I have a budget of roughly 2,000 CDN to work with at the moment. This build will most likely be used to edit, design and game on. I need something that has a lot of power, the most juice I can get out of 2000. I will be working with programs such as photoshop, sony vegas (video editing) etc. So if I could get any help at all, it would be greatly appreciated. I am quite novice at this, so take it easy on me :|

Are you planning to make anything that would be put on a BluRay disk? if so, you'll need to figure at least one bluray burner into the mix, or two. That in itself could cut fairly deep into the budget, though... not to mention with BD recordable discs still going for $20USD per. :( I don't know how much different the CDN prices are to most US-based shops, but I would seriously recommend trying to even get a low-end i7 CPU to help with the hard work of crunching through and encoding HD video if that's what you intend on doing. Even the base i7 920 should be more than enough for any game on the market, and keep up for quite a while. The tricky part will be figuring in the cost of the motherboard and RAM, as good i7 supporting boards are still pricey. I know there is the i5 apparently now, but for the work you're talking about doing, the extra leverage of hyperthreading that the i7 has over the i5 (and on a good architecture this time) may very well make the difference in reducing your waiting time on all that editing and encoding.

No nothing to blu ray. I was looking at an i7 core initially, I figured it would last me a good while. Just how pricey are we talking with the RAM and mobo?

The ideal would be an x58 chipset board (which can run ~$300USD here for an SLI-certified one), and three (or six) sticks of DDR3 RAM (which in itself is still not yet to the price levels of DDR2, especially for anything worth its PCB ). That too could run close to a quarter of your budget right there. Couple that with SLi (or CrossFire) and a strong enough power supply, and that would easily occupy half the budget. You could give Newegg.ca a try. A look-see over there, and at least the basic components aren't as bad as where I thought they would have been. i7 920MSI x58 Platinum SLiOCZ Obsidian 3x2GB DDR3-1600 RAM As of this writing, those pieces go for $694 before any rebates. At least it's not as bad as $1000 before shipping, right? :p

i7 would be better because the programs he will be using will probably use hyper threading.

Well, the thing is.. I have a tiger direct retail store not far away from my house. I've been there once or twice and they said if you don't see something in the store, they can order it for you, free and all. I mean, I would ideally go there.. But yeah. Thanks for the help dude. I may just hop over to the store and self and tell them some of these things and my opinions as well..

There's also x3440 and x3450 which are based on LGA 1156. I'm not sure if they are available in Canada atm.

Since you live near a store I know can't compete with the i7 but a hell of a lot cheaper

there you go buddy

for a total of 1576 $before taxes

this is if you're more into nvidia. If you prefer ATI I'll say something like that: keep all the pieces in the built I just made and replace the ram, mobo and GPU for those:

MOBO + RAM + CPU bundle : http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4488089&sku=B69-2100-939$

GPU : http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4938846&sku=A271-4893-225$

for a total of 1590 before taxes...12gb of ram is too much IMO but it comes in the bundle
