I currently have a GTX 285, and while it gets the job done the majority of the time there are games I'm unable to play on full and want to upgrade. Thing is I'm not very technically adept. I can install hardware, update drivers, etc, but don't know things like if my motherboard would accept it or if a better card would be somehow bottlenecked by my RAM type or CPU infrastructure (someone told me this might happen with anything more powerful). Here's my Dxdiag:

I'm looking to get a card that'll last me until I do a full upgrade. I originally had a GT 8800. My budget is $2-300, $400 max. Is it even worth upgrading, and if so what would be a good choice? Thanks for the help!

A GTX 580 will fill the bill if your power supply can take it. Your present 285 wants 550W, and the 580 wants 600W, and the 580 will need an 8-pin power connector in addition to the 6-pin. The two cards are the same size. Your CPU and GPU are about at the same level right now. The GTX 580 will probably be held back sometimes by the CPU, but that won't hurt anything---you'll still see a performance increase. Grin and bear it until you can ditch the Dell.

i wouldnt bother buying a new video card. you need a full upgrade, the cpu isn't powerful enough to give u much benefit in getting a new video card... the 285gtx is a very good card, and u need more cpu power for a better video card.

Anything more than a 560ti/6950 would be over the top.

You need to check your PSU.

If you're feeling brave an overclock on that CPU could make a big difference.

^This, obviousley u wanna get the best price per performance u can but the bottleneck wont be significant enough to not be worth it. IDK about prices but 580 is a good card and ur psu can pretty much support any single gpu card.

Thanks for the input. I figured as much that it'd be better to wait. As long as I can play Diablo III I'll be happy for now.

get a custom copu fan and overclocker your card. the gtx 285 is still a beast. q6600 will overclock like a cpu posessed

You can max Diablo 3 at 1080p with ~60fps http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/diablo-iii-performance-benchmark,review-32439-5.html

hey man i recently upgraded my pc, and i gotta say your making the mistake i did a few months ago, thinking just upgrading gpu will be ok, but really i upgraded from a 8800GT to a GTX 460 and saw hardly any performance/fps increase, its because the cpu bottleneck, and you pretty much need a new system, if your on the cheap AMD phenom II is still good (upgraded from AMD 6400+ AM2 to AM3 Phenom II x5 965 3.4ghz quad for $100 on ebay) and the difference is night and day! my computer runs so much faster and smoother, and my cpu is able to keep up with the games

His Core2Quad is a lot faster than your old dual core athlon so his bottleneck will be far smaller than yours.

I'd suggest getting a new CPU too (but you'd need a new motherboard aswell)... Q6600 would bottleneck if you get a better GPU. You could reduce it a little by overclocking it, AFAIK, Q6600 is a great overclocker.

like others have said, you can gain more performance in games by buying a new cpu.

an overclocked 2500k with a gtx 285 will max most games quite easily i expect.

a gtx560 with a q6600 wouldnt.

Yes but if he were to upgrade to a gtx 500 or 600 series there is a bottleneck, he is only lucky it wasnt as big as mine
