widescreen and DirectX9. :DRyuRanVII
There's a widescreen/DX9 patch?! Good thing I just got my Complete Collection copy last month. I'm currently working on my last final and now I can't concentrate!!! :x

there's a rapidshare link to a zip file i am now about to try. have had thief installed for months now but sort of forgot about it till this thread reignited my interest :)
Thief is, how do you say? Timeless? Graphics are of no importance with gameplay that close to perfect.
However, if visuals do matter, you can always pick up Thief 3...the graphics are pretty good in that one
Gameplay wise it didn't age at all, altough that's mostly because nobody ever attempted to move the genre forward after Thief 2 debuted. However, whatever the reason THief 1 and 2 ares still unbeatable when it comes to stealth gameplay.
Thief 3 offers better graphics, but weaker gameplay unfortunately. You might also try DarkMod... it's a mod that turns Doom3 into a platform for fan-made missions, it has Thief 3-like graphics, but without the limitations of UE2.0 engine
A classic can never become outdated. Sure, the graphics show its age (show me a 12 year old game that doesn't). But the gameplay and sound are still extraordinary. It's funny seeing everyone talk about the graphics but not sound. Any real Thief fan knows that sound was the best technical ingredient in the games. Turn out the lights, crank up the volume, and be prepared to lose yourself in one of the most atmospheric games ever made.
I still play fan missions that are still being made for the game. Some of them have managed to improve the graphics so much so that you forget it is based on a 12 year old game engine.
The gameplaymechanics, the flow of the game, and map designs are timeless... It is what you basicly call a good game.
it suffers from the same series of flaws as System shock 2 and Deus ex 2, namely they are graficly outdated.
To most of us that really is not a problem at all, but to (usually the younger crowd) it is a barrier they can not overcome.
Me? Id say get them, they are some seriously good games, and psrt of the epitome of stealth games.
