ive looked at the dell xps and alienware mainly because ive heard really good things about both, but i just started branching out to for example sager and vigor, and it seems they just leave dell and alienware in the dust with 8gigs of ram etc. does anyone know of other brands that compare?!

thanx guys!

fist 5k is overkill, if not a waste to spend on a gaming laptop as you will not be esaily able to upgrade later down the line... im talking about both hardware and with things such as drivers (looking at Nvidia mobile drivers)

if for some reason your still drawn to it- http://www.alienware.com/products/area-51-m17x-notebook.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-AREA51M17X&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT

I'm guessing you don't want to build your own desktop? If not, sager seems like a good place. I don't get how you can have sli and a quad core in a laptop (I would think major heating issues), but they do that. Try customizing one of their laptops. I customized a laptop with Core 2 Duo 3.16 GHz, 4 GB Ram (you could do 8GB but that would be overkill), and dual 9800MGT 512MB in sli mode (or you could get a 9800M GTX 1 GB for 130 dollars less. I also added a 500GB hardrive and that came out to be a bit under 3000 dollars.

Why not just buy a $2000 gaming PC that will outperform any laptop... and a normal ~$1000 laptop if you need one for school/work... $3000 and a better deal...?

im going to be moving around alot so i cant get a desktop....kinda sucks because it would be a by far better buy. i heard that with the dell xps you can upgrade the graphic card pretty easily, do you know of any laptops that are also somewhat future proof?

x2. a lightweight, long battery laptop is so much better. Best advice i could give. I got a ASUS gaming notebook about a year ago and hate having to lug it to class. better yet- go get a netbook and spend the rest on a desktop.

yea it does plus having a desktop in a small dorm would also suck that and im sure someone would steal it no doubt in my mind, if im drunk it would be hard to remember to go back and check if its still there lol, you can also overclock the dell but if you cant upgrade the graphic card than im kinda SOL, does anyone know about anything coming out in 2009? maybe i could just hold out if i knew somethin way better was coming out

well no "gaming" laptop is very portable. you'd be better off to get a small laptop that can game and is still a laptop not a desktop in a laptop shell

you speak sense, but maybe he could spend a bit more on the peripphicals if he's got 5k to spend, a large monitor can always make a great TV then add a blu ray drive and TV tuner to the desktop, maybe get them for the laptop too and a nice pair of headphones then he'ld have a portable HD movie and tv viewer as well as being able to play the odd game

my cousin goes to university but can only afford a desktop which is actually quite lucky as laptops are constantly stolen but a desktop is stollen know more than a TV or a hifi

Do you mean you move every day or somin, it's not that hard to move a desktop if you choose a midi tower especially an alluminium one, or you could get a lan box which is specifically designed for high power and small size. A lan box is slightly restricing but it's perfectly upgradable and uses standard desktop parts so you can buy a big case and a new motherboard when you settle down then just swap your parts into the new case and you have a fully upgradeable and modable desktop.

Its a lot easier to steal and later sell a laptop than a desktop.

High-end laptops weigh upwards of 15 pounds and typically have less than one hour of battery life. If you're looking for something that you can actually take with you places, don't expect to pay $5,000 for it.

Also, on the subject of upgradibility, you'll be able to upgrade the memory and perhaps the processor in a high-end notebook. You can't upgrade the graphics unless you take and angle-grinder to the heatsink, though.
