I've been using a Logitech MX700 for many years now and it has been an excellent mouse. Fits my hand nicely and I love all the extra buttons. Unfortunately, as with my previous MX700 the docking station is failing to charge, and while I'm tempted to get another MX700 I'm looking at some other alternatives.

Firstly is the MX518 essentially the same mouse, but a wired version? From the pics I've found it looks almost identical, so would be a good easy replacement.

What other mice in the Logitech range would anyone here recommend?

I use it for gaming as well as general use, and given the amount of time I use it, money isn't an issue, though I might put the limit at £100. I do like the shape of the mx700, and heavy mice are fine (I know some of the newer models can be adjusted for this). I'm undecided between wired or wireless, having initially loved the freedom of wireless, but have had 2 mice each fail after about 2 years.

So please let me know what your recommendations are :)

I have the Logitech MX Revolution and love it. The Hyper-Scroll wheel is such a logical evolution of the standard scroll wheel I'm surprised it took as long as it did for someone to think of it. Now that I have it I don't think I could go back to a standard scroll wheel. Basically, instead of a click-type wheel it free spins so you can zip up and down documents or web pages really fast. Once you get the hang of it you can navigate very easily. You can also change between free spin and standard click-type by clicking down on the wheel. The SetPoint software can be set to default to either one or the other or automatically change back and forth between the two depending on what application you're using. The battery life is excellent as well. I charged it the first time when I bought it a week or so ago and after playing a lot of Titan Quest (mouse heavy game) over the holiday weekend the battery is still going strong. It lasts much longer than the MX1000 laser mouse it replaced.

I tend to stay away from wireless devices, the reason you mentioned being one of many.

There are only two mice on the market I'd consider right now: The Logitech G9 and the Razer Death Adder. I've got fairly small hands though, and larger-grip mice like the MX518/G5 are uncomfortable for me. Or possibly the Roccat Kone, but availability isn't great in the US.

The Logitech G5, G7, and G9 are all excellent.

I purchased a second G5 not too long ago (the second revision; I love the changes made) ..best mouse I've ever owned. Can't quite bring myself to go wireless for my mouse/keyboard.

If you want wireless, the G7 is the wireless version of the G5 ..both of which are similar to the MX518 aesthetically and in terms of comfort. The difference is they use a laser for tracking, rather than an optical engine. (I'll, for one, will never go back to optical.)

I have the MX518. I chose it over the similar Laser models mostly for aesthetic reasons, I hate the blue on the G5. The G9 to me seemed uncomfortable and overpriced, so I didn't bother with it (there's nowhere that I can check it out close to where I live).

So far I'm very pleased with the MX518, it's the fastest mouse I've ever used and it's extremely comfortable.

Switching back to wired does seem sensible.

I had a disaster with a cheap unbranded wireless desktop set that came free with a PC about 5 years ago, which is when I switched to the Logitech Wireless Desktop MX, which included the MX700 wireless mouse. The keyboard has been excellent, and is on only its second set of batteries (regular not rechargeable) after all that time :) It used a single wireless receiver/charging station for the signal from both the keyboard and mouse, so when it stopped charging I had to have 2 receivers on the desk which isn't ideal.

Thanks for the suggestions

The MX518 and G5/G7 look a very similar shape to what I'm currently using, so I wouldn't need to find one in a shop to check how it feels. Is there really much difference in laser over optical? Or is it like telling someone that HDTV is better than SDTV - the best way to prove it is to see it yourself?

The MX Revolution looks interesting, though with a second scroll wheel on the side for the thumb I would have to try that out in a shop first. I can see where hyper scrolling would come in handy, though I'm guessing it takes a bit of getting used to.

The G9 looks smaller than the other mice, but maybe that is just the picture. It talks about two different grips that you can attach, but while I don't have huge hands they don't really go well with small mice.

I did try a Razer mouse, but it was a few years back. I remember them having very high precision, but also being very lightweight, especially compared to the MX700 with the added weight of two AA batteries inside.

I have an MX Revolution and I like it a lot, but... The second scroll wheel is not a true scroll it does not allow for turnning all the way around only a half turn. I bought the mouse because I liked that it was wireless and that cool microgear thing. Though to tell you the truth I almost never use in it the free spin mode, it just does not work well in games. The mouse has a lot of buttons on it more then most other mice. 9 buttons if I remember correctly...
