I bought the Orange Box when it was first released and like most people blew through Episode Two and started going hard at TF2. I had played a few levels of Portal but didn't really get into it. When I started reading that it was an incredible game I jumped back into it and plowed through the rest of it - amazed at the gameplay and excellent bits of dialogue. Tonight I just felt like going at it again and reinstalled it on Steam and just finished it again, in a hair over 2 hours.

This game was definitely my game of '07 and its great to go back again and relieve the glorious Glados moments. If people STILL somehow haven't played this game they really owe it to themselves to play through it. I can't wait to see what else Valve has in store with Portal and how some of the gameplay could be used for Episode 3.

I think most people don't beat portal because it's really hard the first time though. I've beaten it three times and all of the advanced maps. But the first time I played most of the puzzles I solved not know what I did. I just got mad and started firing portal every which way I somehow the puzzzle would solve its self.

It wasn't hard at all... A couple of them got me thinking but not to the point of frustration or anger. It is a brilliant game that I really ought to devote more time to. I haven't done all the advanced/extra maps. I've tried a few but I just can't do them :)

When it comes to video games, I'm not the brightest star in the constellation. I had trouble in many parts figuring out what exactly I needed to do, let alone executing it. Even in HL2, I have trouble with the physics puzzles, and figuring out how to get a door open, or something along those lines.

One spot, as I recall, involved a two panels at a 45 degree angle from a wall. I had already portaled myself past a barrier about ten feet high, and behind that barrier up high was a cannon firing those energy balls. Next to that cannon was the receptor that needed to be powered. Using those panels and a portal I had to redirect the energy ball to the receptor....I couldn't figure it out. So what I ended up doing was portaling it so that it hit the wall in a random direction and then began bouncing everywhere....including hitting the receptor.

To be honest, I didn't really see what the fuss was about. It was a simple puzzle game with some nice dialogue. But nothing revolutionary, as there were many prior puzzle games with a similarly exotic theme.

How many puzzle games used portals, had excellent dialogue, solid grapics and a perfect challenge like Portal did?

"Revolutionary" isn't exactly the word-choice I was intending, more along the lines of "GOTY". Just having an innovative concept doesn't automatically make the game. I'm not saying the game was bad, it was excellent. I just thought the praise was a bit bombastic and it was made out to be more than what it really was.
