Is this really and RPG?

So i have been playing a Golf game with RPG elements. Its a fun game but I have noticed some things that gave me an idea for a thread. See they are marketing it as a MMORPG. http://shotonline.gpotato.com

The only reason they can even remotely call it an RPG is because there is an EXP bar, variable player stats, and a currency. but the most you play with at one time is 3 other players. There is no role playing what so ever, the only role you play is as a golfer. No story etc. So RPG seems like a stretch

How can they call this a MMO when the most people you see in the game is in the lobby sitting waiting for their fatigue to wear down. And thats still only a hundred people tops

But anyways, What do you guys consider an MMORPG? What other games just don't fit the description?

Technically any game where you create your own unique persona, or avatar, or sprite what have you... and then play a role is a role playing game. Hence, if you make your own character and then play the role of a golfer online, which you seem to be doing, it's an online role playing game. At least that is how I see it.

Now from what you have said I wouldn't consider it an MMORPG, because when I think of MMORPG in a golf setting I think I would see everyone else on the server playing the same course as me on that course. However, for practical reasons that isn't very plausable due to all the problems it would create. But I agree with you on the MMORPG thing, it is a stretch. Is this Shot Online by any chance, or one of those other asian online golf games? Over there it seems that any game that is online they call an MMO...

Funny...Im downloading the client and ran into this thread...lol...I play Pangya which is a golfing mmo...and technically its multiplayer and your in the role of a golfer raising your levels to get the uber items and rare ones so in an essence it is an mmorpg....its just not night elves with a +6 katana of destruction in the middle of feywood......

btw is shot online any good cuz as i said im downloading it to see if its better then pangya....

its way more realistic. There are items but it is much more subtle I like it better than Pangya
