According to the official site

"A BioShock PC Demo IS coming. We tried as hard as humanly possible to get it out to you guys simultaneously with the 360 demo, but we needed to make sure that it was perfect -- that all drivers were ready, and that the game looked great on a huge variety of computers.

Currently, the PC demo in its final stages of testing and approval. We are pushing to get it out to you as soon as possible. It will be out during the month of August, and everyone is working at full capacity to deliver it to you before the game hits store shelves on August 21st. I will also let you know as soon as I have an exact date for the demo's release, so please stay tuned.

I cannot express enough how sorry I am for the wait. Thank you for understanding and your patience. Just remember -- only eight days left till you get your hands on the full game.

I'll let you know where to get the demo as soon as it becomes available."

Just goes to show a lot of angry worded emails and forum posts with good grammar will make people take you seriously over the internet :P

Only thing is i find it a bit pointless a demo being released when its so close to the final product's release. But still i'm happy they are releasing a demo, this game looks pretty awesome and hopefully they wont delay it....

They probably had to make sure that people wouldn't be able to access the console and play around with weapons/enemies/plasmids that aren't supposed to be in the demo.

That's my guess, anyway.

This had nothing to do with MS.

To release a 360 game, it needs to be approved by MS in advance, which is why the game was completed earlier and a demo put out faster. Since they didnt need to do that for the PC version, they used the extra time to finetune the game even further, thus resulting in this delay for the demo. This is all from Mr. Ken Levine himself.

Trust me, you don't need a demo. After playing the demo on the 360, this game looks to easily meet, if not surpass, the hype.

Now THAT is awesome public relations. Any other company wouldnt bother with an apology imo. Good for them, they realised they messed up and imo attoned for it. All I can ask is that we the PC gaming community accept their apology and be mature about it. They didnt have to make a PC demo, they didnt have to apologize, and they didnt have to submit to a petition for a collector's edition...but they did. Good for them!

I agree, it's good for a company to respond so quickly to the public's opinion. That being said, I never really cared about a demo in the first place, it being so close to launch at all. That being said, I thank them for their attempts to get a PC demo out as soon as possible.

I will only accept their apology when they release the demo. Thats how they should have done it: say "you know, we messed up. And to settle things up, here's the demo". Bioshock is coming out in about a week, so why only give an apology and say "you know what? theres still 8 days to release the game, so keep waiting for the demo!!".

The apology was a good move, but they should have apologized with the demo on their hands ready to be released...

As most of the poster already stated, a demo at this point is unnecessary, I'll just wait for the game's release.firefly026

I don't get what's unessessary about trying a demo before spending $60 and then having the game run poorly.

Ya, demos are always good...annd for a lot of my games I wished I tried the demo before buying (ArmA to name one such game).

Not to mention a demo ANY time, at least for me, is acceptable since I wait until the price drops to 39.99 instead of 49.99. Doesnt take too long anyway, usually a month or so.

........ Uhh I dont even see why they should apologize.. Firstly they weren't even promising a demo what so ever, so we should be thankful.. Secondly the fact that a PC demo is far harder to dev over a console demo is not their faults what so ever. Certainly seems every one these days is a spoiled child that will not listen to reason when its not in their favor.

Canadians have higher taxes. GST (Goods and Service Tax) and the provincial taxes make the costs of everything but food higher in Canada (I lived in Canada for 8 yars so I know).

I don't know much but what about the North-American free-trade agreement? And it's $60+tax http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Free_Trade_Agreement

Right now games cost about $69 including tax and some console games that are priced at $70 cost about $80 with tax :(

Mexico, United States and Canada still have all their own taxes. Perhaps that is why prices differ.

I thought it was justifiable. If they had put a reason and a definite date, it would have been fine. but no demo this close to release generally sends some wrong signals and I guess few of our fellow pc gamers got angry about this.

Maybe the reason was because they were more focused on getting the whole game done instead of taking the time to create a piece of the game that ran on it's own in a demo state that was stable enough people wouldn't complain. (Wow that's a long sentence.

I don't see any need for them to apologize as they didn't do anything wrong. I think PC gamers that complained should be apologizing to them for acting like spoiled brats. "But daddy I want it now"....

It's not like creating a demo is taking the completed game and just copy and pasting a section of the code and calling it good. Well actually it is kinda like that if you want to hear complaints about how much the demo sucked. That said, them doing a demo is just extra work they could have avoided and just put out a stellar final product.

My two cents. Demo's are not a right they are a privilege. To complain about the fact a company doesn't provide a demo is really 5th grade material.

For this game I will not need a demo to tell me that i need to buy it. But still companies should provide a game if it cares about customers. Many people may just need the demo to test how game works on their system. So, it should be a integral part of a game imo. but this a different thing

if they have provided 360 owners with the demo, i guess there is no reason to deny pc gamers. if you see some time back they were all gaga that they a pc gaming comapany at heart etc etc, so people got angry when no pc demo was announced. Secondly people must be concerned that as it is so closed to release and no demo was out, may give the indication that pc version could be delayed. also, if it was any another game people would not have been so upset, but this is a special game.

who needs a demo now :P, 7 days left before the official release ( I hope they don't delay that as well....).3abden
EXACTLY Edit: Okay, a demo might be useful to iron out whether it plays on your system, but if they are this late in the game and they can't get out a demo that makes a good benchmark? How are they going to deliver this thing on time with the advertised system specs? I sincerely hope this isn't like Dark Messiah demo, which ran flawlessly on my comp, only to find out I had to tweak the settings for an hour to make the REST of the game even playable. I also hope it's not like the Lost Planet demo, which completely precluded me from buying that game.

