I know it is rather odd, but I honestly love games with stories that have a depressing mood about them. Games with stories that revolve around murder, loss, fear, or heafty moral choices.

Some games that I enjoyed that fall under what I am looking for:

Condemned
BioShock
Amnesia
Silent Hill (Series)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (Series)
L.A. Noire
Max Payne 1 & 2
Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners Of The Earth
Penumbra (Series)

While I am primarily looking for PC games, games on GameCube, PS2, PS3, or any handheld system will be fine as well. I am fine with all genres.

You might like Fear. Also, another game that comes to mind is The Path. It's supposed to be rather weird and disturbing. But I haven't had the chance to play it myself yet.

Clive Barker's Undying System Shock 1 & 2 Quake (not much of a story but definitely fits the theme) Farenheit (exactly what you're looking for)

I've been looking up the games as you guys have been posting them, and so far, I'll be picking up The Path and Cryostasis on Steam. Going to look around and see where I can get Undying, System Shock 1&2, and Fahrenheit. Fahrenheit really does look exactly like what I am looking for.

As for Demon's/Dark Souls, I already own both :P Great games.

Well Dead Space sure has a ... disturbing story ... not much moral choice to be made since it's a linear playthrough but if you're looking for a dark atmosphere and stuff that may be a good answer ...

P.S. Was gonna say Amnesia: the dark descent but I see you've already played through it ...

EDIT: Project Indigo (or Fahrenheit as some call it) really isn't that much of a moral choice since either you play the game like you should (in a moral good way) or around half way through you'll end up with a game over non-stop since the scene or whatever happens that follows up screws up your err ... sanity meter ? Word of advice - high possibility after 70% of the game that you'll stop playing it since the game atmosphere goes Matrix ... so you may end up just wasting cash, but then again the game is pretty cheap ... ugh, I'm contradicting myself, ain't I ?

This. TC, you should definitely pick up Dead Space 1 and 2. They're usually on sale (most of the times), and I'm pretty sure you could end up grabbing both games for $10-15 (total for both games). Definitely dark, disturbing, atmospheric and at times, morbid.

It's actually not that bad a game, it just has faults and was unfinished. And I'd rather play Hellgate London than Dead Space which is just basic bog standard aim and shoot gameplay, just sayin'.

Make sure to stop playing the game 3/4ths of the way through. It was brilliant up to that point and then it all went downhill from there to absurdity. It's as if they outsourced the job to a bunch of 5 year old kids who have an infatuation with DBZ/Transformers and (of course) no clue what romance is.

Both the path and the void are pretty dark, only completed one path on... the path (weird game) and haven't finished the void yet but it has a dark atmosphere about it. Should check them out.

It was bad. Like you said, it was unfinished and full of flaws. It was also one of the biggest failures of the gaming industry and a major flop. Last time I checked, Dead Space series was not. Just sayin'. My point was, Hellgate London doesn't fall into any of the descriptions the TC was inquiring about. If by "dark" you mean the cool CGI movies, then that's quite deceptive.

This is the backstory for HEllgate London...

According to legend, when the ravens depart the Tower of London, it will crumble to rubble and disaster will befall England. As man became more dependent on science, believing only in what he could define or create, ancient knowledge and rituals were lost to the antiquity of time. Prophecies that had stood as warning for untold generations were seen as archaic folly or ignorant superstition; so when the harbingers of evil began to manifest, few saw and fewer believed.

When the demons finally came, there was little that stood in their way.

Emerging from the swirling chaotic Hellgate, they overwhelmed humanity's defenses quickly and systematically. Even the nuclear and biological weaponry employed by a few desperate nations did little more than slow the apocalypse. The nature of the demons' attack presented little in the way of strategic military targets to the generals of mankind's armies. With no obvious headquarters to bombard, visible supply lines to cut, or known leaders to assassinate, the usual tactics of war were useless.

Only those that still practiced the holy, ancient, and arcane rights could stand against the dark invaders, using weapons and spells forged in the traditions of their forefathers. Their successes were scattered, and the leaders of the great military forces could neither understand nor accept their strange ways. This mystical resistance drew the immediate attention of the immensely powerful creatures, seemingly immune to the weapons of mankind. Soon, those that had preserved the knowledge of how to combat the demons shifted their focus from driving them back into the twisting nether to saving as many of their fellow humans as they could. They retreated to the relative sanctuary of the London Underground, a haven whose construction they had orchestrated decades before.

Now, the once great city lies in ruins. A massive, sinister gash in the fabric of our reality swirls and churns, dominating the horizon as it blends into a permanently darkened sky. The Invasion, the unspeakable cataclysm that befell London, eventually engulfed humanity. The powerful nations of man were eradicated, and the decades-long process called The Burn – the transformation of our world into theirs – had begun.

