I have a Samsung 46" HDTV. And I have Sony Laptop with HDMI output. I am not sure if a laptop support 1080p on its own screen; however, would it support 1080p (1920x1080) on the TV through HDMI? For example, if a movie is in 1080p would it output it to 1080p on the tv? Please help.

Yes, make sure you use extend display or just the TV, if you use clone it will be limited by the laptop's screen

It should work fine. My netbook does only 1024x600 on its 10.1" LCD screen. But, if I hook it up to a PC monitor or HDTV, it can do 1080p.
