So my last hard-drive is quickly kicking the bucket and I'm afraid my pc drive might kick sometime too so I'm looking for a new one. Problem is I'm not very knowledgeable in HDs and I would like to avoid failure-prone models and brands. I want a 1TB hard drive, plenty of space to last me a long time (as long as it survives), and would like some info on what the best brands are and what models I should avoid. Are 3,5'' HDs more "resilient"? I've read that larger capacity drives tend to fail more often. What do you guys think of the Western Digital My Book Essential 1 TB USB 3.0? I was looking at that one.

I have the 2TB version of that exact drive. I'd recommend it. So far it's still working beautifully and it's pretty darn fast (if you have USB 3.0 ports on your computer). It's also very silent (if you care about hard drive noise) and the price is right, $99.99. I'd say get it!

Thank you for your response. I must say, I was expecting many more :s Regarding that model, I've seen many reports of people having the drive fail after a little time of use, regarding errors with the connectors mainly. I would like a few more opinions really...

Hard drives aren't that good for long term back up as they fail often unless you are going to mirror them

I'm not sure anything at all is good for long term backup really. And in my previous post, failing after a little use means failing after a few (very few) months.

tbh I've never had a harddrive fail on me and trust me I have a lot of them (ex & internal) tc, I have a My Book Studio II (2TB) which is still going strong after I think 2 years now and I also have a My Book Live (1tb) which also still works great after I think about a year... I think that all 'My books' use Caviar green harddrives so I'd say go for it

Personally I'm going the route where I buy an external HDD enclosure separate and then buying an "internal" 3.5in drive to put in it. That way you aren't stuck with whatever drive the manufacturer shoves in their external enclosures.

I have a Western Digital Elements, it's not got any of the crap on it that the My Book comes with either, it's simply a Hard Drive in a case and mine hasn't skipped a beat since I bought it 2 years ago. Great brand I'll say.

Yeah I've had this 1TB LaCie hard drive for several years now as well. Still going strong. I had second of the same drive next to it but that one crapped out just recently, which I why I bought the 1TB Western Digital My Book.
