Keyboard and mouse allows for precision aiming. Using your thumb alone however slightly restricts your aiming (and you also have less space to move on an analogue stick). You may be more accustomed to using a controller but keyboard and mouse is significantly superior. If you dedicate some time to practising with keyboard and mouse (if you play Black Ops you could probably use Combat Simulator) then you'll see much better results once you're used to coordinating your movement on one hand and aiming on the other. I'd also argue that ergonomically a keyboard and mouse feels better (especially the keyboard), instead of clamping your hands around the controller and having a very confined space to work with they keyboard allows you to just rest your palm and the size of your "controller" is much larger.
