I'm an architecture/design student so need a new rig with similar requirements of gamers (I'll be playing games also). A computer with fast graphics capabilities would make my life much better, and if I could (i've lived without since my laptop sucks) It'd be great to have 2 monitors and be able to use a couple programs at once. My main priority is the videocard/s and ddr3, I don't care about other features so long as the system runs smoothly. (although any advice on a case/way to lock it would be useful as it will be in a studio). I've been reading alot of the threads for advice on new systems... I am OPEN to BUILDING (i made one years ago), but I don't have time to reasearch all the ins and outs of what is compatable and what will perform better so either an advice shopping list, or a prebuild system is what I need (I've been looking at ibuypower and ava direct as they seem the most affordable, but im wary of reliability). Graphic performance is my priority, but I am a student so value and reasonable $ is also key. I don't care if its teribly ugly I'd rather save money. I don't know enough about what to put the money into to get the most for it, but it'd be ideal if you can suggest where I can skimp and get cheapers parts, but then put more money towards the graphics card for example (clearly they have to support each other). One random prebuild I've been looking at is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227274&cm_re=83-227-_-83-227-274-_-Product I'd love to be able to room for getting a second graphics card later on (maybe) and RAM expansion later, Im open to advice on how many gb and speeds ect. Is avadirect and or ibuypower trustworhty or do they use generic parts thats gonna crap out Ive been looking at the $700 range for a budget, however if I'm going to gain a huge amount of performance and years out of the sytem by going up to $900 that is possible, or if I will only loose a little by going down in price thats good

I'ld advise on using the uni computers for CAD work, CAD is extremely heavy on system resources and it will destroy most people's budgets. Also you may not be able to get the software through uni and so you'ld need to pay full price, Autocad costs about $4000 and the civil engineering version about $7000.

okay how much are you willing to spend.

keep in mind that your want for a secure computer will probably cost you $8 all by itself. as locking cases dont exist anymore but you can get hard drives that are removeable via keys which imo is just amazing :P

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817119503. when your done at work remove the hard drive.. take it home with you and keep it safe.. make good.

i went with an intel cpu as they far exceed amd cpu's for video editing and would be benefitial in a 3d rendering environment though you are welcome to go amd if you feel the additional cores are of benefit to you i will find an amd alternative for you. this system isnt the best at 3d rendering but considering your budget you wont get alot better. total after everything before any code s of S&H:

$750 give room for the codes your looking at 700-715 bucks before S&H and the MIR's (assuming they all go through) would compensate for almost all of the shipping & handling you pay. and on top of all of that you get a free $60 game its a solid buy for what your after. and all you would need to get is another 465 and a better power supply in order to go sli.

Thanks! As i'm shopping this will help, maybe i'll even end up doing it, i'm going to run my numbers and see if I can incresae my budget in the next few days. One specific question...the MOBO says it compatible with i5 and i7 but doesnt list i3. I guess I don't know much about the processors, you mentioned the intel is good, so what would have more cores do for me instead? Also you said this isn't the best system (obviously since Im on a budget), but will i suffer for limiting myself to this budget? How much would I have to spend to have a system thats not overkill and pricy...but very robust and will feel the power. I guess where would you balance performace and money, and maybe some example that would really get the job done.

If you can afford it you want to try and aim for something like this:

i7 920 CPU

6GB's RAM (the programs your using will use triple channels extra bendwidth)

GTX460 (CUDA boost FTW!)

CAD honestly isn't that demanding - you can run it on integrated. Its rendering and animation that is the real problem.

I'm not talking graphics i mean CPU and RAM, GPU acceleration seem to be appearing but not on everything. Still it's useful to have a proper card so that the CPU dosn't have to deal with graphics.

So my Budget increased to $1000 with a cutoff of $1500 and I tried to come up with my own build and put a post out. What would you suggest at this money level.
