With my new card, there is not much a framerate jump from my old 7600GS.

I'm only getting about 20-25fps in most games, though about 60 on the DMC4 DX10 demo, 10 on Crysis maxed

P4 3.06GHZ OC'd to 3.6GHZ

1.5 GB DDR RAM

1280X1024

4870 max OC in CCC

catalyst 8.7

That P4 is a huge bottleneck.

You're getting 10fps in Crysis? Ouch. But yeah, you definitely need more RAM.

Well, if you're okay with playing just about every game except Crysis or Supreme Commander then, it's a fine setup. But reconsider upgrading, as in, building a new rig. Keep the graphics card and PSU for the new build. I'd have to agree with Musclesforcier, the P4 is holding you back.

You decided to put a brand new $300 video card with an ancient processor...?

Where--how--why did you think that was going to be a smart move? It's even worse then when AMD fanboys were mixing 3800 X2's with 8800 GTX's.

Go save up some cash and get an Intel Core 2 Duo, P45 motherboard and at least 2GB's of DDR2 RAM.

I'm planning on building a system in the fall. I already have a new video card and PSU. I upgraded to those now to hold me over. My current PC was more of an emergency purchase when i got, old pc stopped working bought the best deal that week, bought the video card the next week. This time I'm putting a lot more effort into it. Probably Nehalem.

Actually, I've spent exactly twice as much on the PC than it costs. 2 cards + RAM + 2 360 controllers (broke the 1st) + Portable HD + PSU + Monitor + Router = $900 PC= $450

Nehalem won't be out till the start of 2009, IIRC.

If you have the cash and patience, wait for Nehalem. If not, build a new PC. Most of the great games like Crysis Warhead, Spore, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, Dawn of War 2, as well as multiplatforms like Fallout 3 (just to name a few) wont be coming out till later anyways. Patience is a virtue so it's really up to you bro. :)

The high end nehalem should be releasing on Q4 ($750-1500).

The mainstream part is releasing on 2009

I will do the same. Nehalem will be ours. Besides, I have my Xbox 360 and PS3 to hold me over. Gears of War 2, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, Far Cry 2, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, Too Human, need I say more? :P :D We're going to be okay. I think it will be worth the wait. Once we get our hands on Nehalem, we'll get to whoop Crysis with STYLE. :D

He should be fine playing Supreme Commander, I used to max SupCom with my 3.4GHz Prescott and 1GB of ram on my X1900XT. Just an observation though. Also in RTS games the framerate doesn't matter as much, and yes, late game SupCom does get very slow, but he should be able to play it very well, especially if it's running Hyper Threading (which it may or may not have).

Max out Supreme Commander? Wow, that's great news. I kinda shunned SupCom because people were saying it's such a PC hog. Sweet, I'll go buy it now. :D Thanks!

Just loaded up BioShock for the first time since upgrading. It looked great in DX9, but in DX10 it reaches a whole new level of refinement. The water is incredible, the smoke/fog/light shafts are way better than in DX9, as well as all the little touches made really add to the experience. Well, that and I'm playing at a higher resolution than I could have before I can't wait to play it again.
