Star Wars: The Old Republic, according to the developers, is going to be an MMO with story. With the success of Bioware creating excellent RPGs, we are expecting a massive game.

But do you think this is the game for fans of KOTOR 1 (BIOWARE) and KOTOR 2 (OBSIDIAN)?

Could the developers (if The Old Republic lets them) also have a future project for a single player experience in form of a KOTOR "3"?

That probably won't happen, as the developers of SWTOR have stated. SWTOR is going to be like a KotOR 3, 4, 5, 6, etc. I would have loved a KotOR 3, but SWTOR looks amazing, so IMO it's a good alternative.

This is pure hype built by Bioware. It's ridiculous to call TOR that. It simply and plainly won't have the narrative depth the original KOTORs presented, which was one of the primary reasons why they were so good. It's almost insulting to say that TOR is worth multiple KOTORs.

Likewise, what you've said is also purely conjecture and until TOR comes out, we won't really know.

They might be able to pull off what they are hyping but regardless, TOR looks like its shaping out to be a pretty good MMO.

KOTOR 3 is more likely to happen, since TOR probably won't last as long as WOW, or be half as successful.

What possible reason do you have to think Warcraft 4 wont happen? People probably said the same thing about SC2 or Diablo 3. This is blizzard we are talking about. Both SC2 and D3 ended up being 12+ years between sequels.

But, i do agree. I dont think KOTOR 3 will happen. Not with the MMO in the works. Bioware has come out and said what others in this thread said....that TOR acts as several sequels to the KOTOR games.

StarCraft and Diablo dont have an MMO monster pissing all over the lore. Warcraft 4 will never happen.

only reason i see that tor wont be as successful is because it wont be simple like wow...you will have choices and branching paths etc etc and people gfs and little 8 year olds would rather grind wow......not saying wows bad or anything i love it

I would love to see KOTOR 3, but I really doubt it will happen.

ToR still looks great though, as long as it gets enough people and manages to keep them it should be ok.

I know I'm probably misinterpreting you, but you make it sound like they can't play WoW just because they are girls / girlfriends ( I dont have a problem with the 8 year old thing :P ). WoW is just awesome accessible yet deep which is where its 12million have come from. Well that's why in my opinion anyway. The choices will be good too, giving even MORE replay value when people inevitably max their chars. in a week :P

I agree with you, I would have liked a sequel for KOTOR 1 and 2 as a single player experience. The Old Republic is going (and it is so far looking) to a be a massive game for them to state that it will be 3, 4, 5...... We will have to see how it turns out. The fact that it is an MMO has the advantage of attracting gamers who like multiplayer. But aside from great combat and open environment and classes, will it give the fill of a deep single player story and experience that will also attract players of of the original?

They have already said the following:

1. THE OLD REPUBLIC will have enough content to be KOTOR 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

2. You can do a good portion of the game in singleplayer on yoru own anyways, so I dont see it being to differnt from KOTOR, just with others around.

I am not a big MMO fan (only really enjoeyd Ultima Online out of the 12 MMOs ive tried), but Bioware has never made a bad game imo and I dont expect them to start with this game.

At first I was like NO NOT A MMO for KOTOR! But now I am pretty stoked on it, the story telling is suppose to be the best yet for a MMO.

It WILL happen when EA pulls the plug on the MMO aspect of the game as I have said MANY times here before. Bioware has planned for this and it will be a seamless transition.

its a mmorpg, the only way they can keep people playing it for months or even years is making the game full of useless tasks, story can only last so much, so either expect to watch the story in the first 20h of the game, or get 5 mins of story every 20h of game.

Yes, and then you get patches and expansions which "expand" the story forwards.

It comes from his knowledge from over a year ago(check his post date). I've played about 12 hours of the game but was the weekend so i couldn't play too much of it but i wanted to, enjoyed the story and the fact my character has a voice, it just felt so different just by having that one little addition and improved the game ten-fold over current MMOs for me at least.

I don't hate Bioware but still agree with him. Bioware is just a former shadow of itself, I put my fate into Obsidian, small time devs and indiedevs to deliver decent to excellent RPGs. Scores and hype mean very little to me, Age of Decadence is more exciting than Swtor and Mass effect 3 put together.

Let Bioware do the MMOs and give the single player games to some other developer, who actually makes RPGs... CD Project? Could be interesting to see what those guys would do with a major franchise.

I'd like to see them give it to Obsidian again. I know there are some that think they are not competent enough to release a polished game, but I sure hell would like to play a GOOD rpg.

I think SWTOR will easily be the next couple of KOTOR games atleast for me (and I am a big fan of the first KOTOR game, second was ok too). Some are just butt-hurt cause they didn't get the exact game they wanted. I was a little disappointed at first when I heard the news as well. But now I am more excited than ever, and glad that it is an MMO over a strictly single player game.

I always wanted to play KOTOR with friends, and now is my chance!

Sure there are a lot of MMOs out there, but no where near the amount of single player games, for those who want a single player experience, you have a plethora to choose from. For those that want a good MMO experience, the options are far smaller, especially if you are one (like me) who is sick of the Fantasy/middle-earth setting that plagues most MMOs.

I was a big fan of both KotOR's and a bit disappointed once I heard about the MMO myself. Also after hearing about what happened with Revan and the Exile, but I really enjoyed the beta, so character assassination of the previous two PC's won't make me dismiss the game for good.

To be honest I would expect that anyone that had an idea for KotOR 3 would immediately be asked to put it to good use in SWTOR at least for the forseeable future. Only if SWTOR completely bombs would I expect them to go back and think about making a single player OR game again.

You kneed to read the book "Revan" by Drew Karpyshyn. Its essentially a lead in to The Old Republic story line. Essentially, SWOTOR is KOTOR 3. It picks up the storyline. All the book does is explain why it takes so long for the Sith to return.

Any chance of getting a quick summary? It's gonna be impossible for me to read a book in 4 days. I don't even remember what happened to Revan at the end of KOTOR2.

In KOTOR 2 not so much, he was mentioned by Kreia, but the story focused around the Exile. As for the revan novel, open thet spoiler tags at your own risk.
Bothered by dreams Revan goes on a journey and leaves his newly pregnant wife. Eventually he discovers the sith emperor. Scourge gets a vision stating he will be killed later on by a jedi, thinking that this refers to the exile he stabs her, killing the exile. This happens while Darth Revan gets frozen in a Cryo after being electrocuted to submission by the emperor. The exile's spirit refuses to join the force and helps revan resist the mind draining from the emperor. While frozen Revan feeds the emperor with lies and doubt, causing him to prolong the Sith invasion.
