Ivy Bridge to support 4k resolution

Not sure if this has been posted yet (I didn't see it!), but Intel's new Ivy Bridge processors can output resolutions up to 4096x4096. Discuss.

That's interesting, but I doubt many of us will make use of the on-die GPU anyways.

Yeah, I would never use integrated graphics, but it's interesting because I think it indicates that we're going to see much higher resolutions pretty soon.

not much point seeing as we dont really have any consumer 4k moniters or tv's yet. Hopefully it is a sign of whats to come but im sure companies will milk it like non other like they did with hd and now 3d...

The latest hdmi spec supports 4k resolution, so hopefully the next cards will too.

The real question is can it actually do anything at that resolution. A Radeon 6450 can support 2560x1600; that doesn't mean you should expect to be able to do anything amazing with it.

hmm seeing as how a single 6570 (a $50 card)can drive eyefinity that is 3 monitors with a resolution over 6K, this isn't so impressive

What we really need, and have been waiting for several years - monitors that can support higher resolutions. We already have graphics cards capable of far more than 1080p, yet as that is the "common" highest resolution, few manufacturers offer screens with higher res, and those that do (Dell Ultrasharp) command a much higher price.Avenger1324

WellWe have just started seeing developers actually start trying to optimize pc games, for a while there, we had crappy optimization, and trying to game at anything over 1080p would hender the performance even more.

Now that developers have actually started caring about optimization, it is more of a viable option, that being said 1080p is fine for a few more years still.
