For those of you gamers out there that have or know someone with the kings quest collection, DO YOU REALLY NEED A PENTIUM III PROCESSOR TO RUN THE GAME?

I was going to get it for my brother but i saw the requeiments and his comp apparenly fast enough to run the game which i find very hard to believe. Because I used to play kings quest VI on my old 486, so i have no idea y the requirments are so high.

can someone shed some light on this for me or can you have a slower processor and be able to run it?

thanx

The kings quest collection is made up of like 9 games, one being made in like 1980 and the last in like 1990 or something.

obviously a 1999 game can't be played on a 486

There is a reason: The games run emulated in DOSBox. That means you need 3-4 times the processing power to run them, as every DOS command has to be translated into Windows-useable code. Yes, you DO need a Pentium 3, if not higher. A pentium 4 @2.6 ghz can run any DOS game in DOSBox just fine; slower than that, and the more power hungry games slow down.

Good choice in games though; You can't go wrong with King's Quest!

minimum requirements for king's quest 7 (1994):

486/25 or better with 8 MB RAM
DOS 5.0 or newer, or Windows 3.1 or newer
SVGA 256-color graphics
Sound card with DAC
2X CD ROM drive
5 MB hard disk space

not sure what makes the requirements for the collection higher.

Note: KQ8 is not included in the King's Quest collection if I remember right, not that you'll miss it.

I believe they did not put it in as it is not really a DOS game, and as such would not run in DOSBox, which means they would actually have to port it.

TC: Please Read--all questions are answered.

Just so you know, the original (and by original, I mean the MS-DOS executables from the 90s) games are on the collection. So, if you wanted, you could use the collection on a real DOS machine. However, to run in Windows, you need the emulator, which increases the needed processing power.

Undestandable. KQ does cause people to do crazy things. Do you need any further explanation?

The reason is pretty simple. All of the Sierra "Quest" series that came out last year require DX9c or greater. DX9c requires SP2 in XP or higher and that requires a PIII. Therefore all the Quest series require a PIII or higher. It's not that the game code has really been changed. It's that it was designed to run native in Windows instead of using a emulator like DOSbox that a user might not understand. Instead they can all be run right from the desktop like any modern game and use modern direct x sound. Thats pretty much the case here.