[QUOTE="rgsniper1"]

To complain about the fact a company doesn't provide a demo is really 5th grade material.

naval

But since no one here including myself actually knows it could be any number of scenarios that played out. Here's a what if that could very well be true.

"hey guys, lets make a game for PC and 360 called bioshock"...

Start both projects.

18 months later.

"Um, the 360 version is done here guys. What's the holdup on the pc version?".

"it's far more complicated and indepth due to the open architecture of the pc, lots and lots more testing and driver input is needed".

"well, we really want to please our customers so I don't want this to come out after the 360 version. Tell you what for the 360 team since you're done why don't you work on a demo. For the PC version I need you guys to work extra hard to get this done by the promised deadline. If you have extra time work on a demo as well."

Launch date nears.. PC gamers. "wahhhh we demand a demo, we deserve a demo. We'll boycott if the 360 people get a demo and we don't."

Sounds like they were giving info. And owning a business that programs small business applications I'm well aware that almost all jobs run up to the deadline. Why would this be any different. For that matter, name practically any game that comes out ahead of deadline.

Bottom line is this.

They said they will launch the game with the 360 right? If that's so then what's the big deal. The time they told you they needed is the time they are taking. Hence why they said it in the first place. So the 360 version got done ahead of time and they threw in a demo. How are we to be mad at them again?

Oh right... because we deserve whatever we think we want. As for stating how will people know how it will run on there machine.

Well I don't know why it's not widely accepted but here's the truth. You could always wait for the demo to come out and then see. You don't need to be first in line on launch day if you're concerned about it's performance and don't feel like you have enough information to make a sound desicion on purchasing it. You could wait a few days and read some reviews and get communtiy reactions to your concerns.

But....I know the moment it hits the shelf it has to be consumed by gamers and there is no alternative to that. Anything less than getting it and running home and popping it in your pc is unacceptable and therefor the developer should be punished.

Here's the requirments to help you make your desicion, put out before the games release I might add:

Minimum Requirements

CPU - Pentium 4 2.4GHz Single Core processor
System RAM - 1GB
Video Card - Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 128MB RAM (NVIDIA 6600 or better/ATI X1300 or better, excluding ATI X1550).
Sound Card - 100% direct X 9.0c compatible sound card
Hard disc space - 8GB free space

Recommended Requirements
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo processor
System RAM - 2GB
Video card - DX9 - Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 512MB RAM (NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT or better) / DX10 - NVIDIA GeForce 8600 or better
Sound Card - Sound Blaster X-Fi series (Optimized for use with Creative Labs EAX ADVANCED HD 4.0 or EAX ADVANCED HD 5.0 compatible sound cards)

do you really think matching requirement works? for high-mid end it does, but not always for the low end case.lots of people like to play the game at launch.

Also, you are getting my point wrong. I don't want any apology . Infact I found it funny they appologize when they had no reason to ( see the lol at the begining of the topic). but they should have given some definite information on the pc demo like its progressing fine etc. first they didn't say anything and afterward they gave a vague answer 'later this month' . if they had said what they said now in the first without any apology, i don't think anyone would have made any ruckus.

TO my knownledge they never even promised a demo to BEGIN with.. So I would be thankful.. And if the demo doesn't comeout before the game is released, tough..Must I point out that every top dev out there hardly ever gives a dead line? So in the end this is still crying about something that is certainly not required by a company.. If people do not like it don't buy it, its far better and more productive then complaining.

I'll let you know where to get the demo as soon as it becomes available."

http://www.2kgames.com/cultofrapture/home.html

Looks like the pc fanboys made lots of ruckus at the official forums. :). So atleast its before the game is released

achilles614

We sure did.

I wouldn't be proud of what happened. All the whining and moaning the pc gamers did was immature and stupid.

The same goes for Console fanboys who made threads and derailed threads with "hahaha no demo for PC" bs.

And why do pc games cost $60 CAD in canada when it's $50 USD in USA? I just did a conversion and it should be $53CAD. www.xe.com

Canadians have higher taxes. GST (Goods and Service Tax) and the provincial taxes make the costs of everything but food higher in Canada (I lived in Canada for 8 yars so I know).

I don't know much but what about the North-American free-trade agreement? At it's $60+tax http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Free_Trade_Agreement

Right now games cost about $69 including tax and some console games that are priced at $70 cost about $80 with tax :(

Mexico, United States and Canada still have all their own taxes. Perhaps that is why prices differ.

The different currencies are also not the same value meaning different price for products in those countries.

Well you have two kids, you don't promise to give them candies, but you gave one of them a candy. you cannot say to the other 'see i didn't promise you anythhing. ( it know this example is too lame and obscure, but couldn't resist :) )

Idunno, that seems like an awful big difference to me as well.

Shipping? Tariffs and Taxes? Idunno.

Taxes mostly, as well as currency difference... the taxes in Canada are pretty stifling on everything. Which is why those on the border of America invade every weekend for milk, gas, and cigarettes.
