Gearbox Confuse Me

So here's a thing, and it's honestly got me confused. Gearbox's Steve Gibson has been talking to the London Games Festival blog about the various Gearbox projects (but mainly about Duke), and when talking about Steam he says…

[R]ight now if a guy buys a game on Games for Windows and a guy buys a game on Steam – they can't play together. If another guy bought it in a retail store, he can't play with the first two guys.

Right now we're like "Please, work together" Our big concern right now is that these silos are being built. Everybody's separating out and it's really… as a developer who just wants gamers to be able to play games together, it's frustrating right now. Things like that are hurting the PC industry for gamers.

Eh? That… what.

yea I am not so sure about that...I thought Games for Windows and Steam were simply tools used to distribute game online, and community resources. Once youre in the game, I thought they all operated the same whether retail, Steam, or Games for Windows.

This guy is definitely misinformed on how pc gaming distribution works. I can easily still play my Steam-bought BC2 copy with someone who bought it retail or D2D or from the EA store because outside of patching and installation, the games use the same online service and thus, don't exactly depend on each other to work. It is different if the game requires Steamworks or GFWL to play online though.

Borderlands was watered-down console garbage, and there's no reason to get excited over DNF.

lol despite Games for Windows Live and steamworks all being competitors they're actually quite compatible with each other. Just look at Warhammer Dawn of War 2, it uses Steamworks for DRM and GFWL for multiplayer.

Steve Gibson is in charge of marketing at Gearbox. I don't think he has anything to do with how they make games...

Yeah that's what I thought, but he's either part of the team deciding how the multiplayer is implemented or he's directly reporting the feedback he's been getting from the team that is. I suppose it's some of both since he says "We".

Steve Gibson should not be allowed to talk to people. Let Randy Pitchford do all the talking for Gearbox.

The guy may be an idiot, but I respect Gearbox for developing Opposing Force and Borderlands; they are good games.

Apparently he wasn't talking about multiplayer being non-compatible across different services. He clarified later he was referring to things like "friends lists" i.e you can't talk to your GFWL friends if you are on steam and vice versa (oddly enough you can't talk to your friends on PSN if you are on XBL either, hm services provided by different companies are kinda like that) :-

indeed, friends lists being cross compatible is a key component.

what i was talking to that press guy in london about was the hope that things would just go towards an open standard (not likely)Steve Gibson

Personally I think he was back tracking, the original quote did not say a single damn thing about "friends lists" and the guys ignorance embarrassed him.

That's a remarkable uninformed statement to put out there from someone in the gaming industry, even if he is in marketing. =P

Randy Pitchford probably threatened his job :P

But then again, as much as I like the guy, he was sort of going anti-Steam however many months ago.

Steve Gibson used to do news for Shacknews, I'm not sure he would be that clueless about how the system works on the PC. Good news is Randy Pitchfork will revolutionize this industry. He did it with flanking in Brothers in Arms and he will do it again with whiteboards in DNF.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that's cynical about the One-Trick-Pony that was Brothers in Arms. Its Fire and Maneuver system was interesting, but to make it the one and only feature of an entire game just shows a complete lack of creativity. Not to mention it got old pretty quick.

There's actaully gamers that didn't like Borderlands? Didn't see that comming? Every PC gamer I know loves the game! Even my brother that normaly just play more serious FPS's like CoD, Tom Clancy's FPS's and S.T.A.L.K.E.R loves Borderlands!

I am a old PC Gamer and hate "consolites" as much as the next PC gamer, but Borderlands was great fun! Bit watered down (say, compared to Deus Ex or System Shock), but I just don't think Gearbox ever intended it to be rich or complex? I think Borderlands is just awesome the way it is...

... and a good reason why I think they will do a perfect job with Duke as well. Really now, Duke Nukem 3D wasn't exactly deep and meaningfull with many layers of gameplay mechanics either! Duke 3D can also be called "watered-down", that's what made it so much fun! I think Gearbox is the only Dev at the moment that would actaully do a good job with DNF... I hope.

And unlike MOST "bad console ports" (thinking GTA4, Alpha Protocol, and many more), Borderlands ran perfectly and played wonderfully on my PC straight out of the box.

Yeah, it sucks. I've been wanting to play BC2 with friends forever now, but they got their games at Best Buy, and I picked mine up at Wal-Mart. Worst mistake of my life.