But mankind is a race of survivors. Men and women hide in the shadows of their former dominance, struggling to survive, yearning to strike back at their conquerors. These survivors banded together, and they are learning.

Learning how to travel undetected.

Learning how to forge weapons capable of piercing unfathomable defenses.

Learning how to harness the forgotten and arcane powers of magic.

Learning how to kill demons and close the Hellgate...

You're trying to tell me this does not fit into the discription of the title thread "dark, morbid, and disturbing stories". Come on man seriously, if there's one thing Hellgate is rated for its the story which is better than 90% of video games and certainly better than Dead Space by a massive margin.

Wikipedia

RECEPTION

Positive aspects of the game commented on by reviewers include its story, described as "not totally original" but "still very much enjoyable",[28]and the overall look of the game

And since when is a metacritic score of 70% considered "bad"? It's certainly not the best game on the planet but it's more than playable (I enjoyed it more than Dead Space). It's also Free and the multiplayer is working with many players online.

I also have to comment that nothing you have said in this thread has made any sense as to why HellGate should be discredited from being mentioned in this thread. The OP asked for a dark morbid story. Hellgate has that, there for it deserves being mentioned. End of story GG, your opinion does not matter.

Dead Space would be a good place to start. I would also have to say MGS4 was a bit distrubing to me. Just that whole war torn world and all the soliders scfeaming as their dying, getting killed right in front of you, and the back story of the B&B corps made 4 distrubing to me. Not Dead Space distrubing of coarse but you get the idea.

Go to Gamersgate.com and check out 'Downfall'

Go to GOG.com and check out 'Sanitarium' and perhaps even the 'Gabriel Knight' trilogy. Also possibly 'Phantasmagoria' but only the first one!

Also on steam the 'Penumbra' games. People have probably already mentioned this one. I know people have mentioned 'Amnesia already.

If you can somehow get a hold of it, try 'I have no mouth and I must scream'.

(Edit) Oh I see you already had Penumbra in your initial list.

You might also want to try 'Daemonica' avaliable at Gamersgate.

You've covered just about all of them.

If you're REALLY into that and have a PS3, check out Heavy Rain. Its slow to start, but the story gets incredibly dark and hard to deal with at points from an emotional standpoint, at least in comparison to other games. On point in particular forces you to commit a slight act of violence that would seem atomically small compared to the limb exploding in other titles, but ends up feeling gorier and harder to watch and deal with then any mutilations of the Dead Space games.

Other then that, everyone else has covered all the great stuff you can find on PC. I just figured since you mentioned owning Demon's Souls, you could have an interest for a dark but great PS3 title.

OOH!

Manhunt! Manhunt all the way! Incredible game, still holds up alright (not during gunfights though), and the story is dark and twisted without going too far or seeming excessive. Its a big survival against horrible people who want you dead, and you're forced to do terrible things as a result. Its basically a Serial Killer Simulator.

I also supposed the Uncharted titles can be seen as dark when you consider Nathan Drake is a sociopath who cracks wise in between genocidal rampages against obviously untrained and poor combatants of other races and ethnicities.

But yeah, get Manhunt if it hasn't been suggested (and I haven't seen it). Its fun, dark, twisted, but also compelling and brutal and visceral and all those words from the Gamespot review generator.

Check my review on my page, I gave it a 9, which means I liked it much more than Amnesia, Silent Hill 2 and many other horror games out there. Did I also mention the amazing soundtrack and presentation, and the fact that it's the first comercially avaiable game made in Argentina?

I forgot to mention that Still Life is actually a sequel to a game called Post Mortem, I haven't played it but I heard it's absolutely twisted.

Well once you covered the action, it's time to look back into the old puzzle games. ..Also, don't bother with The Path..

I'll vouch for Harvester and against it, it's a sick game with a twisted story. It sicker than manhunt in terms of violence although the presentation of said violence is limited-old game etc.Others are;

Darkness Within 1, puzzle horror game, story based on Lovecrafitan mythos

Darkness Within 2, a fps puzzle horror game without shooting

Tribly Series, a solid horror puzzle game, free and indie. I recommend this above this elses.

Shadow of the comet: old puzzle game based on Lovecraft.

Sicker than Manhunt? Nope, at least Harvester haves some (DARK) humor spliced in the story, Manhunt and Manhunt 2 are absolutely mean spirited and the fact that Manhunt 1 is basically about killing people on camera to please a sick and sleazy guy is just unpleasant.

As you feel. I felt otherwise, killing for some other's amusement isn't anything new to me. But there's things in Harvester that quite mind-**** me. I played both Manhunt chuckling sometimes at the over-the-top kills ala Mortal Kombat- got desensitized. Harvester didn't pull that old trick -even for an old game, it pulled off pyschological things. That pushed some of my buttons and what's made it imo, very uniquely sick.
