Some of those games I NEVER beat. No matter how hard I tried.

I used to think that they were only hard because I was young and I didn't get it. But when I go back and play some of them now...they're still hard. Commander Keen 3 still frustrates me.

Makes games now look like a piece of cake, eh?

Yeah those games make Gears of War in Insane, Company of Heroes in Expert and F.E.A.R. in Extreme look easy! Although I feel F.E.A.R. easy... Extreme is pretty good and I have no problems at all playing it like that even with no use of the slow-motion at all.

Crystal Caves

OWNaggio

Wow, I think you're the first person I've ever seen mention Crystal Caves on these boards. It's always been one of my favorite games of all time, hence the sig.

Oh wow.

That is by far the most awesome sig I have ever seen.

I am speechless otherwise.

Go Mylo Steamwitz!

That game was so bad-ass. I loved those missions where you could change the gravity around. And Prey thinks it's so original with the dynamic gravity thing...ha! Beat Crystal Caves!

About the difficulty, the infocom games I mentioned above also had the pay-by-hint phone number, but even cooler was the "InvisiClues" books they sold. They had questions, then spaces for three answers, which wouldn't show up until you used the special "magic" marker to reveal them. The first answer was usually very cryptic and wise-ass, the second a little more helpful, and the third was the actual, explicit answer. I was never able to beat any of those games without the clues, even if I HAD read the book (I was a huge Hitchhiker's Guide fan, but that game was just too hard without the invisiclues). If you look on ebay there's a handful of the books for sale. The only brand new and sealed one is going for about $75!

ah here you go, more info if you're curious or old and nostalgic like me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InvisiClues

I remember playing Carmen Sandiego on my computer, and every time you passed a few cases you got promoted. The catch though, was that in order to go on, you had to type in a certain word from the manual. They'd ask you something like, "What is the seventh word on the fourth paragraph on page 135?" Since I was borrowing the game from a friend, I never had the manual, so I could never ascend to the higher ranks. Always pissed me off as a kid.

Alley Cat was one of the first PC games for me.
